I still see Bruce as greedy and all about the money...
You may have more of a backstory for this claim than I do for a counter argument, but Bruce has played intimate shows in Pittsburgh with his pal Joe Grushecky in recent years. He’s always praised the atmosphere of being able to roll up into a smaller venue without the set up usually needed for the E Street Band.
I still see Bruce as greedy and all about the money...
I think that's a signature of his traveling band. But like Keith Richards, Bruce will show up unannounced at the smallest shows if it is to play with someone or for something he cares about. But I have never considered Bruce, Paul Simon, CSNY reunions, or Robert Plant as anything other than just fun to talk about here. It wouldn't be a wow moment for me. It would be "clear!"
Love to be contrarian, but Glen Hansard just played two year ago and would rather see a fresh face. Loved his movie and the Broadway show...like the Frames...But never a big fan of his singing. Then saw his show at the Fort two years ago and it literally blew me away, Great performer. So I'm good.
BTW -- Saw a 2012 schedule and a reminder that they had unplugged sets in what I guess is still Square Space, and seven acts on Sunday (two short morning acts). They also used to announce their "wandering minstrels" and gate performers. And at times had some announced familiar acts in the Museum, so again, not so sure we only have 4 acts left to announce. Or not announce.
I always dig Sprained Ankle and Funeral Pyre but I've also never quite understood the hype and couldn't get into her new album even a little bit
I still listen to the recording of her at Newport fairly often. That set was by far one of my favorite moments at the set. She absolutely gave it all. Could barely muster enough composure to get out a thank you at the end before running off of the stage to collect herself.
That said, I can certainly understand why her new album doesn’t appeal to most.
I was in tears and blown away by how gorgeous she sounded and how quiet the quad was during that set. Then my wife came up behind me and yelled "WHATS THIS BORING MOM MUSIC I'M GONNA GO SOMEWHERE ELSE." So to each their own.
She's best for when you need a good cry that's for sure. I like "Everybody Does" "Something" and "Rejoice" from the first album and "Appointments" "Turn Out the Lights" and "Hurt Less" from the second.

I don’t think you’re contrarian. A lot of the concerns and points brought up yesterday are still valid after the Glen Hansard announcement. I think we can separate the repeat acts out even further to artists on the rise or in their prime to artists on the decline. Courtney would be in the first category. I would argue, somehow, even this far down the road, Brandi is still in her prime. These bookings make sense. Glen Hansard and Nicole Atkins, seem removed from their prime. Glen has a new album but I haven’t seen anyone or anywhere talking about it.
Booking artists on the decline, in my opinion, is what led to decades of failed corporate sponsorships for Newport. Booking artists on the rise is how Jay was able to turn the fest around. This becomes even more of an important distinction as the festival finds its niche and repeat acts become ever more common.

There are definitely a solid chunk of artists this year whose trajectory appears to have at least flat-lined. As good as they are, Glen, Nicole, The Lone Bellow, Langhorne, Wood Bros, etc. just don't seem likely to reach any sort of new career heights. Brandi used to be like that but this new album seems to have revitalized things for her.
That's probably the best criticism I've seen of this lineup, though. Having a couple names like that is fine, but things definitely a little stagnant this year. A lot of those artists make really great music and put on great shows, but in terms of continuing to expand on what Newport can be I don't think this lineup does a great job. Most promising bookings imo are Courtney, Moses Sumney, and Khruangbin.
I'm still waiting for hip-hop and R&B to start making more in-roads. Give me Chance, Janelle, Solange, Paak, D'Angelo, Lauryn, Kelela. (I'm sure money is something of an issue here). Same goes for stuff in the various rock circles. i'd love to see a place carved out for great songwriters like Mitski or Car Seat Headrest or Alex Cameron. Let's get King Gizz to come play Paper Mâché Dream Balloon in full. Let's pay tribute to some more recent artists. Nirvana's Unplugged album turns 25 next year, how about getting some people together to perform that?
What I'm trying to say is: I just want to know who these fucking headliners are.
Glen Hansard is so freaking good live I for one, really don't give a crap what any trend is. Among the circle of friends I know who attend concerts regularly there is huge respect for Glen and excitement when he comes around. He delivered a set for the ages the last time he played Newport and I expect something else special this time. Some artists without a recent hit album I totally agree could be skipped but with artists like Glen or The Oh Hellos for example you get much much more from them. He's reinvented himself several times in his career and will continue to. He's also a great guy and loved by fans and other musicians alike. He does a lot in Ireland for good causes. For example he and Hozier took part in an act of civil disobedience not too long ago there risking arrest by occupying a government owned building to bring attention to the homeless.
Sunday headliner? Fits with the vibe of the main stage that day. I’d put BHIC as a headliner for sure; not as sure about this project. In fact, I had no idea they were still touring on it. (And I’ve historically been a pretty big BH fan.)
Edit: Nvm, I see that he’s booked for Sunday in Detroit

Be careful what you wish for because they're also all friends with Jack Johnson. Not that I wouldn't love a Jack Johnson set (but I know his music is very polarizing).

ben harper is a bit of a head scratcher for me. sure i liked him when i was a kid but i havent kept up with anything in last decade or so. plus knowing we have fewer and fewer announcements, this one's a bit of a dud for me. staying postive though.
Enjoying this so far, but most of the songs all seem to sound very similar and blend together. Will report back after a full listen.
I think I liked the 2nd half of the album more than the first, even though the singles are all great and all seem to fall in the first half, with Mansion Door as probably my favorite song.
Really hoping he gets to play the Fort stage. I think it's likely, given his rise through Newport. This should be a great set.

Ben and Charlie just put out a new album together on 3/30, so their recent touring is in support of this new album as opposed to the 2013 album

I'm positive on this booking because it addresses some of the concerns I've mentioned earlier. For one, it isn't a repeat act. And Ben Harper is one of those long overdue bookings. It is also unique; even if they brought Ben Harper back next year, it would be an entirely different set as this one is going to be more blues than rock (thanks to Charlie). I've seen BH&IC a few times and BH&Relentless7 a few times, but I have yet to see Ben & Charlie. Although, I do completely understand the sentiment (I had mentioned the difference between booking bands on the rise/at their peak and bands on more of a linear trajectory; Ben falling into the latter).

Really enjoying the album. It's one of those things where if it was produced by a new act, not named Shakey Graves, I'd probably be all over it immediately. But given that it's hard to place Shakey Graves with the album (it's really his 5th album? damn), it took me an additional second to process before I decided that I really like it.
I could listen to "My Neighbor" on repeat for the next week and possibly would still want to hear more of it. Really love his take on the typical pop-folk noises: "la la la la la". It's sort of haunting
(Similar to my feelings on the new Lord Huron album, which I absolutely love. But it took me a little longer to process it after Strange Trails which didn't excite me as much as their debut and the new album)

For what it's worth, Grizzly Bear were booked to play this, but had to drop out.
I remembered this post and was envisioning how they would have fit into the schedule. Would have been an awesome act to have on this year's lineup. Khruangbin -> Grizzly Bear or Hamilton & Rostam -> Grizzly Bear... mmmm.

Yeah, personally I'd rather have 'The War on Drugs'. But I think it'll be fun none the less and be a big draw. I'm more about the music though.
Cheech & Chong Ben & Charlie works for me because I look at it and think "That's a cool booking that I'd happily check out," but I'd have no issue missing their set for someone else.
Soooooo Florence just announced a few more dates.....
Would that end the complaining? Probably.
Florence would be a phenomenal booking. Would definitely shut me up for a while
I also like the idea of a female rocker main stage on Saturday (if that is when they would book Florence): Phoebe Bridgers -> Jenny Lewis -> Courtney Barnett -> Florence and the Machine
