Alright, how long before they cancel some of the shows and say something like it was a “production” issue beyond “our control”? I think Katy Perry pulled that stunt last year for some of her shows, saying something similar.
I saw Smashing Pumpkins like, 8-10 years ago at a small venue. Played the hits, saw Jimmy Chamberlin play, checked it off the box. Wouldnt go again.
yea. I saw them in an arena on the mellon collie tour. I saw Billy and Jimmy at the Ryman about a decade ago. The ryman show was one of the loudest experiences of my life, but I had great seats, it was a great setlist and the crowd was into it. No need to drive my ass up to quacking Glendale for a half empty, overpriced arena show.
Arcade Fire must have definitely lost money on their last tour. And there were definitely freebies handed out (which is how i got through the door).
Arcade Fire definitely lost money on their last tour? I didn't realize you were privy to their financials. Even a half full arena holds 10k people. 10k tickets at $50-$85 a pop is a lot of dough.
And sure, almost every show will have some giveaways as a promotion. But the vast majority of people who saw that AF tour paid to get in the door.
I am confident to say that they lost money, given that the tour would have also been used to pay off the expenses associated with producing and releasing Everything Now. This was a massive gamble on their end. Not saying they will be filing bankruptcy, but there's a reason AF and their long-time manager parted ways during this time period.
Also, lots of cheap seat holders were upgraded from nosebleeds to lower level, and those tickets were going for less than $50 a piece. Plus, did you see the production they toured with? Think of the fixed costs associated with renting out the biggest arenas in each market, as well as paying all the staff/equipment rental, including for days that they were on the road but not playing.

They grossed 13.9 million. Their numbers are pretty similar to Sting, The Lumineers and LCD Soundsystem. They were 102 out of the top 200 NA tours. If they didn’t at least break even they should fire their accountant along with their manager.

Oh, we should definitely feel bad for the accounting team at Live Nation HQ in Atlanta who did the projections. Because the other artists that you mentioned must have definitely had less fixed costs and greater margins.
To put it in perspective: U2's 360 Tour that went from 2009-2011 didn't go into the black until its third year on the road. And most major label bands start off their tours in debt (to recoup the costs from recording/producing/marketing their album).

If Arcade Fire spent U2 money on their album and tour production it might have been worth seeing.
Edit: also, the Reflektor tour did almost identical numbers, 13.5 gross off 8,500 tickets and 435k per night. I would hope they budgeted their follow up with those figures in mind

And Reflektor tour tickets were on Groupon, as well as handed out through giveaway portals. It was nothing but hubris on AF's part to assume they could sell out massive arenas in a 360 setup after that.

I thought the real hubris was them thinking people wanted to hear an AF album of ABBA rip offs.
I really want to see this tour but I'm not driving 5 hrs to ATL for it. The arena idea seemed pretty overly ambitious considering all they are adding is James Iha.
When I saw the Pumpkins last in '15 on that co-bill with Manson he had just brought Jimmy back last minute. The show sounded great, got to hear Thru The Eyes of Ruby and Mayonnaise, but it wasn't epic or anything.
If they had D'arcy, even though it appears she is a crackhead now, I would be more all about it as I missed out on the Melloncollie tour in '96 as I was in 7th grade and my mom wouldn't let me go with my friends (bitch). I was in love with SP back then and still reminisce over them pretty often.
It'll all come down to what the actual setlists look like I guess.
If they are playing Eye, Porcelina, XYU, F.U, Soma, and some deeper cuts from Adore like Crestfallen or Pug every night I could def see myself hitting the road for a cheap ticket.

the fact that he posted the setlist prior to the tour starting is also kind of mind boggling tbh
But also kinda cool. I am much more likely to go after seeing that. But he better fucking come through. If that's not what they end up playing that will backfire.

yeah, but if that's the set order, there might be a deece amount of people leaving early. also makes it seem like there's no reason to go to multiple shows. granted most big touring acts play the same set every time, but at least there's a little mystery.

lol @ you guys for discussing Smashing Pumpkins tour in a Smashing Pumpkins' tour thread.
I think I was actually in 6th-7th grade when that album came out, but I have no desire to see this shitty tour. I had a zero shirt too.

I see both sides of it. It's desperate. This is what we're playing guys please come see us! But like I said it's also kinda cool like no joke, we're playing everything you want, here's the list. I'm going to wait for a $20 groupon and I'll definitely be excited to see them. I saw them when they did the Orange Peel run in 08? Jimmy was there and it was great, even with the new band members and new songs. I don't really think it's going to be that different with Iha added, it's just the thought of it that get people excited.

"it got me thinking why not share our pool of PROPOSED songs (meaning the list we'll use to build The Shiny and Oh So Bright set, so these aren't in any particular order)."
Sounds more like what songs they are practicing and not the actual setlist.

tbh i just read the song list. i just assumed whatever he was saying was unbearable.
