Also, saw some of Illiterate Light's set last night at First Thursday, they were sounding good. The War and Treaty headlined and absolutely crushed it.
For Friday, I’d probably switch Yola with Adia and have Yola open the Fort Stage. Adia’s goth-sound doesn’t seem to fit as well. And Yola has that incredibly powerful voice that could carry well.
I’d also flip Amy Ray with I’m With Her.
Saturday is much harder to pin down. I’d personally flip a bunch of those acts. Gregory Alan Isakov is like the 4th biggest act on Saturday so I’d move him into playing into Tweedy. I also like Haley, Lucy, and Kevin all on the same stage -> my guess is Kevin Morby closing the Harbor with the other two earlier in the day.
Sunday, I’d move The O’My’s and Nilufer over to the Harbor Stage and swap them for the bluegrass acts. Bluegrass tends to get booked in the Quad if I remember correctly (you need some dancing space!). Plus, it makes sense having that before Trey.

I know I'm living in the past, but does anyone know where I can find a decent recording of Sturgill's set from last year? Is there a site that has concert rips in general? There are a few Newport sets I've been dying to hear again.

They don't have Sturgill's set from last year (though they do have his 2015 set) here but there's a good amount of last year and previous years sets you can listen to and relive the magic.

Bluegrass is almost always on the Harbor. I don't remember the last time a bluegrass artist that didn't involve Chris Thile or Ryan Adams wasn't on the Harbor
I'm gonna play with Saturday because as it stands the morning's a little dead and then it's a shit show from Noname on

Thanks! I was familiar with the NPR series, and they're always great. I was hoping someone had a lead on some of the other ones.
Now that I have that link though... might have to re-visit some old faves to close out the work week...
I was really bummed they stopped letting you download the NPR sets last year. If anyone knows where some rips of those can be found I'd be very appreciative
I assume it’s just a collection of the singles they’ve been releasing over the last few months (including one I see that dropped today). But I can’t find them all together in an EP format on Spotify.

Lonesome Trio, Spirit Family Reunion, Trampled by Turtles, Watkins Family Hour, and Strumbellas (if you can call the last two bluegrass) were on Quad. But you’re right, I forgot Del and Dawg closed Harbour; so it’s more mixed than I remember (although that could also have been the token legacy Harbour stage closer).

There was a way to still download them. I usually grab a few of them when they would put up sets I attended. Let me see if it still works the way I was doing.

I have a feeling Illiterate Light is going to end up putting out a pretty banger debut album and will quickly become a staple festival act for a few years (think Houndmouth, or in some ways Caamp after their performance last year). Their sound is raw but polished- like they’ve been groomed for success already. They’re also working with someone who has had success crafting albums for Jack White, Kings of Leon, and Chris Stapleton.

It takes a bit of searching through the code of the page. I am not sure if you have to actually hit play and get the set you want to download to start streaming but I'd do that just in case. I think it needs to be playing. I'm using Chrome but it may also work in Firefox

And your browser should prompt you with a message of where to save the file.
It just worked for me so let me know if you can get it to work, too.
Thanks! Still wish they just had the convenient little download button like they did for 2017 sets. I've given Fleet Foxes, Wilco, Pinegrove, and Big Thief's sets quite a lot of listening

Yeah, that would be ideal. Part of me wants to go through and grab everything, even ones I didn't attend, considering the nature of the internet and how after a number of years things just get wiped from websites/companies after re-branding or being sold or whatever. So many well-written articles and reviews that get turned to digital dust. Nothing online is permanent and I'd hate to see these drop off at some point.
Let’s move on to Newport Folk, which you guys always have a lot of fun with. Is there anything you can say about this year’s Deer Tick & Friends shows?
All that stuff is still—it comes together so last minute. But, the lineup this year is pretty great. A lot of familiar faces, a lot of people that we haven’t played with before that we’re gonna approach. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.
Any major highlights from the shows in the past couple of years?
Last year, Brandi Carlile played with us out of nowhere. We hadn’t even spoken with her about anything, and she just happened to be there and [Newport Folk Festival producer] Jay Sweet convinced her to get up on stage. I don’t know who—it must have been her idea to do [Radiohead’s] “Creep” but, you know, we all know that song. That’s the kind of stuff that can happen.
Are there frequently impromptu surprises like that, when the band didn’t even know it would happen?
Yeah—yeah the year Jackson Browne sang with us was a surprise. That happened all last minute. You know, if Matt Vasquez end up on stage without his shirt on, knocking stuff over, that’s usually unplanned. [Laughs.]
And this year and going forward, are there any bucket-list people that you would love to join you for one of the Newport shows?
I would love to do something with Patti Smith. I would love to get Dave Grohl to the Newport Folk Festival for the first time.
Noticed that Highwomen chose “She Is The Music” and Alicia Keys was one of a few that formed that not for profit. You’d think they would mention that in the write up.
I’d be perfectly fine, if she wanted to come on down, and check the festival out.

She plays amazing acoustic sets. I think she'd be a great fit for Newport. I follow her on social media and last year I used to mention to merits of playing Newport when she talked about touring. Knowing my luck if she ever does show it'll be a surprise appearance while I'm at a different stage.
Brandi’s post last night on IG talks about the CMA’s (where she performed a unscheduled song with Tanya Tucker.) (Not mentioned in post ) In the post she is talking about her performance with Maren at the CMA’s. At the end it’s tagged with The Highwomen and Tanya Tucker. Could be that Tanya might be joining them. Just a odd pairing of tags.
Hadestown won the Tony for Best Musical tonight and Anaïs Mitchell won Best Score
Newport’s gotta figure out a way to do something with it for next year
Well we do have an unnamed headliner this year, which we know will be a collaboration (like the album was).
Anais - Justin Vernon - Ben Knox Miller - Ani Difranco - The Haden Triplets - etc. etc.
Do any of them have scheduling conflicts that we know of?
Im not sure of the Venus symbols unless it would be to represent Anais + the Haden Triplets (leading the set?) or is some bad attempt at tying into mythology (although Venus is Roman and Hades is Greek).
It could be unannounced to either A) wait for the show to be in peak popularity now that the Tony’s are over, or B) there might be some contractual issue with the show of the same name being on Broadway currently.

Whoa. This would truly be the most exciting booking in my eyes. And would be a much more interesting double booking of Anais than of re-using Sheryl or Brandi.
The Venus symbols make me think it’s unlikely, but I’m definitely going to be hoping for this.
The time has come. Bingo Results are in!!!! First off, nobody got 7 in a row so I have fallen back to who had the most overall. And the winner is:
a tie.
rjgreen88 and TimBobSnow both got 14 correct (or 13 if you don't count Phil Cook.) TimBobSnow got closer to 7 in a row with 5 in one row and oh how lucky we all would have been if Tom Waits and the National had both been included in the lineup.
That being said, TimBobSnow offered to buy the beer for the winner, so in a way the only winner could be rjgreen88. I propose that they have a duel of some sort to figure it out.
The full results are available in the shared Bingo Word Doc I put together earlier. I have updated it to indicate the winning picks. Feel free to let me know if you see any mistakes (as I am sure there are a few.)
My last comment on this is that my service has been completely voluntary and I was not lucky enough to score any aftershow tickets... so if you feel any gratitude towards the effort and have a couple of tickets you are looking to sell... you know the guy. Can't do Thursday but open to Friday, Saturday or Sunday. (I would especially owe someone for tickets to the Cook Brothers show. You might just automatically win Bingo next year. wink wink.)

Haha no duel necessary, congrats rjgreen88! The beer is on me
