In Bloom already takes place in Houston in March and I'm not sure they would want to compete even if the fests are pretty different.
It's the same company running both. I don't know how much of a success In Bloom was, but if they want to keep that going, D4N would have to stay in the Winter, move to fall and compete with ACL, or move to Summer. Summer in Houston would be brutal.
Free Press doesn't have a stake in In Bloom/Free Press Fest anymore. Its owned by Live Nation.

Seems most likely they'd take some time, get their finances in order, and do it in Sept/Oct/Nov 2019 and try to co-exist with ACL the same way Pitchfork co-exists with Lolla.
Moving back to like March and competing with In Bloom, III Points, and Coachella's radius clause seems like another death wish.
Does it truly take months to put a line up together? Could a month be long enough to piece it altogether with their team and have the line up out in September?

Organisations mostly start already during or right after the festival of the current year. Some bookers or agents will be there to connect and to put some things already in the pipeline for the following year. I've heard a story about a festival in Switzerland and also in the Netherlands that tried to book Radiohead 3 years in advance lol. But D4N isn't a summer festival and is still a very 'young' festival so idk how it goes around there.

I'd imagine a festival can't cobble a good lineup together in the span of a few months. Tours are routed far in advance.

Maybe they have their top 3 or 4 locked. I imagine as you file down the lineup, the easier the bookings become. Probably the bottom 2 lines can be plugged in with anyone.
Anyway, yeah we all have bits and pieces of info but nothing is for sure until I see tickets on sale.
yeah id say most of the people they get are off tour.
NIN (before), Aphex (before), St. V (before), Tyler (after), Justice (in the middle). Godspeed was booked for this and then a little bit later booked a couple of other texas shows, maybe that had already been booked, but it felt on the fly.
Looks like the last three pages goaded them into posting something/anything =)~~~
My logic is where Mad Dog's is at. Ain't no one touring for real that week. Any headliner can come for a one off as well as most mid tier bands. I would imagine most smaller/mid acts that D4N would book would go out of their way to play a gig like this.
One off's should be more expensive than when the show is included in the tour. I think as organisation, you're shooting yourself in the foot right there even though you might get some exclusive acts.. It's gonna be real expensive. In that case Le Guess Who? for example is doing a better job, placing themselves in a period when a lot of bands are touring.
Not to be a total asskisser/apologist for this fest, but I recall an interview, I think after the 2016 fest, where Omar said that they were already to the point in the booking side of things where performers were contacting them to be apart of the fest instead of vice versa. Probably not an entire lineup's worth, nor is that how booking works in general, but yeah, it's at a basic tour deadzone in the time of year, one-off acts who are interested seems reasonable enough.

That happens to litteraly almost every succesful festival / event. I mean even though there was barely any gain from the past couple of year, they did get a lot of press and were named a few times as festival with one of the best line ups of 2017 by some blogs.
Whenever fests ask for suggestions the responses are usually dumpster fires, but the suggestions being made on the D4N are surprisingly decent. Good job d4n fans

I was thinking the same thing as I scrolled through them the other night. Really good suggestions. I would attend if they got a fraction of that, if I could get them time.

outside of the one Neil Young everything was pretty on point

Seems like the D4N fanbase is quite monolithic, perhaps moreso than other fests. We all pretty much want the same thing. Chemical Bros and shit like that.

Speaking of us all wanting the same things, Craig Finn where Priests was or The Hold Steady where of Montreal were would be nice.
