Some good new folk out in the stores (and on Spotify) today (some of it from earlier in the week).
I know I’ve been advocating for more upbeat/danceable artists, but Lisa Hannigan has an album (maybe an EP?) out today in which she’s backed by a chamber pop orchestra and NFF has my permission to bring the whole thing to the fort.
Band of Horses song/single
Willie Nelson song
Shakey Graves song
Hop Along album
Something new (an album?) from Son Volt
Sarah Shook and the Disarmers album
Rainbow Kitten Surprise album
Wallows has an EP (they aren’t quite folk, but not too far off from what we have seen on the lineup in previous years)
An Elton John cover/tribute album featuring some of the folk including Florence, Mumford, Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, etc
And a Johnny Cash tribute/cover album featuring some of the folk including Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, I’m With Her, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, etc
Despite it all, the conflicts are going to suck yet again, aren't they? He's a few more examples why.
Tanks and the bangas. Their music isn't just beautiful, it's thought proving and poetic. It's positive. It's inspiring. Can't wait. Here's a great example.
Darlingside. Beautiful lyrics, artistic music videos and melodic harmonized music. Plenty of great songs.
Fantastic Nerito. 2017 Best Contemporary Blues Grammy winner. Fascinating back story. Kick ass in your face songs. I'm expecting an electric performance.
Sidi Toure. Mali. Poor in money. Rich is music. Fell in love with their music after sponsoring a child there years ago.
Moses Sumney. Had a stressful week? Tell Alexa to play ocean sounds then play this song on another device. You're welcome.
Am I the only one who can’t get into Tank and the Bangas no matter how hard I try? All I hear is beat-poetry with backing instruments.
I get the inclusion in the lineup. And I am happy to give them credit for doing something original. But might be one of the few acts, if not the only act, I consistently skip over when listening to Newport playlists.

I don't always skip over them as there are some gems that are the more "traditional" concept of a song that I like (e.g. Quick, Oh Heart, Eggs over Easy), but then the other half is definitely beat poetry which just lulls me to sleep.
Saw a YouTube ad for this folk band. I wasn't familiar with Field Medic. They seem right up Newport's alley. Can see them playing Newport at some point if they haven't already. Looks like they've been opening for The National.
Glen Hansard is playing the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on July 27th. Think he'll be added Saturday or Sunday? A buddy of mine saw him at the Anthem back in March and said he and his band killed it.

anyone think we could see strand of oaks back this year? i missed his newport set in 2015 to get a good spot for waters (the right decision looking back in it) and have seen him 3-4 times since then but he would be a great quad closer

I saw all of SOA and still got on the rail for Waters.

I've heard rumors that Tim's in the studio right now with all of My Morning Jacket sans Jim James and that they're planning on touring together this year, so it's definitely a possibility that they're on the road come NFF time.

Jenny Lewis playing NJ on the 27th then Charlottesville on the 31st
Not helping me manage my expectations!
My hopes have been way too high since the War on Drugs tour schedule lined up. And shortly after (early on in the announcement season), Lord Huron’s and Bermuda Triangle’s did as well. Now Jenny Lewis? With my luck, none of the four will make it on; there are getting to be more folk acts that I want to see touring through the area than there are spots left on the schedule. (Especially if you add in Bon Iver, Florence, and Kurt Vile).
Has Okkervil River ever played this fest? If not, any idea why not?
Does a June Boston date rule a band like this out? Their new songs have been awesome. And I would jam out to Lost Coastlines on an actual coastline so hard. Would also help me check off my “more indie bands” request.

I've never listened to Promise of the Real but this might be the most exciting announcement yet just because of the connections they have alone... Now hopefully we get one of either Willie, Neil, or Fogerty (Who was just mentioned as being in the area on Sunday I think?)
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Lukas is great but he's playing plenty of other places without Neil.
Indeed, but there is no doubt this increases the odds. They are playing various fests this Summer and Fall with no tour dates for now, no reason Newport couldn't be on that list

I think that comment from Jay should pretty much rule out Neil unless something changes before the fest. Maybe our best hope is to have Lukas play this year and help convince Neil to play 2019

Yes. He announced a show in SPAC billed as “evening with” and it’s the only show in that stretch. I’m confident about it.
