As someone who felt my mind literally melt out of my ears, reform into human shape, and dance next to me at their 2017 Panorama performance, allow me to say...wut?
That reminds me of what happened when I saw Little Feat in Cleveland in the late 70's. I caught a ride to the show with one of the editors from my college paper, who was our journalism school's own Hunter S. Thompson. He, and his friend who was driving, started eating peyote as we got close to downtown.
The show was great and I turned in what I thought was a well-written and insightful review to the entertainment editor of our college paper.
Much to my surprise, they didn't run my review. Instead, they ran a review written by the Hunter Thompson-knockoff who talked about how the sounds turned into colorful spheres and hung suspended in mid-air and so forth.
Only I, and the author, knew that it wasn't really the music that had been reviewed. It was his peyote trip.

The most interesting question, of course, was the one where they listed a whole bunch of acts and asked whom you'd like to see at Boston Calling. I won't spoil the options for you, but it was jam-packed with acts who've already played, acts that haven't, and acts that get talked about a lot as potential festival headliners.

I chose Beyonce and Neil Young, and entered David Gilmour

You, too, can fill out the survey, even if you didn't get the e-mail.

To clarify, the survey prize offered through the e-mail is for a three day GA pass or three day upgrade to VIP, if you already have three day passes. This link offers a one-day VIP only.
Idk if anyone noticed this but on the survey it lists headliners from other festivals taking place this year in order: Gov Ball, Coachella, New Orleans Jazz fest, Firefly, BottleRock, Coachella 2017, and then a bunch of random headliners. Perhaps they took a lot into consideration this year what other festivals are booking in order to appeal to the widest range of people.
When was the last time The Strokes played Boston? Agganis 2006?
According to Setlist.fm, they played Boston twice in 2006. Agganis in the spring and what was then called Bank of America Pavilion (which just got its umpteenth new name last week) in Sept.
Can we just talk about what a fantastic booking Black Star is? easily my most anticipated set friday and cracks my top 5 all weekend.
Definitely not getting the love it deserves. But I chalk that up to the fact that they aren't that active as a duo anymore and don't have much "new" material. So there's less buzz about them overall. I bet a lot of people would be surprised when they learn it's Mos Def & Talib Kweli. I'd hope so, anyway.

I just spun The Ecstatic today and got really excited when the song with Talib (History) came on. Definitely my second most anticipated set behind Tame.

I'm absolutely shocked whenever they book anyone who released music before 2000. They've done that less and less as the years have progressed, and have generally shown less willingness than other festivals to book older acts.
In a lineup peppered with acts who seem more like SNL musical parodies than credible artists, Black Star is a damn fine booking.

Eminem, Tool, Sigur Ros... all from before 2000.
I'm not saying that they don't do it at all, only that they do it less and less over time, and less than other festivals.
If you created a median date of first album release for all Boston Calling performers, edition by edition, you'd likely find that the median date has grown more recent over the years.
It's ridiculous that out of nearly 50 musical acts this year, only Black Star and Guster predate the year 2000.

Why is that ridiculous? That was almost 20 years ago. Festivals in 99 weren't booking a bunch of 70s bands

Jesus Christ dude...
C'mon, Greta Van Fleet is such a parody of classic rock band that Colin Jost made a joke about them on SNL, right after they performed.
Clairo is an SNL sketch waiting to happen -- monotone teen girl singer with cheap Casio becomes icon to millions of 11 - 14 year old girls.
SOB X RBE -- every gangsta cliche, twenty years too late

Hmm, George Clinton and James Brown played Woodstock 99.
The lineup of the Boston edition of Guinness Fleadh at Suffolk Downs in '98 or '99 included Van Morrison (who cancelled right before the event), Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, and John Lee Hooker.

Of course Woodstock would have older artists. It was celebrating a festival that happened 30 years before.
And lol a Guinness sponsored festival in Boston sounds like the peak of cultural relevancy
Plus idk what fests you're looking at now that are booking a bunch of 80s/90s artists.

Bonnaroo - Phish
BottleRock - Neil Young, The Dandy Warhols, Cypress Hill, Santana
Coachella - Charlotte Gainsbourg
Granted, it seems like many festivals have backed away from booking legacy acts. It just seems like Boston Calling started a couple of years before everyone else. Plus, they've never done the sort of old school nostalgia booking like Lionel Richie or Huey Lewis and the News which other fests have done (not that I'm clamoring to see those two specific acts).

You could seriously not be doing a worse job of making your case...
But also this fest has been headlined by Eminem, Tool, Beck, the Pixies, and Modest Mouse, and featured sets from Weezer, Sigur Ros, Converge, Buffalo Tom, Steve Malkmus, Ben Harper, The Replacements, Nas x The Roots, and Neutral Milk Hotel

And they have booked increasingly fewer older acts since 2016. I'm doing a fine job of making the case that Boston Calling has been reducing the number of pre-2000 acts they've booked in the last three years, compared to previous years and compared to other festivals.
You make a valid point by listing Converge and Buffalo Tom, but their bookings were part of the Boston legacy bands kick they were on in '17 and '18. Most people don't buy festival passes to see the same local bands that play around town at least a few times per year.
