Would I like this game if I loved Skyrim but hated The Witcher 3?
Just finished chapter 5 Have stayed away for spoiler issues.
Having played Witcher 1 2 and 3 and not being able to finish any of them and done 3 playthroughs of Skyrim, you will love this game. It is everything Skyrin had but 50x more realistic and all the crap you had to overlook in Skyrim is largely fixed here.
Holy shit that was heavy. Once I started to get sick I knew that was it for my character. I went around finishing up all the sidequests I really cared about before finishing the game. I assumed I'd play as a different character once I died, and no surprise I'm now playing as John Marston. Which so far I think is being handled really well. 100 times better than the first Red Dead Redemption. I think the most emotional moment for me ended up being when my horse died on the last mission. I was using the horse the war veteran passed down to me after he died. I really liked that guy and riding his horse was always a nice reminder of him. So when my horse got shot and there was nothing I could do about it because it was part of the game, I got really emotional. I actually stopped shooting and ran over to my horse to see if I could use the horse revival. Then it went over to a cutscene of Arthur saying goodbye to his horse and thanking him for everything. That scene was so much better because that was actually a horse I really cared about. If I had just happened to have been using another horse on that mission, that scene wouldn't have been nearly as emotional.
Just finished. Trying hard not to do heavy spoilers, but it was better than I could have imagined. Saved the file and will come back to it.
I can't bring myself to play as Marston yet. I found myself really disliking him early in the game, and even as he started to change, I am not there yet. I will do the epilogue eventually, but I want to be a bad guy first.
Its more a matter of really getting into Arthur in the end vs hating John. Knowing that John continues to struggle with fatherhood and family in RDR does not help either. Marston is another great story, but I just felt a close connection with Arthur that I cant break and cant put into words too well right now.
I finished with high honor and the ending brought chills. The game did such an incredible job foreshadowing but without being too heavy handed. I knew from the first set of debt collecting missions how this was likely to go down. Even with Micah, you know he is a bad guy and can see where it is headed, but moments when he says he looked up to Arthur and Arthur just insults him humanize him enough. The guy is obviously bad, but you are left wondering how did Dutch get it so wrong? Could you have helped?
In the end, you really do feel that their way of life is dying, and what is replacing it is something altogether sterile and apathetic. Looking back, there are missions I didn't really like when I went through them, but seeing the whole story, I really want to play them again and listen to the dialogue more closely. For such a massive game, there is not much that does not seem to "fit" into the larger narrative once it all comes together.
I don't know if any of you came across the Feral Man, but that was a solid gut punch there. I killed him. And cleaned out the cave. And felt terrible about it after. It was one of the hardest moments for me in the game. I had to stop playing for a bit because I felt like a monster.
It is that kind of unfeeling plunder of the world that permeates the game and makes you sad to see. (Kids in St Denis need to all spend some time in the swamp IMO)
I was actively trying to be good and I feel like the game nudges you that way a bit. I want to see what it is like being bad, and see if it feels different. Holy crap. That was a hell of a game and a story.

For people that got the ultimate edition. Wednesday opens up to people that played October 26, Thursday people who played before october 29 and then Friday is open to everyone who own the game

Is this for sure? I just read somewhere that it's Friday for everyone.
And if it comes online tonight for day one players, what time will that be? I'm off work tomorrow.
Edit: I think that article (from the Verge) was wrong/lazily written.
Downloading the update now. I assume it will go live at 11 CST, as that's when the game did at launch.

I've been playing for a couple of hours. Pretty fun so far. There's a good little tutorial type intro and then I was in a lobby with people. Some hiccups but had a few death match type things. Some cool game modes. Gotta get better at using cover in gun fights now since people are better than the AI enemies and dead eye doesn't really slow time anymore (same with switching weapons).

Fun fact: if you want the ingredient for the Raven Claw Talisman, just go back to the cabin where you meet the guy who gives you the quest re: rock carvings a couple days later. I walked in and looted a couple things including the ingredient that is used to make the talisman. Much, much easier than finding all ten rock carvings which is what you are supposed to do before getting it.
Edit: I only have the one mission showing for chapter two now. Assuming this is the finale mission. I have a few of the trinkets from legendary animals and half the ingredients for most of the bags. I am probably going to grind out some of the bags before I finish up the chapter. I did finish the gunslinger stranger mission which was nice/sad in how it called back to the larger idea that things end badly for people like Arthur.
Lol he looks almost exactly like my guy. I was trying to use Charlie Burns from the proposition as a guide but they didnt have a good facial hair option between that and stubble

I don't know if anyone knows this but I checked the stable and found a free Red Chestnut Arabian. I didn't know we got one so just putting it out there

Thats a PS4 exclusive. You also get a free gun at the fence too.
As an xbox player, I just murdered every animal out there and finally have a bolt action rifle. Bugs are still there but it is a beta. Economy seems pretty fair, especially since the rewards level as you do. Its a lot of fun when you posse up with friends.

Yeah I don't have too many complaints especially it being beta but you do run out of things to do quickly and kinda wish they gave us all the story missions

I know what you mean, but I like how they did it. Basically they are 2 different games that you get in 1 just like GTAV. The economies and play style are too. If anything, I wish they had a coop mode for the story as a separate online mode, but the story is a bit prohibitive for that.
Juxtapose this with the dumpster fire Bethesda created with Fallout, I will take what Rockstar did with RDR2 all day long. Fallout 76 is not a bad game, but it is basically multiplayer Fallout 4. Rockstar would have released them together and if Bethesda would have done that, it would have just as much praise as RDR2 got. You would think Bethesda would have learned from ESO, but I guess not.
Either way, anyone playing on XBox, PM me and we can ride together sometime.
Finally got my Legend of the East satchel last night. Oddly enough, the biggest pain in the ass to get was the perfect boar pelt. I had the hardest time finding a 3 star one and then messed it up a couple times because they run at the slightest inkling of anything which makes it hard to get a clean shot. Given you can get a shot off quick and keep your eyes open, the jaguar and cougar were surprisingly easy because they come right for you at a run as soon as they smell you. The wolf takes patience because they are always in a pack. I was able to see them from a far enough distance that I picked off the 3 star before they even knew I was there. Re: the satchel, the bump in storage is insane even compared to the previous upgrades. It's going to take a while to hit the max on any one item.
My progress has been slow because I can’t get my wanted level down. Most of the map has been revealed though. My favorite pastime is roping people off their horse. Got into a bit of a situation when the logging company asked for my help with a wolf problem. During the hunt I accidentally pointed my weapon at a worker and the whole crew attacked me. I did not fix their wolf problem, but I did kill every worker.
