Looking back at 2018 and even though people were down on Janet, it’s still loaded with stuff that’s aged well or I’m still trying to see. I had an awesome time in 2016. Loved the setup. Super easy to navigate and bounce around. ‘17 was pretty stacked too.
Edit: maybe they could have found more success with a two day fest or a cheaper ticket? It’s just a shame they had to compete to the point of taking shots at one another when it seems like both could coexist.

I've enjoyed Panorama and Governors Ball to various degrees but I'm getting to the age (36 in Nov) where trekking to Randalls Island and back SIX TIMES in a 2 month period is just not going to be realistic. I imagine that even people 20 years younger than me feel the same way so I don't honestly think there is enough interest to support 2 general interest music festivals. If Pano scaled back a little and took a Riot Fest or Pitchfork approach then, maybe but the reality was they were competing for talent and Pano really came up short in 2018 in terms of getting big names that drew ticket holders and/or they booked acts that had already played the area multiple times so the demand wasn't there.
I would love to be proven wrong but I think Governors Ball has found its niche and while they might still book a few rock bands due to the guys in Founders enjoying that type of music, I think we're going to see more and more hip-hop/edm and pop, particularly if it's cheaper to book.

That's probably true...although it should be noted that, even before everything that went down, they didn't sell out a single day, this year. I'd be curious to see how the overall sales were relative to past installments, and if there's been any sort of overall trend over the course of the festival's lifespan.

I think Saturday ended up selling out, no? Or at least it was close. Either way, probably the last Gov Ball for me unless they REALLY bring it with their 2020 lineup.
To me i just feel like the lineup needs balance...like i dont care if you book Tyler, .sheck wes, travis scott or anything else high schoolers like just balance it with your tash sultanas florence and gaslight anthem types

I guess the issue is, they did that the past few years, and people didn't show up to those sets in numbers - YYYs drew a fairly small crowd last year, but it was nothing compared to Gaslight Anthem, the crowd for which was just tiny, especially for an act in that opposing headliner slot. And I feel like the lesson Founders is taking from that is that people just aren't interested in those acts, when the more accurate statement would be that a) the typical GovBall crowd isn't interested in those acts, and b) the people who are interested in those acts are staying away because of the typical GovBall crowd.
I mean, look at Mitski - her Summerstage show sold out quickly and there's talk of a second night, while her set at GovBall this past weekend was near-empty.
Changing all of this would take a real concerted effort on their part to shift their identity and reputation, and I just don't know if they're going to be willing to do that given the financial ding it would probably mean.

Mitski playing on a friday afternoon on a day w limited to no other indie/rock acts headlined by Tyler the creator isnt much for me to say push aside those types of acts...YYYs had a decently sized crowd...gaslight although i love them isnt at the level of a coheadliner (theyve never even played a stadium in their hometown) and was going against the biggest act of the weekend....i think theres so many factors that go into crowd size for an act besides just the act itself
So that Gov Ball AMA is still going. A couple interesting bits - they had Lana for a minute but she backed out, and it seems they're taking a real look at making this this 18+ based on Tom's latest comments
Founders did fight for a Make-Up show, and that means The Strokes are OUT for 2020. I think some of you were worried that they were a safe bet for the 10th Anniversary.

It's 6 months between NYE and 2020 GB. Plus Strokes could change half their setlist and include new album songs.

I'd be very impressed if they released their next album at any point in the future but I'd be even more impressed if they actually changed up their setlists and played those new songs.
For some reason, I don't see Tame Impala AND Vampire Weekend playing this so, at this point, figuring it's VW. I'm assuming they also may go for Lana Del Rey since she hasn't played a proper show in the 5 boroughs since T5 in 2017.

I said the same thing on reddit, but I really have a hard time seeing Lana Del Rey as a headliner. Not because she's not big enough (she is), and not because I don't dig NFR (I do). It's just...it would be the mellowest main stage headlining set in GovBall's history. The usual vibe of the main stage headliner is something big and energetic, whether it's hip-hop, rock, or EDM. There's a reason Lana Del Rey was almost entirely drowned out by the Black Keys when she played opposite them in 2015. She's just so chill.
I dunno. I'd probably watch the set and enjoy it, but it'd strike me as just weird, thematically. That said, I could easily see her playing a sundown set or subbing the main.
Also, just putting this out there, but...there is a GovBall 2020 thread. Shouldn't this one be, like, closed, or something, so we can all put this year behind us?
