Not a huge fan of Passion Pit but they are immediately a top 5 for Saturday for me. Of course they will probably play right when Kygo plays, Who was also someone I was anticipating seeing.
I'm officially in for my first Firefly. Just purchased my ticket. Plenty of undercard action for my taste, and excited for Death Cab, Tyler, Passion Pit, and Vampire Weekend.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
Holy cow. Tickets on Stubhub for this are already $150 for the weekend and dropping. Literally half price. Bad bad bad.
Jesus. That is terrible. I like this undercard, but it definitely seems like they spent zero time on the headliners.
They clearly took a wrong step. You can't shorten a festival and think you can also go cheap with the lineup in the same year. People notice when you have a four day festival with Paul McCartney as your Friday headliner and then a few years later you drop a day and Panic at the Disco is in the same spot.

I don’t know how booking works, but you’d think maybe they would really focus on nailing down quality headliners first then work on the undercard. You can have one of the best undercards of the year, but if you don’t have some of the headliners to back it up, then you aren’t going to sell tickets.

Usually they approach headliners about a year in advance. I remember that one dude who went on to work for the Vikings talking about it. I can't remember who it was specifically, but they had one lined up before the current Firefly even happened. I want to say maybe that was Outkast?
It’s amazing how little interest there seems to be in Firefly anymore
Not amazing in that I don’t get it, but amazing in that what started as something so great devolved so much over the course of a few years.
A lot of people say it started going downhill after 2015, but idk. I would move the mark to about 2016. And then 2018 had a decent lineup IMO. Maybe not the best ever, but I was more than satisfied.
This year it’s like the wheels completely fell off. I don’t know what the problem was/is, but I feel like it has to be a combination of demographics and also a misunderstanding on whatever company booked this years lineup’s part as to what people want to see.
I haven’t heard any rumors of a headliner dropping out last minute, but I just can’t for the life of me understand how Panic at the disco are headliners. If they had someone better in that spot, it would fix about 20% of what needs to be fixed.
The undercard, more people than I expect seem to think it’s passable. I think it’s pretty lame. Having been to every single Firefly, I’ve seen a pretty huge chunk of the undercard at Firefly already. I don’t have a problem with seeing a band more than once, but if they haven’t really done anything worth giving a shit about, then I have a problem.
Bands like Awolnation, Andrew Macmahon, X Ambassadors, Young the Giant, Bob Moses, etc. Even the ones that have put out music in the last two years haven’t really put out anything good. I still only hear songs from most of their first albums, some of which are almost 10 years old.
Adding Passion Pit. I can see how some people would be into that, but idk. They cancelled in 2012 because the singer was having some personal issues (fair enough) but then when they came back in 2013 he was sick and apparently couldn’t sing that well, which is when I pretty much lost interest. Not really his fault I guess, but idk. A person can only be disappointed so many times. Add to this the fact that I honestly didn’t even know Passion Pit was still around. I hadn’t really heard people talk about them since Gossamer in like 2012 or 2013.
The problem with so many repeat acts goes into the next problem I have, which is how many great bands that would be perfect for Firefly but haven’t played.
I understand booking artists is complicated, but when your fans have been requesting the same bands for 3-4 years, you would think at some point they would try to get a jump on it and book them early.
Artists like Mac Demarco, the War on Drugs, Future Islands, Kurt Vile, and then bigger acts like LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Arcade Fire (not even going to mention Pearl Jam). (Sidenote, I’m not even really interested in seeing any of those bands anymore. Firefly missed there chance to get them while the iron was hot IMO so now it’s whatever)
So that’s where I’m at on the music end of it. I’m not a fan of Post Malone or Travis Scott, but hey. They’re fucking huge. I can’t argue that.
On the “experience” side of things, it just seems like there isn’t really that much to look forward to.
Part of the problem, and it’s been a growing problem for years, is the amount of underage kids being irresponsible dickheads and douchebags.
I’m not saying people shouldn’t have fun, it’s just that over the last few years it has seemed like the problem is getting worse and worse, where 16-18 year old dude bro’s simply show up to get fucking wrecked and to fuck shit up. The music is secondary for a lot of them it seems like.
Apparently the campgrounds are usually still pretty full during the daytime until about 5-6 from what I’ve heard, because it’s a lot of people who don’t give a shit about the undercard and they just hang out getting fucked up. I’m assuming that’s why they’re adding the beach area in the north hub, as well as performances by more established acts in the campgrounds, so they can try and break up the amount of sitting around and getting black out fucked up people do.
The beach area sounds like a cool idea, but I’m sure it won’t take long to be filled with garbage, piss, vomit, and honestly probably shit.
It’s a demographic problem, it’s partially reflected in the lineup but also just the culture of the festival.
Talking about the culture of the festival, I see they added a “butterfly dome” or some shit, and it just sounds pointless, and honestly not good for a bunch of butterflies to be trapped in something in the heat with a ton of fucked up assholes. I see it being a disaster/butterfly massacre.
It would be equally as dumb but at least have made sense if it was filled with Firefly’s instead, no? Or am I just crazy? Someone on Reddit made the point that it’s probably just for social media basic bitches to take selfies in a fucking tent with a bunch of butterflies. Sounds about right.
It’s just so disappointing that Firefly sank so low so fast. It seems like a nose dive.
On that note, I am still going this year. Not necessarily because I want to (even though I’ve never missed a Firefly), but mostly because my girlfriend has only ever been once (2017) and so she hasn’t seen most of the bands like I have. I’m excited for her and I’m looking forward to sharing those experiences this year.
I hate to be so negative, I’m just being honest with how I see things going. Trends change, what’s popular is always changing, and I accept that. I wouldn’t expect Firefly to book the same lineup of rock bands every year (even though they kind of do lmfao) or have all of my favorite bands because that’s just unrealistic and I’m fine with that.
The biggest problem is simply the fact that Firefly was co-opted into the east coast’s premier underage douchebag gathering where the music is “meh” and the crowd is garbage.
They should change it from Firefly to “the gathering of the juggabros”.
This is the end of my rant, I expect a lot of disagreement and that’s fine. I just hope that despite this being the Internet, we can have a chill discussion on what your (if anyone reads this) opinion is, and why you agree/disagree.
I mean no offense, and I know I sound like a huge douche bag. I guess I am one and I’m sorry for subjecting you all to it. Once I’m at Firefly, I will only put out good vibes and have fun regardless of all the other shit. It’s just that as someone who has been a part of Firefly since year 1, I care about what happens to it. Things change I guess, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. It’s an ever changing roller coaster of ups and downs and I just hope that one day Firefly and I can be on good terms again.

I think most people on here would agree with you, at least with much of what you said. The problem is that if Firefly can fill up the woodlands booking the type of lineup they have this year, they don’t give a shit that the people that went in years past aren’t thrilled. I think it ends up being kind of like that one South Park episode where the mayor grants the permit for that hippie fest thinking it will inject some money into the town. Obviously it ends up that the hippies just destroy the town. In this case, Firefly is banking on the younger demographic supporting the festival, and I think it’s a bad move. Firefly 2015 wasn’t the best attended year they had because of a Travis Scott. It was all the older demo coming for Paul.

I 100% agree with you about selling out. The other headliners that year were Kings of Leon and the Killers, definitely not selling out a festival. The undercard that year was great, but it takes something special to get that many people to all pay for the experience. This just isn’t it, not even close.
It sucks to say but I hope the kids don’t come out. It’s like a catch 22 because they don’t really give a shit about the music, but they’ll pay (well, more likely their parents will pay) just to have a weekend away from Mommy and Daddy so they can do adderall and get shitfaced.
I’m pretty sure the lineup could be a homeless guy giving a calf a blowjob with Sicko Mode playing through an Alexa on a loop and the crowd I’m talking about would still show up. They just don’t care.

I think you have a good point on a big problem with this lineup being the subheadliners...
I don’t know what Firefly gets out of booking bands like AWOL, Walk the Moon, Young the Giant, and Passion Pit anymore. All of their trajectories are downward. I don’t think their bad bands, I like them, but going to see them at Firefly in 2019 would be kind of sad, because it was better when the younger me did it in 2014 when they were buzzing. And 17-22 YO don’t care about them.
Maybe that’s just the fact that we’re living in the post Sirius Alt Nation boom, but there are plenty of exciting new acts to book.
TLDR: Firefly has basically become the guy in his letterman jacket who hangs out by the old high school reminiscing and trying to relive old parties.
I find it funny that no other festival has booked Panic this year. Is that really the best Firefly could do?
It does suck though because I would say my group had previously been loyal firefly attendees. Had a large group of people we would go with that grew from 4 people and 1 campsite in 2013 through last year with atleast 40+ people and 15+ campsites. Pretty much everybody in my group dropped out this year, except for 3 of my friends that live in Delaware and bought presale and figured they might as well still go, but agree the lineup and fest has gone to shit.
For reference, most of my group is in their late 20's or early 30's so it could just be a sign of getting older, but we all still are going to festivals this year, everybody just decided to take their money elsewhere.

Such a fucking awesome way of putting it. Spot on.
You said it so well, I don’t really dislike those bands, it’s just they’re not really moving up. They all peaked IMO, or at least for the time being. Seeing them back in 2012 was awesome, now not so much. They’re just played out.
I feel like for a very short while Firefly was kind of credited for having hot acts before they blew up (Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon, arguably Awolnation, Capital Cities, 21 Pilots) but they like, can’t let that go and move on. While they have since booked some decent acts that got bigger, they rely too heavily on shit that just doesn’t do it for a lot of people anymore.

I’m 26, totally feel you. I don’t think saying we’re getting older justifies it though you know? You’re going to other festivals so obviously you aren’t opposed to new music. It’s just what Firefly brought to the table was a piece of grilled dog shit between two pieces of bread used to soak up Shaq’s Flop sweat at the free throw line.

Single day tickets on sale tomorrow starting at 109+fees. The website says they don't include access to the Campgrounds or Camping Hubs. I wonder if they're doing Camping wristbands again this year...
