It's NBD I'm sure I'll be able to walk around the chair zone or whatever, I just wasn't expecting chairs at a festival of this size.
Do people set up shop in certain areas and leave their chairs overnight to "reserve" spaces for the entire weekend? Or is that not allowed? I assume groups use the chairs to make barricades? Or should I say "chairicades"? I'll see myself out.

Chairicades are a thing. You definitely can't leave your stuff overnight, though. And you can only have them in certain zones, theoretically.
So the biggest draws to the festival for my wife were Tame, Billie Eilish, Gambino and The Cure. Well when they placed 3 of those 4 on the same day, the scheduling concerned us. Leading up to this weekend, we would discuss strategy, split / pick our spots to catch at least some of all three. Initially, she was all about getting as close as possible for Billie. That was until the NPR All Songs Considered interview session.
Once again, we arrive around 2PM. We walked up to the Bonus Tracks stage, which was already packed to the gillies. My wife went in to get a good seat, meanwhile I wanted to catch some of Men I Trust, because they were a group I looked into following the lineup drop and enjoyed their smooth sound.
Halfway through, I got a text saying "I left after 10 minutes." I return to find a huge frenzy of fans huddled en masse, listening to this 17 year old speak. My wife was on the outskirts and said that it was so tight in there, this shirtless drunk dude was leaning up against her with his body that she called a 'furnace'. Once Billie appeared, everyone was screaming and talking throughout the session - at one point Billie even said she couldn't hear the interviewer across from her, the crowd was so loud.
Rabid fandom is beyond me in general, this one included. My wife decided to reconsider her original plan of getting close for Billie's set later in the day. Which was fine by me, as it would place us in a better position for getting to Glover. After eating with the group and restocking our water on what was a 97 degree high of a day - reportedly the warmest ACL since 2005 - we witnessed the heated church service of Brittany Howard. Which I found hilarious seeing all the Eilish fans having zero idea or interest in what was happening on stage. Their true religious experience was going to arrive after this. Brittany appeared as a false prophet in their eyes.
Following Preacher Howard's sermon, we did not dig in deeper with the kids. Rather, we walked over to BMI for a relief in the shade of the secular BONES UK, who my wife enjoyed a lot, especially their cover of Bowie's "Afraid of Americans"
After that, we wandered back to the growing cult ready to worship the Nu Goth Pop Messiah. The closest we could even maneuver was right behind the ADA section, perfect for protection. I will say, I understand the attraction of Ms. Eilish. She is a very engaging, intriguing performer and personality, and unlike any of the other pop princesses out now. One whom all the kids that feel like outcasts seem to relate. Even though her short-lived background doesn't quite match up. We stayed for all of her set, slowly backing out to get a head start before the rest of the kids herd over to AmEx.
Walking up as Gary Clark Jr. closes with "Come Together" cover. Get a good spot on the left side, close to the middle divider rail. Surrounded by early 20somethings, not as rabid as the Billie crowd, but a lot of bros being bros. Kids rolling fat blunts and saw an acid tongue or two. When the lights went out, and He appeared on the Disco ball platform by the soundstage, blindsiding everybody, I knew we were in for something. He even said himself, he's going to take us to church, keeping with the day's theme.
The show was made more special when a pit spontaneously widened right behind us. This has happened to me SO MANY TIMES in my decade of festing (and happened AGAIN the following day at IDLES, but that is more expected). I got awesome video of a dude dancing in the pit just before the drop on "This is America" where it collapsed in a wave. Someday I'll post it. Many years from now, probably.
Once again, we start gradually edging ourselves out of the crowd. My wife wanted to see The Cure's encore. Her favorite song of theirs is "Lullaby". Once Gambino ends, we bolt back to the west side of the park, where Cure's stage is blacked out in encore pause phase. The lights come up, and the "Lullaby" notes begin. We were so happy how we could not have timed the majority of the day better - a more acceptable encore that the weak G'n'R one from the previous night. The Tru Goth Pop Messiah Robert Smith seemed in a very chipper mood, moreso than I recall from his 2013 set.
Another wonderfully jam-packed day of a fest.

If i see the first 20-30 minutes or so of Thom Yorke would i still be able to get a good spot for GnR? Or would i be better off seeing 45-an hour of Thom then heading over to GnR since some of their crowd will be heading over to Tame

I think the best way to determine what times to split is by examining the setlists for the two acts, timing out what songs you most want to see. If you don't want to be potentially spoiled and are just looking for a good spot at G'n'R, getting there earlier the better. With those options, I would personally stay for more Thom.
As for the earlier Chair Zone topic - combining with the Talkers topic - they are in full force here. One guy in my group brought a chair this year (cuz we're getting older), and he had another buddy with a chair. My buddy told me that when they were sitting in the chair zone at Gary Clark Jr/waiting for Glover, his buddy got pissed about a group in front of him blocking the sight-line to GCJ, and that all they were doing is talking. He asked them to move out of his way, and it became an argument. I am of the mind that there are no real written rules with festival interaction. Be as kind and considerate as you can be? Yeah absolutely. But probably 35% of those persons you will come across won't - they will be selfish assholes, blocking, sitting, shoving their own paths, without a care. To me, you can ask them to move, but if you really wanna see GCJ, you'd be up into the crowd to see GCJ.
I personally dislike the sitter/blanket-culture way worse, as someone else pointed out, as I can get past chair folk easy most of the time. In fact, there was this one sitter group - no blanket - of about five kids and one dude was literally laying sprawled out legs in the middle of the field for the entire wait time of Tame. It's ridiculous. But no rules - just ignore and move right over and past them.

The people that link their chairs together are the problem. I can step on a blanket and say fuck off if someone gets pissy, it's harder to walk over the chairs.
Chaircade. OMG yes. WTF. Jazzfest is the worst. I swear to God those assholes set up shop the minute the gates open and never leave. We got into it with one woman we started calling the Queen. They set up their 20 X 20 tarp right in front of us and proceeded to spray themselves and us in sunscreen. I don’t use that shit for a reason. I don’t want yours all in my lungs. We asked them to spray elsewhere and Queen got pissy. Then they started eyeing our tiny space because Queen needed more room for her subjects.
You want to chair, blanket, or talk get on the back. Talkers ALL the way in the back. How hard is that?

The show develops as it goes, so it depends on how much you like Thom. It's not like the set stays remotely the same throughout it. It's pretty abstract but did have the Radiohead cover and Atoms For Peace cover (Amok).
We never went into the crowd at GNR, but it looked like although it was packed, it wasn't sardine packed.

Agreed. We didn't trample through too many of the chair sections, but you usually can get around those. Jazz Fest (which is the other fest that utilizes chair sections) mandates more walkways through which makes it easy when dealing with territorial dickheads.

^^^ That's if you immerse yourself in that shit. Otherwise, you can get past them.
The blanket/chair situation was the worse I've seen in the last however many years I've gone. It felt that no one was abiding by the 'no chair zone' and planting their chairs anywhere. For instance, there were a ton of chairs right by the sound booth of the Honda stage where they shouldn't be. And the blankets were swamped everywhere.

It was really a non-issue for us. Maybe it just doesn't bother me since I don't go through those areas for the most part anyway?
National Weather Service has it not as bad, but I'd bring the jeans and hoodies for Friday for this Arctic outbreak.
Friday - 66 with thunderstorms before 1pm then chance of showers. North winds 15-20 with gusts to 25 Friday Night - Mostly cloudy with a low around 48, north wind 10-15 with gusts to 20mph Saturday - Partly Sunny with high of 70 Saturday Night - Mostly cloudy with a low of 55 Sunday - Partly sunny and 82 Sunday night - Partly cloudy and 65
That's hilarious. They can't just switch Third Eye Blind and Lizzo's set times? I guess you'd have the problem of people camping at one stage for Cardi and Lizzo. Plus I guess Third Eye Blind would have to agree to the downgrade. But scheduling wise it seems to make more sense.

Getting your wish as the temperatures are trending down. Friday looks windy and cold now with a high of 56 and falling with15-20 mph winds. For the first cold day of the year, that’s cold for me.

Odd Duck and Terry Black's were fire! Also, not sure how I feel about the weather, but I'm glad we don't have to do four days as hot as today. Looking forward to tomorrow! Something like Cherry Glazerr>King Princess>Kaytranada>Jenny Lewis>Thom Yorke>Take Impala>James Blake Late Night

Terry Black's is good. But going to Lockhart (O.G. Black's, Smitty's, Kreuz Market) is where it's at if you can't do Franklin's. Micklelhwait's is at ACL Fest. And while it's better directly from their food truck, their offerings are still great at the festival.
Odd Duck is on South Lamar near Uchi which is 10-15 blocks SW of the River and then like 10 blocks south of Zilker. For reference, it's between Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Freeway) and I-35.
