I know we keep coming back to overall opinion of the lineup. One way I evaluate the lineup is by asking the following question: “is this the best folk-oriented lineup in the country/world?” Most years, it’s a resounding yes. And in some years, it’s one of the best festival lineups overall (not just folk-oriented).
This year it’s going to be tough to convince me.
Even this Outlaw Music Tour put on by Willie and Sturgill may be a more exciting day of music than any of the days of NFF (or at least, very comparable).
That’s not to say I think the lineup is bad. Far from it. Just that I have very high expectations (that are usually delivered on, but it’s okay if there’s a year where they are not met).
(Posted today because more dates were added to the Outlaw tour which brought it to my attention. Damn... that Charlotte date).
Pickathon is the one giving Newport a run for its money this year for my taste. Love the vibe they curate, plus the venue looks sweet. Definitely gonna have to make my way out there one of these years
Agree that Pickathon's lineup is awesome, but Newport is already giving more at the "top" of the lineup than Pickathon is giving, and that's without the usual end of the roll out headliners. I think this lineup in the end will do a great job of mixing some of the more fresh folk-oriented musicians that you see at Pickathon (already 7 crossovers), some of the more heavy hitters that you might find at Outlaw Music (Sturgill, Brandi Carlile, Isbell, maybe others), and some unique to Newport sets that will make it the best folk-oriented lineup in the country/world.

Oh yeah most of the best stuff at Pickathon is already on the Newport lineup. I'm just really hoping Phosphorescent is added to that list. And has new music soon. I miss him.
For me, Forecastle has the best folk-ish lineup this year. Even after you remove the T Pains and Vic Mensas from the list.
Chris Stapleton Arcade Fire (ish, could work at NFF) Modest Mouse (ish, could work at NFF) Jason Isbell Houndmouth War on Drugs Father John Misty Vance Joy Courtney Barnett Trampled by Turtles Kurt Vile Jenny Lewis Margo Price Punch Brothers Rainbow Kitten Surprise Lucero I’m With Her Hiss Golden Messenger
For one, I’m really surprised and a little sad/mad that there’s such little overlap between the two to this point (3?)
But, I do agree there’s not much rare or surprising about that lineup. At best, you’ll get to see Courtney and Kurt team up during one of their sets for a few songs (which would be awesome). Or potentially Kurt jamming with War on Drugs.

Also very good!
I'm still confident on FJM and Margo making the cut. Arcade Fire, TWOD, Kurt Vile, or Jenny Lewis would make me pretty happy
Not much else there I'd really care too much about. Punch Bros. and I'm With Her played last year. Houndmouth should have broken up. Vance Joy, RKS, and Lucero aren't really my cup of tea, and I don't know if I need another Trampled by Turtles set.
Finally, an under the radar band I know. Caught Lowcut Connie last year at Lincoln Center Out of Doors (opening for the Jayhawks, who bored me to death live). They stole the show with their infectious energy. Not sure the last time Newport had a performer stand on the piano and pound the 16th notes before jumping into the audience. I'm reminded of a Philly low rent version of Scissor Sisters and Jerry Lee Lewis. There's a little of the Oh Hello's thrown in, though perhaps bit more obviously calculated.
Funny...last night I was thinking of bands that don't necessarily fit the mold that invariably pop up, ala Trombone Shorty or Reinwolf, who are still available and would be a trip to see. Bands like the B52's. Barenaked Ladies. I'd call Lowcut Connie is a low rent version I think will win over the crowd, probably mid afternoon at the Quad.

If you compare them in any way to The Oh Hellos then I'm sold. I love stomp folk.
I think these guys will open the Quad like the Seratones did last year
They seem a little too big for that compared to other acts on Saturday.
This seems like it'll be a fun set though, and I'm definitely worried about conflicts in the first half of that day.
Low Cut Connie, Hiss, Tank, Bedouine, Daniel Norgren, and Curtis Harding are all ones I really want to see, but I'm guessing I'll have to pass on one or two of those.

Really?
Aren't they like the last act on the Roo poster and medium line at Pilgrimage? I just assumed they were not popular since they just played a 150 seat venue in baltimore.

They played a 1,000-person spot in NYC, which is really all I was going off of. So I don't really know. That's bigger than the places Norgren, Harding, or Caamp would play here, and they all seem like other potential early Quad acts.

In terms of energy and stage antics. But no, this is rock 'n roll, more Jerry Lee Lewis than the Oh Hellos. Sorry for the confusion.
I love energy and stage antics. Doesn't matter what genre. The Oh Hellos, Avett Brothers, Jon Batiste, Edward Sharp and Father John Misty. I love how all those guys go the extra mile to entertain. I think these guys will get people on their feet.

These guys deliver on one of the genres I thought Newport was missing out on so far this year. Roadhouse Rock? Garage Folk? Not sure what to really call it. But happy to have it.
Listening to their album stuff, I’m not necessarily sold. I’d still take J Roddy Walston as a repeat over Low Cut Connie. But I expect that they’ll grow on me. I’m at least happy to get some folk bookings that will pull me out of the lawn chair. Outside of Gary Clark and Fantastic Negrito, I was just thinking about how Brandi Carlile might have been the most toe-tap inducing/rocking artist on the lineup.
Next up: danceable acts. (One of my most memorable musical experiences at Newport was dancing to Rod y Gab at the Quad; I’ve enjoyed grooving in previous years to Trampled by Turtles, Spirit Family Reunion, Old Crow, Lonesome Trio, the Oh Hellos, etc. But as of this moment, outside of maybe the superjam or stomping around to Caamp, there’s not much to really dance to on the lineup).

Call it rock & roll!
Isbell, Lone Bellow, Langhorne, Hamilton/Rostam, Wood Brothers, Nicole Atkins, Curtis Harding, and War and Treaty all put on pretty energetic rocking sets.
Some of those are pretty danceable too, and Hiss Golden Messenger also get into some pretty nice grooves, though maybe not as uptempo as the artists you mentioned.
You’ve pretty much nailed down my list of bands I must check out this year.
Although, I saw Hiss open up for Mumford and it was a bit snoozy. I’ll admit, it could have just been that they were playing a massive arena and most people in attendance could not have cared less about the opener.
Not sure what to expect from Hamilton and Rostam. Definitely my most anticipated set, but not expecting to dance (some of Rostam’s solo stuff could do the trick).
Langhorne usually fits in the stomp folk category, but I spent yesterday listening to the album he’s touring on, and the arrangements are more thought out.
And there’s an embarrassing video in existence of me dancing to Jason Isbell’s Codeine, so I can’t argue against him/that.
All these different tastes and perceptions are great. They should have a dialogue booth or something at Newport. How about an Inforoo Tent to share mixed tapes. So much I don't know -- which is how I've fallen for War and Treaty. Talking of dance...
I didn't know the Wood Brothers until they were announced either, and Lone Bellow always makes me want to kick off my shoes and dance on the grass on a hot summer day. Great for these old bones.
LLC is more like a sh*t-kicking bar band that's maybe a little politically incorrect, and makes you want to drink one too many, turn to your closest neighbor, and dance on a table. They even bring their own piano so they don't wreck the venue's. It's all good.
