Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite on Colbert. Wow. This video has got me very very excited for that set. The Ben and Toots connection is interesting but Ben and Charlie will be in Detroit on Sundray so no collaboration there unless Toots are there Friday.
Musselwhite was reportedly the inspiration for the character played by Dan Aykroyd in the Blues Brothers. Harper was featured on the album True Love by Toots and the Maytals, which won the Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Reggae Album, and showcased many notable musicians including Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Trey Anastasio, Gwen Stefani / No Doubt, Bonnie Raitt, Manu Chao, The Roots, Ryan Adams, Keith Richards, Toots Hibbert, Paul Douglas, Jackie Jackson, Ken Boothe, and The Skatalites. On April 3, 2004, Harper and Jack Johnson performed with Toots and the Maytals on Saturday Night Live (season 29, episode 16), a show hosted by Donald Trump.
Holy fuck this thread has a lot of complaining, it's Newport, don't worry about lineups and enjoy the ride. It will be the best weekend of the year.
Why does this board mock people who say this about Bonnaroo (“who cares about the lineup I go to Bonnaroo for the vibes”) but it’s not okay to objectively look at the lineups of other festivals? It’s kinda bs, lineups DO matter.

Newport is different than just about any other festival in my mind. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think I've ever met someone who walked away on Sunday night with the thought that the lineup was too weak. So #1 rule remains in jay we trust.

Probably because the lineup is always great?
More than one person has commented that this year just feels weaker than others. That’s okay.
Maybe it's just me, but I've never been blown away by the lineup at Newport. I've always been blown away by the experience. The respectful nature of the crowd, the beautiful setting with all the boats, the ease in which you can jump between stages, the unique collaborative acts, the liveliness of the town after the fest, and so much more all come together to make make nff more than just it's lineup.
The lineup doesn't wow me, but I'm still confident it will be the best musical experience of the year for me.

If it’s not about the lineup, where was the support for the festival when it was floundering in the oughts?
The lineup absolutely blew me away ‘12 through ‘15. It came a little back down to earth in ‘16 and ‘17. ‘12’s lineup was enough to convince me to blindly commit to a trip in ‘13, and let me tell you, when the lineup was finally fully revealed I was not disappointed.
The lineup is what has caused CoS to bestow festival of the year to Newport in 2015. It’s fun being part of something that is exceptionally special like that. I still regret not attending that year.
With that said, if you live in the greater Newport area and can commute to the festival, the lineup is always worth the price (even in its off years). If you go to multiple festivals per year and this is just one in your annual portfolio, Newport always guarantees something special and unique. I get that.
But I can only afford myself one festival per year. This means I hope a lineup allows me to cross off as many must-see acts as possible. Coming from afar, attending requires factoring in the cost of transportation and lodging (and let me use this as an opportunity to thank QC for the hospitality in previous years; those were truly life changing/affirming moments and memories created with new friends). Thus considering the lineup on top of the experience becomes even more important. On top of that, Newport asks us to blindly commit to the festival causing additional investment that I would not have if I was able to make a fully informed purchase.
I’m not sure where this year’s lineup falls at this moment. It’s definitely bottom heavy, with many exciting smaller acts I expect to become big in the next few years. It’s a little strange how it seems to be missing a few big acts at the top, with such an odd distribution of big, headline caliber bands across days (they’re all on Friday).
Regardless of all that, it still is going to be an excellent time this summer and I am anxiously awaiting it!
Not an aftershow veteran. Who/what is DT and HGM? That Leon Bridges and Gary Clark, Jr. and others will play with Jon Batiste to help create Sunday's headline act has always been a given to me. So as a no show, after show guy, would Bridges playing with Batiste at an after show hurt or improve the chance of them pairing up at the Fort?

DT = Deer Tick. The curators of the infamous Newport Blues Cafe aftershows. Almost a guarantee in terms of Newport aftershows.
HGM = Hiss Golden Messenger.
Leon Bridges, is an interesting situation (I suspect). My guess, if he does pop up at Newport in some capacity but is not actually announced, it would be because he has a pretty big headlining gig in Boston in Oct. But if that was the case, Khruangbin is the opener at that show.
If he does get announced for an aftershow, unless it’s his own benefit show like FJM, I would think that would make him more likely to guest during festival sets as it guarantees that he’s in the area that weekend. But if the Instagram teaser video is any indication, he wouldn’t be playing an after show with Batiste, but with Deer Tick (initial poster mistook Bridges for Batiste; I never realized how similar they look in a fedora until now).

Gotcha. Thanks. I do know about the Deer Tick after shows. I def can see Leon joining Jon Batiste as an unannounced guest at the Fort, joining Gary Clark, Jr. It's just a pic on the instragram, but there's Kam Franklin of the Suffers who I still think could help memorialize Sharon Jones on a few numbers. And, yes, Jon and Leon look very much alike. And I like how they sound together.
Yuck. Was really hoping to go to a Deer Tick after party this year. I know it can be tough getting tickets but I usually invest the time and effort necessary to score tickets to events like this (log on early, use multiple browsers, refresh often). I have terrible luck so I now believe my chances to get to one of the after parties to be almost nill. This makes it a lot easier for casual fans to throw their hats in the ring to get a ticket.

It also grants someone who doesn't have the luxury of being on a phone/computer the second tickets go on sale to maybe get to have a special experience they might not otherwise ever be able to have.
I can at least understand why they'd want to do it in a way like this as the tickets are so limited, but selfishly I don't like it.
If they were doing it in a way like this I think it would be better to just queue everyone that signs up in a randomized order, then let them select the tickets they want (I'd probably limit it to only one or two nights allowed per person).
Also, I hate that you automatically have your credit card charged if randomly selected. On one hand, it cuts down on people requesting tickets when they do not have much interest in actually attending.
But I am trying for 4 tickets. Ideally I would also have my 3 friends try for tickets too, but if we are all randomly selected, we’d end up with 16 tickets and we would all get charged $220.
Similarly I only want to go one night but would like to have a chance at being selected for each of the nights (to increase my chance of being able to get in the door). If I happened to get selected for all three nights then I get charged over $600 for the four tickets I am requesting.
