Looooooved Rex OC's set at Panorama. He might have a new album out by June, and since he played so many other US fests this year it could be a huge steal.
Also, it's been in the mocks but I really think the 1975 is the #4 on this lineup a la Gambino in 2017 (came off his huge 3rd release) and Yeah Yeah Yeah's this year (who imo should have been above Travis)
1) Had zero idea Santigold released a new album this year until yesterday (did EVERYONE release new music in 2018?) 2) Hope Gov Ball finds a place for her to be on the lineup

Based on crowd sizes last year, no way YYY should have been above Travis Scott
Travis Scott is one of the biggest artists right now, who just sold out 2 nights at the Garden. YYY's last tour brought them to Kings Theater.
Not only was Travis rightfully billed above them, I don't even think YYYs should've been in the top 5.
Agreed, this legacy BS billing annoys me to no end. Business-wise, Post Malone should have been Top 3 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs should have been right below Halsey. The attendees at this fest (for the most part) couldn’t care less about honoring “legacy” acts. Tbh, I don’t think YYY’s are deserving of that title anyway...

Also if Florence and the Machine is a headliner, be prepared for her to not play her full set time. She was about 20-25 min late to her 2015 Gov Ball appearance and last week at Not So Silent Night, she played 37 min of her 50 min slot.

A couple of things:
1) I think that's very not true. I know the aughts were a long time ago, but YYYs were a huge part of the indie rock explosion that happened at that time. Karen O was an icon of that era. I don't disagree that Post Malone was a bigger draw in 2018, and it's not like YYYs are on the level of, say, RHCP when it comes to legacy booking, but they still fit the bill, IMO.
2) I think some of this has to do with when and how these deals get signed, which I imagine is, sometimes, months in advance of even the lineup announcement. It could be they booked Post Malone and negotiated a certain position on the lineup, and then he blew up huge in the interim and, oops, now he's in a lower spot than his popularity would merit come the following June. I mean, look at Jack White and Eminem - both of them were all over the festival circuit as headliners last year despite the fact that both put out new records that weren't very well received, which surely hurt the excitement factor around them as headliners by the time the festivals rolled around...but those deals were probably inked before anyone even knew that was a possibility.

Yes we get it. Can’t spell crap without rap amirite fellas. Rock is dead. The new norm is Kanye Lil pump and the 1975.

I'm...not sure if you're talking shit at me, here, or not. I like lots of hip-hop. I'm psyched Vince Staples is on the lineup. I'm hoping for Noname. Run the Jewels just announced yesterday they have a new record coming in 2019, and I'd be fucking hyped to see them on the lineup. I mean, there are hip-hop artists I don't like, but there are rock artists I don't like, too. And I'm not sure how saying, "Post Malone's position on the lineup could have been due to his deal being signed before his popularity exploded" is me crapping on a rap artist. I'm just so confused by what you wrote, here. Help.

I don’t understand your confusion as to how and why acts are placed where they are. If the headliners here were Portishead, System of a Down and KSG, guess which day would sell out first. This is by and large a child’s festival who wouldn’t care if a serial rapist headlined as long as there’s good “vibes” and it’s “mad hype”.

I'm not confused by that in the slightest, friend. I completely understand the business behind it. Absolutely *nothing* I wrote in the post you were responding to was about that. Someone said something about how Post Malone should have been billed higher than YYYs last year. I said, "Yes, I agree he's more popular, but maybe his position on the bill was negotiated before his popularity exploded." That's all. In other discussions, I've said things like, "No way Kanye gets booked and doesn't headline - he's a headliner-grade artist." I've also said the same about Kids See Ghosts, or that there'd have to be someone really HUGE (like Drake) on the bill that day to push them to the undercard. Nothing in there had anything to do with how I feel about those artists' music, or about them, personally.
Christ. I know I'm not the world's greatest writer, but I'm failing to see how I'm expressing confusion *anywhere* about how and why acts are placed where they are. I have strong feelings about some artists, for sure (as do, I'd imagine, most people on this board), but if you think I wouldn't understand the festival booking Kanye West in a headlining slot, we're missing each other on the communication front by a country fucking mile.

Honestly, and I say this as someone who grew up in the suburbs of NYC and has lived in the city for well over a decade, the whole NYC "return of rock" scene was hyped up to be WAY more popular than it actually was. Because most of the media resides in this city, it was essentially a small group of writers gushing about bands like The Strokes, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc to a larger audience that was somewhat indifferent. Sure, bands like The Strokes and Interpol played arenas in large cities but there were a ton of uncool artists doing bigger business just without as much media coverage. I like the YYY's a lot but, at best, they are a Radio City-level band at this point and the small turnout at their set more than proves that there just isn't the level of interest or nostalgia for this era.

Yep, I totally see that. I still think Post's position on the lineup had at least something to do with when he was booked vs. when his popularity exploded, but I also think Founders has, to date, made an effort to cater at least a little to an older audience - who buys VIP tickets and lots of booze - with some of their booking and billing decisions over the past couple of years (see also: Sunday of 2017). I mean, if we were going strictly by popularity, Post Malone should've headlined that day. That they booked Jack White in that slot with YYYs subbing makes it seem to me that they were trying to say, "Hey, older audience! We're still doing things for you!" Whether or not they continue doing stuff like that given the dramatically diminishing returns in terms of draw for those artists, I dunno.

Definitely - don't forget the corporate audience too. All those luxury suites and cabanas make them some huge revenue, alongside VIP plus and super VIP (or whatever they're calling it now), which sell especially well in the NYC market. NBA, Titos, Red Bull, Topshop, AT&T and some other huge companies bought into it.

can't remember what book it was in, but this reminds me of Chuck Klostermann talking about his time at Spin in the early '00s. He said you could divide the Spin reporters into two categories: the potheads, and the ones who sought out Interpol so they could do cocaine with them.
All the white people who moved to New York in the 00s are legends in their own minds.
Yeah, totally off-GovBall topic, but it was so weird reading Meet Me in the Bathroom and having a time and place you actually lived through mythologized the way it was in that book. I mean, I had some fun at Tiswas sometimes...but it wasn't Nirvana (the place/state of being, not the band).

I thought it was common knowledge that the Stokes and that whole rock revival was mostly journalist driven? It was obvious even back then for someone that wasn't living in the NYC suburbs.

As a 30 something I’m just remembering when GovBall had this big secret reveal of the strokes (the first time they played) and people went nuts for it...I mean I liked them and all but had no idea they were viewed so highly or as influential in any way

Agree with the whole NYC rock revival being blown wayyyy out of proportion. Meet Me in the Bathroom was a fun read but it definitely glorified that scene to be something way more than it really was. I'm in my 30s and I've lived in NYC my whole life......if anything the emo scene was much more popular in the city during that time.

Not from NY, but Taking Back Sunday vs Brand New was a dividing line in my middle school. Most kids I grew up with had no idea who The Strokes or Interpol were.

The emo scene was the BIGGEST thing that most popular media outlets paid minimal attention to. Skate & Surf, Bamboozle did huge numbers and the marquee bands of that era played big rooms across the country/globe. Major media outlets like SPIN initially scoffed but then finally gave in and put the likes of Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance on the cover multiple times.
It might be too obvious, but clue 4 clearly looks like VHS Collection to me, especially with all the NYC references that were replaced on the stock image.

They just played this year, I'm assuming they won't bring em back unless there's a huge jump in their popularity
Clue 5: coordinates lead to a Dream Beach in Jamaica, running along the Green Bay. Didn't call the number on the phone but a Google search shows it's one of those where you get a weird message, like the one on the VHS sleeve from yesterday
