Tame Impala are most likely done playing festival gigs where they're not headlining.
That means that either BC grabs them this year as a lighter #3, or they wait until 2020 where they'll be an unquestionable headliner. The latter seems like the smart move for both parties, especially if it means Tame play their own headlining show in Boston in 2019, something they haven't done since March 2013.
But yes, imo they're a headliner or they don't play.
Agreed that if this is the case then they should wait a couple of years. I really like Tame Impala, but they'd definitely be the smallest/lightest headliner of the new BC. I think they'd do an Agganis show on a headline tour, (again, similar to QOTSA and other bands that were second-row lineup names,) and I don't think it would sell out anywhere near as fast as The 1975 did. Honestly I wouldn't be that surprised if their Boston show was at the Pavilion, though I do think that would sell out fairly quickly. Ultimately, I'm hoping they're on the lineup in the #4 spot, but I'm not optimistic about it happening that way.
Best case scenario is them playing the red stage before Twenty One Pilots IMO. However I absolutely love them so i wouldn't mind if they headlined. them playing somewhere like blue hills or boch center would suck though because their tix are super overpriced and its hard to get good seats.

Im not convinced Parker would be lighter than Chance. Tame headlined Panorama in 2017, was the #1 overall at Pitchfork last year and is now the #1 at Shaky Knees. Chance wasnt anywhere close to as high as Tame Impala at any festival of similar stature.

He headlined Lollapalooza... (yes, that’s his hometown and a little different)

that wasnt pre BC but yeah I suppose they knew he would be headlining Lolla at the time of booking him. However I know that the whole Kanye dropping out rumors might dispute that a bit

I could frankly see Tame Impala trying out for TD Garden at this point.

TD garden or Agganis arena would be nice providing they use the GA floor layout.
Guaranteed that Tame Impala will go for a GA Floor setup.
Does Agganis still split the floor in half, with Floor 1 and Floor 2 options? If so, fuck that place!
They do, sadly. its sad because the floors are always half empty. like theres plenty of room in floor 1, it was half full at brockhampton and qotsa despite being sold out.
I hate Agganis a lot, probably more than any other Boston venue, but I actually think the best thing they do is separate the Floor into 1 and 2. (Totally aware that I'm in the minority here.) The floor capacity is a fire code issue and set so that each person theoretically has a certain square footage of space, but then in reality everyone squishes together toward the front so it looks half full. They can't really do much to change that. GA Floor at the Garden, the whole back half of the floor is basically empty and it looks bad. Splitting it into two sections spreads the crowd around a little and gives people more personal space, which I'm always in favor of. If you hate being stuck in Floor 2, be more diligent about getting presale codes and/or jumping online right at 10am for Floor 1. I've personally never had an issue getting Floor 1 tickets.

oh yeah me neither, but I feel bad for people who are stuck in floor 2 haha.
My girlfriend loved seeing Brockhampton there though, she hates being squished in between people so the fact that she was able to have personal space and a good spot made her happy.
I totally understand it being a fire code issue though, that makes a lot more sense.

I've also had the good fortune of being in Floor 1 at Agganis a few times, which is super awesome if you arrive late and can thus still get a good spot.
However, getting Floor 1 isn't always as straightforward, especially with Ticketmaster fuckery. I was super lucky to get one for The Cure, but it was not easy given that that show sold out instantly. Plus, from what I noticed, the floor 2 people would still squish together to be as close as possible.
And I frankly don't buy the fire code thing, given that TD Garden is able to get away with a full floor. It's probably just a building policy. MSG in NYC used to have this as well, but they now switched over to a full floor for certain bands. Agganis could easily do the same.
I will never go to a show at Agganis again after seeing LCD there. Worst sound of any venue I’ve ever been to, so bad I left early.
Were you on the floor or in seating? I know the venue has a notoriously bad reputation for acoustics, but the sound was great at the aforementioned The Cure show a couple years ago.

That was in my top 5 favorite shows that I saw last year, but I was also Floor 1 where I imagine sound issues are less noticeable. Any time I've been in the loge somewhere, I agree that it sounds awful. Is that an Agganis issue or an arena/large venue issue, though? I feel like any time I've been in the balcony at the Garden, the sound sucks there too. Fenway is probably the worst, but that's more due to dimensions and acoustics.
Hopefully the Shaky Knees lineup gives us a better perspective of whos playing. Last year we had their entire top 3 at Boston Calling.
It’s bad
The headliners definitely feel like they'd all be 2nd line at the new, supersized BC, but I could see some acts from throughout this lineup in the BC lineup.
The great big caveat, of course, is that Shaky Knees isn't in the "all genres" category of Boston Calling, Lollapalooza, Gov Ball, etc., so BC will have a significant amount of rap, pop, and possibly EDM in the mix.

I was in Floor 1 also and it was unbearable for me, everything sounded so muffled. I saw them a week later in Brooklyn and they played the same setlist, it was a night and day difference.
Sounds interesting, described as a venue for artists "too big for Paradise but too small for House of Blues."
Sadly it's gonna be a livenation venue though.
Livenation sucks, but accepting that they're not going anywhere anytime soon, I'm optimistic about this place. I'm so sick of going to Paradise shows that are oversold and slammed wall to wall, where I end up off in the corner at a terrible side-angle. If a lot of these bands that sell out Paradise (900 capacity) quickly but aren't big enough to fill HOB (2,400) are now playing at a brand new venue of a more appropriate size (1,500) with no giant poles in the floor, then it's a huge huge upgrade. The scary part is the stuff about it being a "luxury music hall" with VIP tables, but I'm hoping that's half marketing BS and/or in practice ends up being like Royale where the clubby aspects don't intrude on the shows.

Royale (booked by Live Nation's competitor AEG) is already the perfect venue for acts between Paradise and HOB. This is just LN trying to compete with them directly.

I don't think Royale is quite big enough, at like 1,000-1,100ish people, but I totally agree that in an ideal world more of these sold out Paradise shows would be there. It's annoying when the business side of all this gets in the way, but the problem is with competing promoters, as you alluded to. Tons of bands partner with Livenation, and Livenation doesn't book Royale at all, so shows get stuffed into Paradise. Livenation needs their own venue around that size, which is why I think this new place will work. Ultimately, if my show-going experience improves, i don't really care who's competing with who or what the reasoning is.
8 crossovers between the two last year, including all three SK headliners.
I'll take: Father John Misty Liz Phair Deerhunter Japanese Breakfast Soccer Mommy Foxing Natalie Prass Low Cut Connie
Ill take: Tame Impala Beck Interpol Foals Father John Misty Tash Sultana Foxing I guess Grouplove
Low Cut Connie and Curtis Harding are high on my Boston Calling wishlist, but there are another dozen or so acts I'd be happy to see in the lineup, and a bunch more that I might enjoy if I checked them out.

I saw Grouplove at a WFNX show on the waterfront, which was literally the last event they held before going off the air. I've never seen a band look like they were having more fun onstage. They're the sort of festival act where I'd skip their local headlining show, but be happy to see in a festival lineup.
Welp, now that we have a better idea of who's touring around May:
Kanye West | Twenty One Pilots | Tame Impala Vampire Weekend | The 1975 | A$AP Rocky Big Red Machine | Greta Van Fleet | Tash Sultana
I still don't understand the logic of Boston Calling booking The 1975 two years later, in basically the same spot, when they're playing Agganis 4-6 days later.
Big Red Machine and Tash probably wouldn't be that high. BC is bigger than Shaky and Tash is #10 there.
I have a feeling we'll get Incubus in the Paramore/Weezer spot
I'd bet money that BC would flip Vampire Weekend and Tame Impala in that lineup.

The feng shui of it all is really bad there. Not only is the sound bad, but the barrier between the arena bowl and the concourse is designed in a way that you're constantly getting that bright concourse light coming into the arena bowl. Also, the stair lights are brighter than at most arenas and you can tell which songs inspire a drove of bathroom breaks and beer runs.
I've been to three or four shows there, and I've got to say that the vibe of the venue made all of those shows a little less enjoyable than they would have been to me elsewhere (despite the fact that all of the performers were huge favorites of mine.)
