I am not on here as much anymore, but I will chime in. If someone has a so-called personal beef against a festival, they should not be making and being responsible for that festival thread. It's annoying and can put others off. I speak from experience. It's just that simple.
One of the things that made me grow to love this place were the many intellectual smart asses on here. Because to be honest, I absolutely love a good smart ass. But a troll. I can't fucking stand them. I found this definition of a troll online. Someone who actively watches a forum. Not to be confused with a lurker, or just a forum frequenter, the troll annoys, pesters, and generally insults any thread they open. And that's how I view what has happened here. One of the reasons I started staying away was opening my bookmark to recent threads and seeing one name over and over again. It gets old real quick. I know it has driven others away. And that's just sad.
Oh knock it off. You PMed two years ago saying you were going through a hard time and playing on my sympathy to get me to give you the Bonnaroo lineup ahead of time. I gave it to you, and all I asked in return was that you keep it to yourself. You immediately told a bunch of people and I told you to fuck off. Thats your beef with me and why I am a "troll" to you.
Seriously, should there be a limit on how many major festival threads one can run?
Personally, I don't think there should be a limit on how many major festival threads one can run, because then that is one more thing that has to be policed by mods. Also then we have to define major festival, and then ask if there is a limit on how many "minor" festival threads somebody can run, and so on. Gets complicated.
Instead I think there should be a general cultural shift at inforoo to emphasize that running a festival thread is a responsibility. Not a huge responsibility but a responsibility nonetheless. Keep the OP updated with lineup info, other useful information that is perhaps carried forward year over year, etc. And since some people have more time to dedicate to threads, they shouldn't be penalized if they want to take on the responsibility of multiple threads.
The question then becomes what if someone starts a thread and does a poor job of keeping up with it. Is it possible to moderate a thread to make someone else the OP? Is that a huge pain?
Also, while I can see both sides of the argument, I think generally speaking the subsequent year's festival thread shouldn't begin until the current year festival is complete.
The problem with no limits is a land grab situation and a fight over who else wants it. Sort of like where we are now.
And no, we can't change the OP. We would have to take over the thread.
And this is what we want to change. People are going to knock the various festivals in the thread. We can't stop that. Or want to. But we would prefer that the threads be run by someone that goes to the festival, will run it responsibly, and keep it up to date. And obviously people cared, and now that this thread has given them the opportunity, they are speaking up. You feel like you are the target of this momentum. You are only one of many catalyst to a change we have been wanting to make for some time.
Honestly, I think you can trace part of the problem back to the Roo Headliner thread. It used to somewhat less of a dumpster fire up until 2012 or so. It became kind of a running joke to not care and go off topic in there because for months we had very little info and the thread was full of noobs and trolls anyway. Part of the reason it was acceptable is we had all available information readily available in other threads, so it because tradition to turn the headliner thread to become a free-for-all. I'll take some blame for that. Lots of us should. The thing is that attitude slowly started to carry over to some of the other festival threads. Now it just seems like a lot of these threads are far too chaotic and devoid of actual discussion. Again, I've been guilty of it. I trolled the Firefly thread pretty hard a couple years ago.
What I'm getting at is if you are looking to reform the boards I think you should consider at least encouraging that these threads stay vaguely on topic. Point the bad joke makers and trolls back to the Roo Headliner thread where they belong.
I'd also encourage the OPs of future threads to find inspiration in my exemplary handling of past Roo Clue threads. Sometimes you just gotta curse people and let them know nobody likes them.
I am totally guilty of popping into threads I have little or no intention of attending and engaging in off topic conversation. However I am genuinely interested in the lineup of almost any festival because I follow music festivals like other people follow professional sports.
Anywho I think the practice of light hearted off topic banter in inappropriate threads is one of the more charming parts of inforoo and is worth holding on to, and I think any negative impact could be blunted by the thread creator being more vigilant about keeping the OP updated with useful information.

Why because you guys are pals in real life? She was shitty to me, and now she is pretending she is an innocent unbias spectator.

Yes she is my friend. Where in her post did she name you?
Its pretty damn obvious thats who she is talking about. When she does come back around here she always jumps on the "fuck Launchpad" train. I respect that she is your friend. Your friend was an asshole to me after I was kind to her.

What part of "Please keep up the good ideas and bickering to a minimum. No need to make things personal or get into a name throwing contest" did you not get?

does it really fucking matter? this was two years ago, let it go

It doesnt matter. But if shes going to come around here, feign innocent, call me a troll, and say that seeing me post is what drove her away: I think I have the right to expose what her real issue with me is.
it’s always sucked but reddit is the only other option so we’re all kinda stuck here
Haha damn you quoted me before I deleted it since I realized it wasn't really germane to the discussion at hand and I didn't want to throw more fuel on the fire.
Inforoo itself as a website is well-structured, well-modded, and has a lot of genuinely good people that are fun to interact with. But the overall ethos of the community is incessantly sarcastic and arrogant. It's tiring.

Oh, you fucking asshole. You are without a doubt the worst. Say whatever you want, that’s what you do. Unfortunately, I don’t have my old PMs because I deleted my account in the midst of a mental breakdown. Yes, you told me the Bonnaroo headliners. And I was out eating dinner with friends and accidentally let a name slip. Told the group not to repeat that. Promised them. But then sang_xcx runs his big fucking month, after promising not to. Which led to a huge fucking fight. I felt horrible about what happened. I really did. I’d tell you to confirm that but I really don’t fucking care anymore. You are a plague to this place. You whine more than anyone I know. And I have three kids so I know all about whining. My “real issue” isn’t what transpired over 2 years ago. It’s you being the terrible, no good person you are.
And that’s the last time I will ever respond to you. I can fucking promise you that.
Sorry Druid . I had to say that my piece. I am done.

I think stuff like regulating thread titles and maintaining order will really tank the quality of the shitposting. As a result, I think a lot of people will browse this site a lot less and it will lose a big part of what makes it fun. Thread title shitposting, next years threads being started right after the lineup drops, and other miscellaneous shenanigans make this site bareable. You can’t get rid of the dank.

There's a difference in light-hearted off topic banter and pages and pages of awful jokes and fighting. Which is the problem I see with some of these threads but I honestly don't follow them enough to care all that much. That was just my observation. That we've become too comfortable with going off topic and that at least being mindful of that might sway things back towards a more balanced approach.
And while it's important to have the basic facts in the OP, it seems obvious preference in an ongoing thread should be given to those who actually want to discuss the festival over people who want to post memes and make funny quips. Which are generally not very funny. The reason I even bring this up is because the mods are talking about changing the site around to be about festivals in general. I don't see how they will attract many new people with the state of some of the threads but what do I know.

Yeah I am such an awful person that when a complete stranger came to me saying they were going through a rough time, I did what little I could to help them out. Such a terrible no good person.

The real issue is there is a "Launchpad vs 5-6 people on this board" that has hit critical mass. Quality Control and Improvement is always a good, welcome discussion, but it really isn't about "who starts what" thread.
Is LP entirely innocent? No, but neither are these 5 or 6 posters who, at any chance, on any thread, try to pester him into response, then hide under some veil of innocence. Other posters have noticed this and commented on "Why is there such hatred for LP from this select group of posters?"
I'll also add I think it may also be a power struggle since it appears LP is the only one w any knowledge of "scoops" around here these days. Take that fwiw.
Also, is there a way you can add MODS? Or create something slightly lower w not as much authority/power to help contain the madness.
