A change of venue would be a bad idea. Their current one feels like home and very much sets the vibe for the entire festival. Any move would be a bad one imo.
They've proven that they can pull it off in multiple spaces. And since they intended to move it every year to transform something new, I don't think it really matters outside of a logistical perspective. Familiarity can (and did) lead to improvements at a specific venue or location. But there is adventure in trying something different and seeing what they can do to transform a new space. It opens up more possibilities. That's not to say that I don't dig Post-HTX and that the location isn't kind of perfect since it's so easy to get to. But I'm not going to be upset if it ends up somewhere else. I just need some fucking information so I can move forward with December plans. If it's going to be way up north or southwest or generally anywhere outside of the loop, we'd want to stay somewhere close. And I'd really like to pre-pay for all the tickets I need to buy and for lodging. Come on Omar. I know you read this shit. Give us something.
For a city fest of this sort I prefer having direct downtown access. There are many hotels in walking distance from the venue. I would also say they have gone through a transformation via visual arts each year. The possibilities are endless with that building. It's dark and perfect for all kinds of electronic music, while also providing plenty of cools spaces for art. I don't know why your plans aren't already set in stone. The festival is happening.

Plans are to go. I'm not wavering on that unless they switched it to a multiple venue festival. Otherwise, I don't disagree with you. I just see a move more as an adventure than a bad idea. I still have to get an Air B&B (and tickets, but I'm buying for 5). So I want to wait until they announce where it's going to be before shelling out a grand for lodging. I don't want to jump on some shit now and end up being a 40 or 50 minute drive away.
Edit - and I agree with postjack. We definitely need dates.

It’s been the third Saturday of December every year. I don’t think those of us with plans in place have really taken much of a chance. We accurately guess the Coachella dates in advance every year too. Unless there’s been some changes I’m unaware of, I think we can safely say Dec 15-16.

You're probably right. But they said the goal is to get it to a 5 day fest (earlier in this thread or the end of last year's). I don't think it happens in Year 4, but it's the goal. They've upped what they do on Fridays now, so if they added more to it and turned it into say a full day of music or stuck with a combination of panels/panelists and music and extend it to Thursday, it's something you have to look at. Do you come in Thursday? Friday? It might not matter for people with standing places to stay. But for those of us who have to make travel plans and want to be sure, some more concrete information is needed. I'm not asking for a lot. I know the lineup won't be out until September. But specific dates and a location would allow me to get all that shit out of the way.
I think they intended to move it every year until they found how awesome Post HTX. Yes, moving it would be a bad idea unless they're forced to then what choice do they have. In reality, that post office is a complete waste of space if it only holds a few events per year VS complete urban redevelopment.

I only go Sat-Sun. I don't know how long you guys stay, but I'd assume they'll still do the friday preparty (though if you're making the long haul it would make more sense to just spend an extra day in houston before the weekend anyways).
I honestly can't see them expanding. I think they have found their sweet spot right now. Just earlier we were debating that they can't even keep this thing afloat. I don't think the it's time for them to get to adventurous. The best fests usually stick to one location. I don't know if that has anything to do with their success or if it's just coincidental, but it's a reality none the less.
A stacked couple of days is all I really need anyways. It's also all I can really do with a busy December at home so it works out well for me.
I hear you. I went Friday night this year, but I ended up with a free ticket to that.
As for expanding, that's directly from Omar. He didn't say when though, just that it's the goal to build the festival into a 5-day event. He didn't elaborate on what that meant as far as music/art/panels. I'm fine with Friday/Saturday/Sunday but I want my options open in case they do decide to leverage the goodwill associated with the brand into something bigger this year. Luckily I don't have to deal with airlines since we're only about 4:45 outside of Houston. But a lot of people do. As Pablo or Jim Radish said the other day, this festival has a specific appeal to a traveling demographic. They need to get more people in the general area excited, but they've managed to get people like you (up in Dallas), us here in New Orleans and others from around the country and world interested. So I'm just looking to codify and pay for plans.

part of what i like about D4N is the two day format. similar to JJ December is a busy time for me, it's nice i'm able to fit in a festival 8 hours away with only two vacation days. not to mention the two day format (so far anyway) ensures the lineup is quality from gates to close. i would imagine expanding the festival to three or more non-preparty days could dilute the lineup.
i like that the preparty is there for people who want to do the extra day, but we typically arrive Friday around lunch time, and use that day and night to hang out with our Houston friends.

I love the 2 day format as well. I think with the booking they have and the endless, relatively unknown, talent there is around now that they could pull off a 4 day fest. Even the local acts they booked last year gave me so much faith in whatever team is booking this. Met Miguel Flaco at the Jamie XX show and he asked me and EAP to check out his show. I think he was the first one on Sunday, Beebee and I were the only jerks in the fest that early and we wandered over to is set and I was super impressed. That seemed to happen at every early set I went too.
Unrelated note, the Leader of the Semen Delegation requests Geto Boys. I'm also thinking Wu-Tang might be a thing with the 25th anniversary tour this year. Wouldn't be crazy about it, but it's almost always a good time.

I'd rather just have Scarface than Geto Boys, because I don't feel like getting stood up by Bushwick Bill again. I know way more of their music than any solo stuff he's done, though.
As far as Post HTX, I'm pretty sure they're only going to move it if they have to, so I don't know how it can be a "bad idea". It's not their idea.
And if they never moved it from Silver Studios, they never would have found Post HTX, so idk. I'm open to them doing whatever. I think the current venue is a good one for what they're doing. I don't think it's necessarily a great one.
This seems like a perfect time to break out a Mars Volta reunion. It is in Texas, after all. They got the Surfers to play a show two years ago so I don't think it's so farfetched, especially with Cedric already saying it was gonna happen at some point.

I don’t think we will see anything by them until well into next year at this point.
The title of this thread needs to be changed. I keep seeing "Day For Night" and "confirmed" out of the corner of my eye and get excited before remembering that its just blood and semen.

hard pass
you and i are likely the only people in this thread that wouldn't care for mars volta at day for night.
they are one of those bands that, on paper, i should really enjoy. but in reality i just find their music annoying.

Considering At the Drive in is doing a worldwide tour through the end of November I doubt Mars Volta could get their act together by D4N

But you SHOULD be excited that blood and semen are confirmed?

I remember the festival days when a B&S confirmation would really move tickets. What the hell happened to this country. #thisisamerica

Agree completely with this. The combination of the unique venue, lots of cheap accommodations in walking distance (bookable right up to the festival), lineup composition, cheap tix, and being able to do two solid days (fly in Sat afternoon and out early Mon morning) are what bring me back despite the terrible timing and unpredictable weather.
Spreading it out into multiple venues or putting it all in a stadium or some other bullshit would kill the draw.
This Houston Press writer has several interesting suggestions. There aren’t a whole lot of American festivals where you’d associate some of his wishlist. Then again, we already know we will be getting at least a few unique acts.

There were a couple of errors. I wasn’t judgment calling on the writer, just putting it out there. I don’t want to see everyone he mentions, but there are plenty of acts he listed that I’d love to see there. Fwiw his bio at the bottom says he mostly covers local Houston stuff seeing more live shit than anyone.
