Also, Benmont was apparently in a supergroup with Sara Watkins, who will also be at the fort (with I'm With Her): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benmont_Tench
I bet we will have a Pickens' Works Progress Administration after-party. Toad the Wet Sprocket could also get announced, or Glen Phillips could play solo in the museum.

The Watkins Family Hour.
Benmont and Chris Stainton have been two of my favorite "rock pianists" (a lame generic description). Often the contrarian, I must say Friday is shaping up to be terrific day. As I can only do two days this year I am now in a quandary.
Seems like I was hoping too much for some game changers (and by that, I don’t necessarily mean BIG acts... we have plenty of those. Just unique / timely acts). That’s not to say I don’t like MCK and Benmont.
But in Benmont, we get another artist that nobody was asking for but we’re all okay with (and I am too. I love his work in the Heartbreakers and Watkins Family Hour). Nobody is out there super excited for his solo stuff (you can tell by how few streams it has on Spotify). It seems that most of us who are excited are just hoping he does something unique / collaborative at the fest (last year I was really hoping for a Petty-less Heartbreaker’s set... so I guess this is close?)
Where in previous years we would see him booked in actually the unique and timely set (Watkins Family Hour), this year we just get a solo set.
This seems to be the theme of this year’s lineup. We have few uniquely Newport acts booked so far: Bonny Light Horseman, Our Native Daughters, Dawes (kind of), and whatever the Seeger Singalong ends up being. On the other hand - a bunch of touring singer singer songwriters and solo projects. The amount of one-person’s-name acts on the lineup is incredible.
This with about 10 acts to go...
*I don’t want my ramblings to get anyone else down. The fest is still going to be a lot of fun. And I don’t think it’s a bad lineup - just missing some of its usual magic. And every time I make a post like this... I think I somehow channel Jay because he drops a name that I’m super excited about and it makes me feel like an ass - so I’m also hoping my magic powers work again*

Wow!! That's one powerful video they made for Sheryl Crow's Johnny Cash duet 'Redemption Day'. Up there with the video for Hurt. Brilliant job by Sheryl here. She deserves credit for bringing the brilliance of Johnny Cash back into the public eye like this.

"Noname" is an appropriate artist name for what day they're a part of. Figured they'd be rolling out the big guns now, but again, Newport will be Newport.
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Noname to Street Poets Inc.. This grant will be used to bring West African drummers and percussionists from their sister organization Rhythm Arts Alliance into creative collaboration with their poets and mc’s as they develop and record pieces for their annual summer Poetry in Motion van tour of L.A. streets, parks and projects.
Wow that's a big leap for the fest. I'm jealous of everyone that gets to go.
Here's a potentially fun discussion: should Newport Folk be taking such a big leap on the year that's celebrating their sixtieth birthday? I have nothing against including artists from genres outside what's typically expected at Newport, but at some point, they're going to start losing their original fanbase/audience if they keep this up (if they aren't open minded, that is.)

Based on Tank and the Bangas being a hit last year, I think it's a smart booking. I also think Jay and the gang pride themselves on having an open-minded audience.

We'll see how open minded the fans as a whole are if Chance the Rapper is the headliner for Saturday, as opposed to an act that would honor the legacy of the festival.

I think closing with a Pete Seeger tribute set on Sunday is already a big honor to the legacy. Some of the fans might appreciate a different kind of headlining act on Saturday.

I'd be perfectly alright with fans like that walking out and not buying another ticket

Jay tried a comedy act as a headliner a few years back, so I could see a rap artist as a headliner. I'm not quite sure many people would stay though for the entire set.

Fair enough - I'm not trying to start an argument here.
As I said, I'm not against bringing in diversity, but I can already envision the backlash of older fans of the festival who have supported this festival longer than we have - which could absolutely hurt ticket sales in the future. Just thought it would be an interesting topic, since we're veering into new(er) territory for Newport Folk.

I agree. Newport knows the music range their fans like and work to please all the different groups. There are a subset of artists who while technically rap, are actually closer to r&b. I wouldn't put Chance in that class but he's a super positive guy who had been extremely generous to schools in Chicago who's music often has great melody. His songs are liked by non rap fans. He hasn't been announced but if he were announced I'd expect him to put on a set Newport fans would enjoy. We're had a comedy act headline afterall. Most Newport fans love finding new music.
I don’t think that it helps when older “considered folk” artists don’t want to play this festival. What do you want them to do? So far we have the O’my’s and Noname, what percentage of the lineup is that?
I think they can portion some of the lineup to book “open minded” performances.

This festival sells out within an hour every year without releasing the name of a single artist beforehand. They will be fine.

There's also at least 3 other places you can be. Probably more with the pop ups.

Fine. I guess it was a dumb question.
Again, I'm not trying to start any arguments or question the quality of the festival.
While we are on this genre pushing front, I would love to see Francis and the Lights perform. He has done work with Bon Iver and Chance and have loved the video's he has released with them.

I think you represent a portion of Newport fans who will have genuine concerns. Nothing wrong with that. Its a bit of a Dylan goes electric moment. But again. Chance wasn't announced so its a bit mute until he is. These artists are more Newport friendly than one would assume as can see in npr concert videos. I'd be more worried for Chance's reputation playing Newport. Chance fans cry judas after he plays folk 😂

Yes. I think they definitely should be taking these kind of leaps. Noname is really cool. She's hip hop but her style is like spoken word/ jazz. I think if people are scared off or even wose, offended by a booking like this, they need to leave and make room for a more open minded crowd.
