I can't believe that they were unable to book another old school rap act to replace Black Star. It's not like Public Enemy, KRS-One, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and others aren't around and still performing at least occasionally.
Meanwhile, I checked out Bear Hands and continue to marvel at the way Boston Calling unearths all of these mediocre rock bands I've never heard of before to take lineup spots which could be given to much better rock bands. This is very much a booking in the tradition of Maximo Park and Wolf Parade.

What are they doing booking Bear Hands as a replacement lol
BC year after year has 1-3 cancelations (If I recall) per festival and I just don't see that issue with too many other festivals. I wonder why, genuinely lol

I was wondering that too. and the cancellations rarely have worthy replacements(only one that comes to mind is Converge replacing MoBo)

If anyone's thinking of bailing on Friday, now, definitely check out Christine & the Queens on their own if/when they come through your neck of the woods. Heloise is the capital-t Truth.

That's the big one I'd be bummed about missing. Plus Yaeji, Lord Huron, and Fred Armisen

I'm not sure why it seems to keep happening, but it's mighty depressing. I actually worked with a few of the guys who started Crashline Productions when I was working at the Boston Phoenix (when it was still around), so I've always have held this festival in high regard. Can't say I'm a fan of where this festival has been going either - I'm hoping they can turn it around next year, if this year isn't too much of a loss.
Bear Hands is an especially lazy booking condidering they're the opener on TOPs tour. You'd think theyd use some leftover Janelle Monae, Black Star, and Sasha Sloan money on Earl Sweatshirt.

Lord Huron, IMHO, sounds like a cross between watered-down My Morning Jacket and watered-down Fleet Foxes.

Yeah you're not really wrong, I like both those bands quite a bit though so it's not too surprising I enjoy Lord Huron. Not like I'm crazy about them, and I've already seen them a couple times, but I would've liked to see some of their set if I was there

I don't think it's been mentioned here yet, but they're not doing Eaux Claires in 2019, but state that they will be back in 2020.
It's funny, for all of the complaints I and many others have had about Boston Calling lineups over the years, the exact same booking team has knocked it out of the park every year at Eaux Claires.

I've never been a huge fan of Janelle. I like Chvrches, though seen them a few times - most recently last year. I'm assuming they're against 21P on the Blue, which works.
I'd see Christine and am looking forward to Gang of Youths on Friday. Probably need to do more research into the rest of that lineup. I would check out GVF out of curiosity, if it's not opposing anything better.
I love Chvrches, but I just had great seats for their fall show at the Orpheum and their BC set will likely be almost exactly the same. Alternatively, I missed Janelle's Pavilion show last July and haven't seen her since 2013, so I was really excited for her set. It could definitely be worse (see: Black Star being replaced by a much lower billed band I've never heard of) but it still stings. Can't wait to see the schedule and have 3 conflicts across the 5-6 bands I still want to see that day.
