Personally, I think this lineup is absolutely awesome!
The majority of my favorite memories are of seeing acts lower on the bill that just killed it... Julien Baker, Radical Face, Matt the Electrician, etc.
I really think this year has a ton of underrated acts on the lineup (even hearing multiple people mention no familiarity with The Wood Brothers surprised me) and come August we'll have this thread flooded with OMG so and so laid it all out and blew me away. (If anything, I'm less interested in some of the acts that seem beloved on this board... *cough* *cough* Courtney Barnett)
I'll grant that there hasn't been an announcement yet this year that made me think oh god oh god yes (Waters, Fleet Foxes, etc.) but I have a feeling there's one or two of those to come. Though even if none of the remaining announcements are of that "holy cow" variety, it's all going to leave my mind as soon as we raise our hands in the air and start going through the chutes Friday morning.

This could also be a logical Mumford year, where they'd be a little cheaper cause they're not up to much (outside of a few shows and probably in the studio).

That’d be fantastic! I’d be leading the excitement on that one lol.

I'm staying positive too. All of my favorite memories are in the harbor tent--Lucius bringing out Mavis, Tall Tall Trees, Lady Lamb, Billy Bragg, Chance McCoy and JP Harris, Christoper Paul Stelling proposing to his girlfriend...I'm confident that Fantastic Negrito, Pheobe Bridgers, Colter Wall or someone I've paid no attention to so far is going to provide that feeling which is worth the price of Admission for me.
It's funny how much of the "bigness" is based on timing of announcements too. Fleet Foxes were amazing last year but the hype ultimately came from the fact that Newport got to be their first announced show after a long hiatus. It's almost like everyone has forgotten that they played a ton of festivals last year (and are playing a bunch more this year.)
I'll admit that this rollout has been...odd. It was initially exciting to see an artist a day, but now I'm realizing that with so many names so fast I've done a worse job of listening to individual new artists. I suppose that's partially because I'm already familiar with a big part of the lineup. I can't imagine they got an ok to play past sundown but I still feel like maybe they're extending somehow. Without Chris Funk maybe they're retiring For Pete's Sake and the museum is just a regular stage now?
Finally I'll beat this drum until announcements are over--in 2016 the last five announcements were Graham Nash, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Alabama Shakes and Patti Smith. It's not too late for big names.
cheer up guys, its a festival! in the interest of keeping things positive, i wanted to put together a bunch of songs i've been listening to based solely on digging deeper into lineup announcements i was less familiar with. everyone's taste is different but there's so much good stuff to discover out there.

I've been a pretty big detractor of the Saturday schedule. OK with Sunday. But only five announcements left...or are we all wrong about that?
Still concerned about NFF becoming a boutique festival. Many of the acts we may know (i.e. Passenger), but not big draws against some of the newer or spruced up fests. Legendary can become cliche in a blink. It's happened before. I also don't get why we ignore the icons. I only use this as an example -- I wouldn't drive across several states lines just to see Arlo -- but he's available, in the area, and claims he doesn't get asked.
BIG BUT -- Some of the smaller acts may play a shorter set, and we get a short surprise (ala James Taylor). Who is playing the Secret Mountain set? Who are Jon Batiste's "special guests" ? That guy is highly respected and knows a lot of folks. I also think Jay may be up to something. Back when Squarespace was Paste Mag Ruins, many bands played acoustic sets there, including, Dawes and Of Monsters and Men (would drive across several state lines to see them). It doesn't seem like the budget has exactly been blown out of the water. And I know I am going to fall hard for some band I currently think is a blasé booking. Not complaining. I'm a consumer. Ultimately Sunday night I will know whether I still want to consume at these prices. I'm betting that I will.

That's the one thing that keeps coming to mind for me and makes me think we've got a big surprise or two in store. As much as I love the majority of this lineup, I don't see where the major expenses are (though I'm no expert and even the big ticket acts take a major pay cut compared to other fests).

Have none of you ever heard Jay say multiple times that they have a tiny budget, and that most bands play for about a tenth of what they usually get at other fests? This is not an issue of not spending the damn budget.

People are allowed to be disappointed. I’m not disappointed in the quality but rather the exclusivity. The crossover with WXPN and the repetition of the “folk fam” disappoints me. You don’t have to agree.

It's likely everybody here is taking a pay cut.
As I said the I understand the bigger acts still take a significant paycut for Newport, I imagine there is some disparity between the Newport headliners and the other acts.
Another way of looking at it is that in years past you could look at the lineup and most days you could fairly confidently pick who the headliner was (there are exceptions such as FotC) and at this point I'm just not seeing any standouts from the pack.

I still think you’ll get these three headliners. Sturgill is that way on Friday. Saturday’s and Sunday’s headliners are likely still to come. So I am not worried. As many have been saying, hold out for the last few announcements.
Where I am worried, is that we usually have 2-3 acts each day that we debate whether they are headliners when they’re first announced, only for a bigger act to get announced and supersede them.
Unless scheduling changes, on Saturday after the headliner, the next two biggest acts are probably Jenny Lewis and Cheech and Chong. Jenny Lewis was third (from the end of day) last time she played Newport, and I don’t think she got any bigger in the interim. To move her into the sub seems meh. And we’ve previously expressed concerns re: C&C.
What I feel as if we are missing are the clearly subheadliner acts, like the Lumineers, Avett Bros, Nickel Creek, MMJ, Band of Horses, Feist, Ryan Adams with the Stringdusters, Sufjan, Hozier, etc. Newport has really stood out in previous years in this regards. Normally I would expect they’re still to come, but we only have 1 announcement left for Sat. (Maybe at best, we get St Vincent acoustic on Friday in this role.)

Ryan Adams with the Stringdusters
Still crazytown to me that this was not a headlining set. One of my favorite Newport sets ever.

HMMMM earlier today I said I was staying positive (and I am!) but this is the best articulation I've heard of the threads general malaise this year. The sub headliner point is a fair one.
I'm on the west coast now and I've been batting the idea of going to Sasquatch around. Their subs are David Byrne, Spoon and Ray Lamontagne. Since Newport had Lamontagne in the very same slot a few years back that seems like a fair comparison.
I guess as it stands sub headliners are currently Isbell for Friday and Gary Clark or possibly Brandi Carlile for Sunday, all of which seem acceptable to me. But when you put it like that it does seem like Saturday in particular is missing something. I'm a huge Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis fan but I admit the bands you named are a tad above her level. I guess Courtney Barnett is the current subheadliner there? Cheech and Chong sounds fun but count me among the disappointed if they turn out to be that high on the schedule.
Still...when they announce Bon Iver doing For Emma, Forever Ago in it's entirety like someone suggested a while back we're all gonna lose it.

This needs the RSD vinyl treatment.
Or if Newport wants to book the Ryan Adams’ Exile on Main St gig upcoming during NOLA Jazz Fest, I’d be all in.
I’m sure you would like the hard copy but the audio is available if you don’t have it, it keeps me from setting the building on fire at work regularly.
Ok, off-topic and late, but who is Curtis Rogers? Some light googling has turned up a guy with a blog making a recreation of one of his resonators, but I haven't found any music, bios, anything! I imagine if he's good enough to warrant a tribute set from Nels Cline, he had to have been pretty legit.

Jay: Hey Nels, we’d love to bring you back to the Fort this summer. What’s it going to take?
Nels: Well I won’t be on tour at that time. It may be pretty expensive for me to rig up all of my equipment and drive it to Newport.
Jay: Hmm. I have an idea. Pick your favorite guitar and we’ll pay for your flight to Newport. You can bring it as a carry-on, just don’t fly United. You can run a tip jar during your set and keep the proceeds.
Nels: Count me in! *thinking to self- “and this is why I can’t afford my own flat in New York”

One of the real prizes in Cline’s New York collection—and the guitar whose purchase earlier this year he described as a sign of illness—is a weathered 1937 National Duolian that was previously owned, and decorated in striking fashion, by Curtis Rogers, a Tennessee traveling musician. Rogers painted his name on the fingerboard and added rhinestone inlays that continue up to the headstock. He also painted the face of a woman on the body underneath the strings. When TR Crandall Guitars in New York acquired the instrument a few years ago, its fretboard was so worn that it had to be replaced, and Rogers’ designs were painstakingly replicated for the new one.

I feel like 2016 and 2017 had great lineups but were a little lacking in bands on the verge. 2015 was great like that.
I think 2018 has a bunch of artists that have great potential and I am loving getting into them. Performers like Phobe Bridgers, Curtis Harding, Darlingside, Moses Sumney, Fantastic Negrito, Weather Station, Tank And the bangas etc. Nows your chance to discover them if you haven't. Listening to the artists and finding new songs you like makes the weekend awesome.
As for mid to high there are several. Gary Clark, Isbell, Passenger plus several artists from bigger bands that are in side or other projects like Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive, Rostam of Vampire Weekend etc.
The lineup has become only part of the festival. It's been evolving the last few years into this weekend mystery tour. Secret sets, surprise collaborations and special tribute sets and nods to legends past that don't reflect on lineups. This things sells out in a flash for a reason guys. I personally have several good friends in the waiting list right now happy to get your tickets. Maybe this year just doesn't suit your tastes. Try again next year. I don't recall Roger Waters, Nathaniel Rateliff or Justin Vernon being on the lineup last year. I'm not a fan of the new way they list the lineup though.
