Not a big rap fan in general, or of Chance in particular, although I’d be happy to see him at the fort and I think I’d enjoy seeing him (cause I doubt I’d ever go to one of his concerts otherwise).
All that being said... these unannounced sets are a huge buzzkill. It reminds me of a kid in high school who used to try and sell mystery mix tapes that he curated because he thought everyone would benefit from his taste. I really appreciate the weekends that Jay puts together but I’m not looking to go into the weekend blind. We already buy the tix blind. If he wants to commit to an entire mystery weekend, go for it. Bill it as just that. But there are way too many solid festivals going on now to just accept one that it will be “worth” it.
I get it when the only way to book the band is to keep them unannounced. Like with M&S last year.
But I agree, although for different reasons. About 50% of my enjoyment of a festival comes in the months between when I buy a ticket and the weekend of the fest. Every year, my Spotify most-played artist is an artist playing a fest I attended that year (last year it was Phoebe).
Not to mention, my ability to truly enjoy an artist also hinges on my familiarity with their music. That’s not to say there aren’t bands with whom I was unfamiliar that blew me away upon seeing them play. But I want to be able to sing at the top of my lungs. I want to recall memories of listening to a song at an important moment in my life (outside of the festival). I want to be able to dance along. [Fortunately M&S is a favorite band of mine so I did not have to worry. But if Neil Young ended up unannounced, I would be let down that I didn’t have time to listen to more of his music before he played.]
I don't care for most rap music, but have suggested some rap and otherwise influenced artists, such as Blood Orange. I still own rap cassettes. And I've included hip hop and "turntablism" in my history classes. So whether I like Chance the Rapper doesn't matter. I understand the roots of rap. With the exception of orchestral and wall of sound pop, all music is arguably folk. And arguably audiences should be more involved.
But as we see rock and the older folk musicians who carried the load for so many years diminished at this festival -- I mean, we now have what someone on another site called the "Lowcut Connie slot"? Come on. How weird that the most fun rock'n roll, if you will, bands in a long time, Lowcut, is considered by most of us a one booking wonder; or that the killer blues of Reignwolf has never returned. Or we now have the oldies Arlo/Seeger/Paxton/CSN slot...sometimes. At least there's still good blues, but a group like Snarky Puppy will never play NFF. But a commercial guy like Chance? It would be a big wtf moment.
I think Chance and others would make an interesting set. But anything remotely a headliner, or a surprise main stage act, would be a slap in the face to many. I look forward to "shopping the groceries" during the day, and listen to someone like Chance on a Saturday aftternoon under the tent. But I'm spending a lot of money to have such a radical change without some introduction. I think it would be a huge commercial mistake, and prompt many core audience members to ask why not spend that time and money on more commercial festival. Beck, who has blended rap, would even be controversial in this room. In 1969, when so many rock bands played NJF has been called by George Wein, "the worst four days of his life." If anything, the festival this year is flipping a bit to Nashville and the pay with a tip Cafe Wha. I don't think George would go for it, and I think Jay would be risking everything because frankly, Newport cannot afford the rap acts fans would want to see.
Yeah the show was wild. I’m a big fan. Can’t wait to see what he goes on to do.
You were there too?
Yeah I really enjoyed the album. And his whole gimmick is so out there that I really wanted to see how he pulled it off. He was way more casual up on stage than I expected a man in a frilly bandito mask to be. I felt like at times it seemed like he was still finding his footing, both as a showman and as a performer, but all in all I thought it was great. His covers were killer. I also feel like this was a band I’d see in a David Lynch film come to life. So that’s cool too.

What covers did he do. I think a live show could be the push I need. I haven’t heard an album that I was so unsure of whether or not I liked it in a while. Initially I thought I dug it but as I hear it more it’s a little too “one tone” and “schticky“ I think, but I could see a live show being good.

Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on Joey and Kenneth’s behalf to Stax Music Academy. The funds will be used to provide high quality after school music programming to deserving students from Memphis and the mid south. Donations allow the purchase and repair of instruments as well as allowing us to highlight the students during four major public performances each year.

Awesome addition. Love this band and have been wanting to see them again for a while. My Newport folk fest attendance this year is now up in the air and I may not be able to make it but hoping that things fall through so I can be back to see them (among many others).

Something to brag about and Fancy (Bobbie Gentry)
They let him flex more of a “rock and roll” style that shook things up nicely. I hope he uses a bit more versatility in style In his next album too. I recommend seeing him though if you get the chance (pretty inexpensive—ten bucks last night). His voice was awesome to hear live—it’s booming!
I’m pumped to see the MCKs on Sunday. I was kind of expecting them and glad that I was right. Also, Adia Victoria’s newest album is really something. I hadn’t heard of her but she’s definitely becoming a must-see for me.
New album #WesternStars coming June 14. “This record is a return to my solo recordings featuring character driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements. It's a jewel box of a record." - Bruce

The annual $20 all in ticket sale at livenation starts May 1st and goes until May 7th. The first time I tried this sale I saw Tom Petty a few months before he passed.
Wow, this is an awesome get! People might know him as a founding member of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and he's a great piano player Benmont actually played with Phil at the Capitol Theatre back in March, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see him guest during Phil's set.
interesting booking. probably not my thing but I already have plenty to look forward on friday.
probably a good time to re calibrate expectations across the board, i know people this week were suggesting we still have multiple big names left but i am not so sure...
oh well, lots to see and be excited about, in jay we trust.
If no one takes you up on that offer I can try and sell it for you when I get to gateway. Feel better
I was going to offer it on the facebook event page for free but I just got banned from facebook for 3 days for calling someone a troll, welp. If no one here takes it, just give it to someone at Gateway who is looking for an extra ticket, I know it's a sold out show. I don't want any money for it.
