Where is Odd Duck? I plan on Terry Blacks today or tomorrow
Terry Black's is good. But going to Lockhart (O.G. Black's, Smitty's, Kreuz Market) is where it's at if you can't do Franklin's. Micklelhwait's is at ACL Fest. And while it's better directly from their food truck, their offerings are still great at the festival.
Odd Duck is on South Lamar near Uchi which is 10-15 blocks SW of the River and then like 10 blocks south of Zilker. For reference, it's between Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Freeway) and I-35.
A couple from Texas that I met at work this week told me to get to Blacks in Lockhart. We are rideshare only this weekend so too expensive to get to Lockhart. Gonna got up Micklewaits truck tomorrow maybe if not will stop by at festival

They get some long lines though obviously not as bad as Franklin's. They had some delicious brisket sandwiches on brioche buns with pickles and onions (vintage texas) on the side. I wanted to eat more, but we were mostly drinking at ACL and ate big meals each day before we went in. Thing with Mickelthwait's, is if you get there early enough, line won't be bad. But you don't want to get stuck in a 2 hour line before ACL.
FWIW, Black's in Lockhart rules. I've been there 5 or 6 times over the years. Kreuz is always my favorite down there because they usually do have smoked prime rib for $18/19 a pound that is as good as any red meat can be. But Black's sometimes wins for sausages and my friend Dan one time got some smoked pork there that was knockout. Whenever you go back and do get a chance to go to Lockhart, the recommendation is to do the pilgrimage and hit all 3 (Kreuz, Smitty's, Black's) and get some samples at each one - and if someone has something special that day that's not always on the menu (smoked pork, turkey or whatever), it's probably worth getting a slice or two of that. Damn, Central Texas BBQ does fucking rule. My mouth is watering thinking about it, and I was just there last week (though Austin so Mickelthwait's at the fest and Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ before).
I’m only going Sunday. After hearing how shitty the crowd was for lizzo I’m considering just wondering in before Robyn to see if I can get a pass for like $20.

Crazy first ACL experience i know this isn’t normal for you all but had to start my day with going to buy pants and a jacket because i really didn’t think it would be as cold but that wind was harsh. GA+ is good for the bathroom but other then that don’t know about the extra $250 still fun time not trying to sound negative to start because I’m actually glad it’s miserable hot which i was really worried about. Got to see Tyler Childers for me not to be a country fan really enjoy a good bit of his music but was awesome live! Moved up for a good spot for The Raconteurs and holy crap glad i got tickets for their show in Nola at The Filmore they brought it!!! Saw some Jenny Lewis which she was really cool. Then a first tad bit of GNR they were good just i wasn’t close enough since we weren’t trying to get too far away from being able to get to Tame. Could here a bit of Thom and see some of him on screen walking to get a spot for Tame really wish i had went over to Thom the more i saw. Btw first time seeing Tame and really really enjoyed especially i know a lot of you all of said but Elephants live was so cool!! Honestly after today since I’m on the gulf coast hoping for Tame as a hangout headliner since we left a little early to beat the crowd. Overall really enjoyed my first day and time at ACL

Also tomorrow is a packed schedule for us! Flora cash> Taylor Bennet> Denzel Curry> Food Break> Brittany Howard> Judah and.the Lion> Gary Clark Jr> 21 Savage> first hour of Childish Gambino> last Part of The Cure
Thom was too fuckin good so i ended up staying for an hour and got to GNR during the end of Estranged. We had such a killer spot on the rail for Raconteurs too, which would've been ideal for Guns but it was worth it to leave behind for that Thom set.
That's hilarious. They can't just switch Third Eye Blind and Lizzo's set times? I guess you'd have the problem of people camping at one stage for Cardi and Lizzo. Plus I guess Third Eye Blind would have to agree to the downgrade. But scheduling wise it seems to make more sense.
Having TEB play a side stage at Lolla '16 was a disaster.
It might have taken me thirty minutes to get through the throng of people.

Good man. Yeah that shit was good. And Comet. Fucking right
First day of First ACL was damn cold but so much fun. Got to the shuttle in Republic square and road in just after gates opened. Walked around and got the lay of the land. Damn was it windy as all get out during the day. Went and grabbed some swag and decided to head over to Beer Hall. My wife doesn’t drink beer but loves Cider. Austin’s Eastcider was having a meet the brewers and free samples. Didn’t meet any brewers as it just seemed like marketing team but the Blood Orange cider tasted like a mimosa.... Damn was it dreamy. Poked around the venders and decided to check out the American Express stage and caught the first 20 minutes of The Aces. Didn’t know who they were but really enjoyed them.
Went to grab some food and check out the first half of Cherry Glazer. They were good and we were second row but couldn’t hear her really at all. Good energy though. Wife got a grill cheese on sourdough with a habanero sauce. Whew a lot of that sauce would light you up! I got a grill cheese with brisket and poblano sauce. Man was it good! We headed over to AE and got a decent spot for Tyler Childers. Love his voice and the down home feel of his country/Americana sound. Very interesting crowd for him as I could see fans of his a mile away and then a group of younguns in football jerseys as fans too. Tyler ended and we sleeked you about 4-5 rows (without being dicks and pushing through) and made it to the rail on the left side facing the stage. We parked our selves there and the Rancontuers were amazing. Jack White is a god and is second only to Dave Grohl in the rock god category. Decided we made it to rail better stay there for GnR. They were epic! Axels voice ain’t what it used to be but he still Has the energy. Running around the stage like he used to. Had like 5 wardrobe changes. My wife said that’s his 5th third of the night and pretty much all of them feature a half naked woman haha. 2 and a half hour set was fantastic but in my mind I expected a harder crowd. More cell phones out taking pics and videos than head banging and not a single crowd surfer!
Anyways shuttles out and walked to P Terry’s for burger and fries on 6th and Congress St. Cheap and good burgers. Hooded over to 6th street and walked around and grabbed some Voodoo Doughnuts before taking Uber back to Airbnb.
Hitting Terry Blacks before going in today. Got Brittany Howard, Judah and the Lion, part of Billie, then Gambino and the last of the Cure. Best thing is the temps should get past 55!

The temperature was quite pleasant during the headliners when the wind died down (additional body warmth from tighter crowds probably helped a bit too). But man, even after buying a hoodie, the afternoon was a doozy, and I froze my ass off during The Raconteurs in particular. I saw someone bring a portable heater in and security allowed it! I walked right by Britt Daniel while getting food before Thom. Speaking of Thom, his production is sick. I'm not entirely sure I can make his own show back home at the end of this month, but I'm definitely going to try.
Tame/GNR seemed like a 50/50 crowd size split. On that note, this was the least packed day of ACL I've ever attended. I know Friday passes weren't sold out, but I also feel like the cold weather deterred a lot of people who have 3-day passes too.
I did a thermal with a t shirt and a hoodie and I was fine all day. There were a few moments walking across the park where the wind cut in, but overall it was fine.
I also ended up splitting GnR and Tame and agree crowd sizes were pretty equal. I think my favorite stage is VRBO, which I guess the ACL equivalent of the Grove at Lolla? I was also going to say something about it being very modest as far as the crowd size goes, but it makes sense that a bunch of people probably no showed because of the weather.
Also cannot wait for the Cure tonight, first time seeing them since 2014.
Could here a bit of Thom and see some of him on screen walking to get a spot for Tame really wish i had went over to Thom the more i saw.
I’m glad you still got to see a piece of that show. It was kind of unique among all the other acts on the lineup. As pirate penguin said, the production is crazy.
Another first timer here and my boyfriend and I really enjoyed Day 1. Took the shuttle from downtown aroun noon and that was fantastically smooth, no waiting. Got through the gates with a really chill security pat down and we headed straight for Mahalia on Honda. For how cold it was and how few people were there she REALLY brought it. Really engaged with the crowd and sounded awesome. Eager to see her grow as a performer. Next we hit up Houses at Miller Lite which was okay. Discovered them from the lineup a month ago or so and they sounded just like their albums but they’re a real lowkey act. Took a moment to scope out the Beer Hall (love it) then migrated to Tito’s for Flamingosis. Now I bought W2 specifically for this guy since I discovered him a couple years ago and didn’t think he’d ever grow big enough to be at one of the big festivals. Not only was I SUPER pleased with his groovy dancey set, the entire crowd seemed really into it. One of my favorite crowds of the day by far. He mostly played straight tracks from his albums with a little mixing here and there. I definitely see a lot of potential in this guy after seeing him live. Reminds me a lot of Girl Talk except less top 40 and more funky. Hoping he ends up on more fest lineups next year. Once he ended we took the chance to checkout the Amex Lounge. Definitely a nice perk with the extra bar, seating and the viewing balcony. We stayed for a bit and watched Jai Wolf from there. Good set, my boyfriend absolutely fell in love with him. Took our time and strolled over to King Princess on Honda. This is my second time seeing her this year (first was Boston Calling) and her set has definitely been polished and improved. Great, great band backing her and she’s got the potential to be a rising star. Didn’t quite understand the random drag queen that kept popping up on stage though, felt really random but surewhynot. After she finished we went to go grab a bit of food. I got the Chicken Karage (can’t remember the name of the place) but it was basically really fancy fried chicken, more than satisfied since it wasn’t just basic chicken strips. Moved to the Beer Hall and caught Kaytranada from inside of there. Once he ended his set we moved to get a nice spot for RL Grime. Last time I saw RL was Coachella ‘16 back in the old Sahara tent and it was one the most dangerously packed crowds I’ve ever been in. This time the crowd levels were much more enjoyable. It was a solid EDM set that I’d expect from him., nothing super special. We dipped out with about 15 mins left in his set to go do the final bathroom/food/beer runs to prepare for Tame Impala. Got a perfect spot to the left of the soundstage and oh man was the crowd fantastic. Good amount of room to dance, no unexpected moshing or loud talkers. I can officially say I’ve seen Tame four times this year now (Pomona, Coachella, Boston Calling) and holy shit has their set evolved from fantastic to transcendent. They really worked out some of the small kinks like the pacing of the set (moving Borderline toward the beginning) and the sound mixing (seems like Elephant was hitting harder than ever.) At the finale KP mentioned that this was their last performance of the year, so I’m hoping that means we finally have the new album incoming by early 2020. After Tame was done we decided to walk back to downtown instead of using the shuttle and that wasn’t bad at all. Definitely a bit of a walk but you’re with the crowd the whole time and the route we took wasn’t boring nor sketchy.
All in all, Day 1 was phenomenal. The cold wasn’t actually that bad since it was coldest in the beginning of the day and only got warmer. Surprised with how much they pack in to the festival grounds since I’m used to bigger fests like Roo and Chella that are similar crowd sizes but 2-3x the land area. I see people mentioning that Friday was pretty light on crowds so I’m interested to see what Sat and Sun will be like and how bad the crowd density really gets here on an average day. Also, I’m not looking forward to a real sunny day at this fest. Even though we didn’t need it since it was cloudy all day, you can tell there really isn’t much shade anywhere. That’d probably be my biggest critique, it’d be great if they could add an area kinda like The Grove at Roo where there’s a bunch of trees, hammocks and art. Excited for Day 2! Ready for Denzel Curry, Megan Thee Stallion, Pink Sweat$ and Kali Uchis. Will probably split The Cure and Gambino.
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide

yeah i could tell that production was great hate i didn’t see all of it honestly
