Also... he was also previously in The Low Anthem? I had no idea that all of these bands were connected. This booking makes so much sense, and his newest album has made for great background music at work today.
He also was playing in Langhorne Slim's band while they were on tour together last year. They're good friends
And Buck Meek, the guitarist for Big Thief, played in his band at their New York show.
Yea, he gives a lot of credit and thanks to Langhorne for having him on so many shows lately. I believe he appears (or is at least thanked) on Langhorne's newest record and I think he appeared with him on Conan for a performance.
He's a talented dude. When I bought a record from him (when Twain and Spirit Family Reunion opened for Felice Brothers recently) I didn't have cash on me and he didn't take cards. I said I'd run across the street to an ATM and he just had me paypal him the money instead. Good show, too. Excited to see him at NFF.

Yeah he was great opening for Langhorne. Seems like his live setup changes around depending on who's available but when I saw him it was very spacey and psych-folky. I dug it.
He also seems like a really sweet guy which makes it even easier to be fan

What are the chances they'll be at NFF? Has this been discussed? They'll be in my city in June. Trying to decide if I should buy tickets.
I haven't checked their schedule so not sure how likely that is. They've been at Newport Folk Fest the last three years. That could mean they're overdue a break year from Newport though. On the other hand they have a new album plus they love Newport and Newport loves them. At this point I'd almost put them in the inner circle of Newport Folk family regulars which includes the likes of Jim James and Lucius. We'll see.
These two at Love Rocks last night. This would be a nice combo at Newport.
I dared dream something like that too when I saw that video of Mick and Keith with Buddy and Gary Clark Jr at that White House gig. I think War and Treaty are Sunday too which is pointing to some big blues Jam finale if I have Gary Clark's date right. But I don't want to fall into the compounding expectation trap. Thinking of Dylan in 2015 style rumors. Right now I'm just really hoping for Buddy Guy. That would be epic by itself with Gary Clark Jr and possibly the War and Treaty singer. Whether other singers Buddy influenced decide to be there is their call. Atlantic crossings are big ask even for Newport but who knows. The Stones European tour ends in early July so it's not impossible.
Damn... would it have been amazing if Newport could have grabbed Animal Collective on their Sung Tongs tour.
Dates of the tour seemingly lined up, but it looks like they’ll be out west during the Newport Folk weekend. Still a long shot though (they have the 28th off, but the 27th is in Chicago and the 29th is in Seattle). (I remember Newport responding to a tweet of mine stating they tried to book Neutral Milk Hotel during their reunion tour, so I have faith that NFF might go for something like this on occasion).

Interesting thought. They definitely wouldn't be an artist I'd peg for a Newport set, but I think I'd be down

I’m not sure they’d be a good fit during a regular tour, but Sung Tongs might be a prime example of freakfolk. Their later stuff might not be as NFF appropriate (a little heavier on the electronic instruments).
Which actually brings up an interesting thought; freakfolk is a sub genre of folk that NFF has largely not explored.
