Since it’s getting close and I haven’t had or seen a ton of offers I have two extra Deer Tick Fridays for either of the two other nights if anyone is interested.
Schedule really was kind to me. No Kacey vs. Todd Snider which I was fearing. I too noticed how the Harbor isn’t opening things up this year. I’m gonna be sitting there waiting for Yola for a while this year ha.

Quick question: does Newport allow professional audio recording devices of any kind, portable or otherwise? I was debating about getting something like this so I can record some of the sets on Friday and Sunday and share it with everyone: amzn.to/2XHjgZH

I doubt they allow it. I also doubt there is any way they'd find it.
Edit: FWIW, that's a pretty solid little recorder.

I did some quick research on their site and got my answer, unfortunately : "Cameras are permitted but cannot be used to reproduce the event and must not interfere with other fans’ enjoyment of the festival (NO AUDIO CAPTURING IS ALLOWED)"

If you are into recording -- oh, people busking on the streets, friends, ambience -- I recommend the the Zoom H2n. Over $200 without the extra gear, but probably on eBay. This one is fine, too.
BUT -- now you are in "pro-sumer" territory" and using a digital recorder infringes upon an artist's ability to control their material, image, distribution and rights. People don't take away your phone because the quality is not as good, and it is difficult to "police," but it annoys fans and artists alike. I know you mean well. If there is a smaller act, perhaps at the Museum or the Harbor, ask whether they would mind you recording. But its just not right, or legal, to use an audio recorder without prior consent.
Edit: I recall the Lumineers admonishing the audience top put away their phones and enjoy the moment.
Map on website shows Quad stage basically in the same spot as the past, www.newportfolk.org/map.
What is Participation row in the quad? never noticed that before. With that map it looks the same - shade structures allowed along the snow fence, new shade tent in the back. nevermind - NFF just posted a reminder
Outside Folk an odd title for Judy Collins and Rambling Jack, et al. Wonder if there is something being done to the Museum to bring the stage "outside" beyond offering Bose headphones. Wasn't there specific mention of expansion? But the bleed would be huge on to to the Harbor, I guess. Just a thought.

Personally, I have no problem with recording something for your own enjoyment, but looks like it's frowned upon by NFF, which is probably due to them releasing sets with NPR.

I've moved up a few spots so far in the Lyte after show tickets. I'm now 25 for Mavis Staples and 46 for Steal Your Folk. Going to have to make some decisions in the next week or two.

That makes complete sense, thank you! Along those lines, I messaged the Newport Folk Facebook page to check more about their policy and whether they'll be any streaming. This was their response, as we all thought:
"No audio recording allowed of any kind. We livestream select sets, and we will be posting archived set recordings this year as well. THNX for asking."
Good to hear confirmation that they'll be livestreaming select sets, most likely with NPR, and that they'll be archiving set recordings this year as well. Personally, I'd just love to have a copy of the music so I can enjoy and reflect about the festival after it's over - that’s all.
I feel like we were about 2 weeks out last year when we got our first Mumford and Sons leaks, no? Wasn’t it about this time when someone who knew someone dropped the rumor either here or on Reddit? Was it because hotel rooms for them were officially booked?
I recall that David Crosby spoiled his own surprise on Twitter.
Was Leon Bridges ever leaked or was it just obvious from his tour routing?
I don’t recall any info about Prine, Mavis, or James Mercer before the weekend. I seem to remember hearing about Warren a day or two before he popped up.
Obviously once we get to the weekend of the fest, the guests are either seen around town or they spoil it on Instagram/Facebook.

This will be the first time I will be getting to the festival on a friday after 11 am. Unfortunately I cant get to the newport ferry until around 3. Does anyone know what the line is like around that time?

Ferry line or to go in? Both should be light mid day.
I do wish the Highwomen headlined. I figured Phil would but its a big year for female country stars taking back their role in country.
The Highwomen discuss this in a podcast in the rolling stone article below.
According to Shires, her idea to form a female counterpart to the Highwaymen came as an answer to the lack of women being represented in country music.
“I started calling radio stations to ask them to play more ladies,” she tells Warren".
My conspiracy theory is that HighWomen was booked to headline and then Newport was able to put together a legendary female country collaboration (which potentially came in response to HighWomen and an urge from someone like Brandi) and Newport didn’t want two country headliners.

I don’t think that Newport would be like “oh no, we can’t have 2 country headliners” I just think this band has been professionally hyped into space. Reality still is that they don’t have a released tune. Regardless of their message, that doesn’t automatically get ya a headline spot. It’s bizarre that so many are shocked by Lesh headlining. Dude is a legend, and it’s very likely that there will be big guests in that set.
And also...maybe, just maybe, they don’t want Saturdays **rumored** guest appearing on the fort before their own.
Looks like all of the sets at the Quad shifted 10 minutes earlier. I think it works out better for me, get to see more of Crockett after Cooks and more of Phil after the Highwomen

Doesn’t impact my schedule too much, but it’s tragic now that the HighWomen has a significant overlap with Sheryl Crow. I guess she doesn’t play bass in the band as many of us thought?

I think she was in the studio with them and recorded some bass, I was never under the impression she was their actual bass player. Or else she'd be a member of the band. I'd still expect her on stage at some point
Anyone staying at the MOTEL 6? Received a call today canceling my reservation and asking me to move about 20 miles away to one of their cheaper properties. I was livid -- mostly because I had forgotten to cancel that reservation myself because we switched locations. But what if I had no backup? T Anyway, they took my totally mock anger as a no, and emailed a cancellation notice. Feels like I was disinvited to a party I didn't want to attend...with no parting gifts. Anyone else?
Perhaps this means the TBA is the Boston Pops. If anyone is staying at the ridiculously priced Courtyard, see you there.

Same exact experience though I didn't go the faux anger route. (I did consider it, but had them on speaker in the car with my kids listening and couldn't figure out how I would explain my motives to them.) I had made a reservation for just Thursday night when we weren't sure if we wanted to come down for the All Newport's Eve show. Motel 6 called to see if I was willing to move and I just told them I no longer needed it.
I saw that broadway shutdown during the blackout in New York over the weekend however the cast of Hadestown went out on the steet and performed. So cool. Definitely hope to catch Anais Mitchell with Bonny Light Horsemen at Newport. I feel we're lucky to have her on such a pivotal year in her career.
