I read somewhere just earlier that Korea is staring down a $10 billion loss. But hey maybe it will drum up tourism in this country that doesn't really give a flip about winter athletics. lol. This is why only two countries put up a bid for 2022, one of them being the most populated country in the world, and why there is no Winter Olympics set for 2026 yet.
We keep hearing about ski events being postponed due to winds but I had no idea everything else was so bad. Olympic costs are always astronomic but proponents of a city's bid always say the benefits of the exposure are long-term and difficult to quantify, so I don't know whether the expense is an investment or an indulgence. If it helps foster lasting goodwill with the North it's worth $10 billion, but the experience sounds horrible.
I *thought* I was going to die snowboarding once... on the bunny hill... my first time snowboarding... which was my last time snowboarding. I've always been fairly athletic and can ski a little bit without being terrified, but holy shit that seemed hard.
No. It is terrifying! Both of your feet are strapped into that thing. Your only defense is sitting down!
Fortunately for me, sitting down is one of my best survival skills.
I've got to imagine that there will be bids for 2026. It seems like Lake Placid submits a bid every go-round. I don't think that there are enough hotel rooms in the region to accommodate it in the 21st Century. Also, there is very limited infrastructure in and out of the Adirondacks. I suspect Salt Lake City or Vancouver may go again, though.
But yeah, more importantly he's a shitty human being.
I'm admittedly ignorant of this. What did he do?
Sexually harassed the female drummer in his band Bad Things in 2016. Denied quilt but admitted to sending explicit texts once she produced them. Settled out of court. And how am I just now hearing about this? They did a good job keeping it quiet.
There are some NSFW pics here, but also some other texts, as well as the complaint filed in California Superior Court. If you read the complaint, he at best looks like a huge dick, and really looks much worse than that. He's a nightmare of a boss, but worse than that thinks funding someone's career means he gets to control every aspect of their life. And then there is the sexual harassment stuff.

I just got a Facebook message from a friend that was video of Shaun White's gold medal run that he took from the stands. I didn't even know the guy was at the Olympics. He is Korean-American and has family in SK, so it's not a huge surprise he was there, but still.
I know the way the conversation has turned in this thread that that loses a lot of its impact. It does for me, too. Still. On some level, that's pretty cool.

The Men's 1000m Short Track final was crazy with three skaters biting it with like a lap and a half left. John Henry Krueger takes advantage to win USA's first speedskating medal in 8 years. Speed skating is my favorite winter olympic sport (long track more than short track) and USA's failure in Sochi and now Pyeongchang is really frustrating.
In fact, we are frustrating everywhere. Shiffrin does great to win giant slalom but then can't recover to medal in her best event. Vonn draws first in the super G and finishes just out of a medal, making a big mistake near the bottom of the hill. Nathan Chen has a disasterous short program, almost makes up for it in the free skate (and nails six quads!) but finishes 5th. Lindsay Jacobellis again suffers a crushing disappointment by finishing fourth in snowboard cross, after leading for two thirds of the race. USA Men's Hockey stinks. USA women's hockey had a tough loss to Canada, we'll see that match again I think.
I probably care too much about this but it stinks.
The NHL really screwed the US and Canada. Especially the US considering the smaller hockey talent pool.
I was most frustrated with the mixed doubles curling team. They started out with such promise and it was all downhill from there.
This hockey just isn't fun to watch, with Ilya Kovalchuk - the #1 pick in the 2001 NHL draft - sniping goals against 19 year old Americans. At least make it an u-23 tournament or something.
Great game. USA was out-classed a bit in the first two periods but they were on fire from the third on. You hate to see it decided in a shootout but if it is going to be decided that way, that's the result that you want!
My five yr old sister is not into Curling. It was difficult to explain what exactly was going on to her, and she was a little confused by all the sweeping, but most people have that reaction so it was an uphill battle to begin with.
