So now it's no longer a bitch to travel to and from the city?
Still a bitch but at least they have general admission and booze. I actually recommend grabbing an Uber back to Brooklyn/Queens if you have 2-3 people. Probably cost $60-70 total and, splitting it by 2 or 3, not that bad.
Uber has made it very tolerable. Have a couple of beers on the train and then 10-15 minute uber there from Freeport.
If you get a big name or two (nothing revolutionary, just like Kings of Leons/Killers/Florence/SmashingPumpkins/JackWhite) mixed in with your standard mid-tier indie like Chvrches/Haim/Portugal I think you'd be able to sell out a 1-2 day Jones Beach fest. Tons of Long Islanders will just go regardless to tailgate and listen to some tunes.

Back in the day, before festivals were a big thing, I would spend all year anticipating and speculating who would play K Rock's Dysfunctional Family Picnic at Jones Beach. So while I'm skeptical that Alt 923 will bring it back, I would absolutely love it.
Last one they had was in 2004.....lineup was Beastie Boys, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Brand New, Cypress Hill, The Darkness, Taking Back Sunday, New Found Glory and a surprise appearance from Jay Z. Such a fun day.

Don't forget Story Of The Year and Midtown! I actually went to all 8 DFP's (starting in 1997). K-Rock was such a frustrating radio station because even though they billed themselves as an "alternative" station, they focused more on hard rock/nu metal with a sprinkling of stuff like Blink 182, New Found Glory, etc. They flat out ignored a lot of big alternative hits while playing classic rock which, while I wasn't opposed to, was irritating because we already had a classic rock station in the city. This was confirmed to me when I visited relatives in Hartford or DC and listened to Radio 104 or HFS and heard what a broader playlist they had. Also frustrating was that they were under the same ownership as KROQ in LA and had such a conservative playlist.
I still think the biggest DFP was 2002 with Korn, System Of A Down, Incubus, P.O.D, Jimmy Eat World, Hoobastank, The Strokes and New Found Glory. Korn was absolutely huge at the time and that was their only radio station gig.

Ah yes 2002 was awesome! I remember when Korn came on the floor was shaking. I mainly went for NFG, Jimmy Eat World and The Strokes, but walked out being blown away by Incubus. I think 2001 will always be my favorite. Blink 182, Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park and the return of Jane's Addiction. Damn I want this to come back!

STP only played 5 songs at that one and basically stole the show.

When I asked which headliners were playing unopposed, they said The Strokes. But, they also said Gesaffelstein is closing the Honda and only overlapping Tyler for 5 minutes, and that Major Lazer is only overlapping Florence for 10-15 minutes. Sooooo...that would mean Florence and Tyler are also mostly unopposed? Unless I'm missing something.
I'm guessing this means Lil Wayne full conflict with Gesaffelstein?

My guess is that now its Tent v Main Stage and Honda v Barcadi

Is there anything special about Gov Ball that sets it aside from Shaky Knees or any other city fest? I'd like to go one year (mostly cause NYC and I think it's a fairly reliable lineup) , but is it anything other than just another city fest? Are the crowds good or is it very Lollapalooza?

Pretty much on par with the Lollapalooza crowd as it's a general interest music fest with easy accessibility within a large city.

Lolla is much more accessible but Gov Ball has a better crowd imo

It's quiet around here. TOO QUIET.
I think I've settled on skipping Friday. The top two lines do next to nothing for me except for Mitski, and I saw her at Brooklyn Steel in December and can see her again on Saturday of Boston Calling (making the single-day trip up there), if I want to. It's a shame, because I'd really like to see Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, but one non-headlining artist isn't really enough to get me out on the island for the day. Maybe they'll do a late-night show.
Saturday's a definite, and I'm hoping I can make some version of a full day out of Suzi Wu, Dreamers, U.S. Girls, Sunflower Bean, Denzel Curry, King Princess, Lord Huron, Vince Staples, Kacey Musgraves, the 1975, and Florence. I'm sure there are going to be a couple of killer conflicts, there.
On the fence about Sunday. Being able to see the Strokes, Nas, and SZA without a conflict (which is what the AMA seemed to indicate) made the day a lot more attractive, but it's still a little sparse through the undercard, for me. I'll probably cave, because being outside listening to music is better than most things I could be doing. But we'll see.
Bought my ticket earlier this week. First Strokes show back is my biggest selling point, Saturday is dope, and Friday is good enough for me to keep myself busy. I’ll be the guy wearing Miami Heat gear in NYC all weekend like a total a-hole.

Will bazzi play at the same stage as The Strokes? My gf wants to see him and im afraid ill get a shitty spot for the strokes if he ends up at a differrnt stage before the strokes.
this is less about the lineup and more about the fact that this festival has sold out every saturday that I can remember. if saturday doesnt sell out, then they have killed the golden goose

Can't answer your question as im not sure but i feel ya on the pop loving gf thing. I wanna see Janelle Monae at BC and she wants to see 21 pilots up close so thats gonna be a fun argument. Since theyll be playing different stages.

I honestly don't think the Strokes are going to be that packed. I mean, they're playing unopposed, so I could be wrong, but I just wonder if all the hip-hop fans who've been feasting on that undercard all day will want to stick around for '00s-era indie rockers.

They had one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen at any festival at Gov Ball 2016. Granted that day was more indie leaning, but I’m willing to bet that less than half of the crowd gave a shit about Beck subbing (who had a much smaller crowd.

Point taken, but that was three years ago, and rock has only gotten deader in that intervening period. I dunno. Jack White and YYYs were both decidedly not packed last year - admittedly, the Strokes are on a higher popularity level than either of those artists, but it does give me the impression that aughts-era rock ain't the draw it used to be. And I really do think some Strokes fans might not buy in for the day due to the fact that there's literally no one else whose sound meshes with them that day except for Soccer Mommy all the way down on the fifth line.
I think some of it might also depend on whether they put out new material before the festival, and how it's received.
