I switched the setting so "Run" was toggled by just tapping X (once to turn on, once to turn off) instead of tapping X every time to run. It was good for a bit but then I got to Saint Denis where shit is crowded and I kept running into people around corners or by doors so had to turn that off. Loved first going through there to track the Black Belle for an interview in the swampy marsh. My horse started acting weird and I realized there were a bunch of alligators in the water close to us. I love this game.
Would I like this game if I loved Skyrim but hated The Witcher 3?
I haven't played the Witcher but I was obsessed with Skyrim and love this (and the first one). I'm a huge fan of those games and Fallout series so if that means anything then it's worth trying.
I will admit that this game is "slow" and has a big learning curve but I love it. I think there's a lot of complaints from people who are used to games like Assassin's Creed and Horizon Zero Dawn or other open worlds that let you run/climb things super fast meanwhile this came takes a bit more patience and strategy. If you go running into a town without much thought you'll bump into people and cause problems which leads to tough bounty stuff.
But it's a learning game. The more you play, the more you find out since they don't spell everything out for you. There are so many things I learned later on from playing more or reading others comments.

Came across the Klan meeting where the guys set themselves on fire. I killed the leader in the black robe, but first he chastised me for watching "a good man burn" lol.

Played more yesterday than I probably have combined since I got it. As is tradition, I'm still in chapter two because sidequests. Found the treasure associated with the $10 map you buy. Ends up being a little over $1000 you get from it. Have all the camp upgrades now. Done a few upgrades to my horse gear. Next purchases are clothes and weapon upgrades
I had a random encounter where the rival gang jumped out of the woods on me. I ran away because I was heavily outnumbered in the open. After it seemed like the danger disappeared, I eased back. The gang had disappeared but had left a couple riderless horses behind. Rode one into Valentine expecting to sell it. Turns out it had crazy good stats, so it's my new horse now. Thanks O'Driscolls!
Had a Revenant moment with a bear. If it happens to you, it's basically mashing one button to escape then unloading your revolver in the bear's face. Very intense.
Neatest thing I have found that I haven't seen mentioned was the remnants of a suicide cult north of Valentine. It was creepy walking in to, and I was sure someone was going to run out of nowhere and stab me.

I have a decent amount of hours in the game. My save file lists my percentage at 28.4%. I am on chapter two and haven't even made it to the mission that unlocks fishing. This is my video gaming life.
Speaking of which, I read up on the final satchel you make. It carries a stupid amount of stuff, so a significant part of me wants to just go hunt until I get the materials for it.
I got the semi auto shotgun the other day. Oh boy.

Me too! I don't even have the fishing mission available yet. But I'm like 34% because I've been working on challenges and I've got about 75% of my hunting stuff done for camp upgrades and satchels.
I also got killed in the dumbest way possible. I tried to beat a train across a bridge. It folded my horse in half and I kissed a trestle.

Oh yeah. My stamina is also at level 8 50% of the way to level 9. It's as easy as running everywhere you go.
For anyone struggling with hunting, take the Springfield rifle you get early. Put a scope on it. Use dead eye to headshot deer and anything bigger. The hardest part at that point is finding three star deer.

I love this game so much. Almost everything I find or discover either from doing it myself or seeing someone else do it in a clip just blows me away.
There are a few things I'd prefer they add/patch like being able to leave some items back at camp so I don't have to scroll through 8 different sidearms and then regular weapons.
But the random encounters and "can I do this? Oh shit, I can!" Aspect of the game is awesome. I caught a legendary coyote after tracking it for what felt like forever (tip I just found out: stay crouched while tracking the trail or else it will fade away. I kept wondering why it was so annoying.).
I am on chapter 3 but afraid to move on to the next so avoid some story missions. I'm at the second camp where you learn the fishing and other new stuff. I really need to get to Appleseed lumber to get wood for those folks.
now that y'all are probably a little further now...I read an article on forbes, about how the economy in the game was broken mainly by having the rewards you get outpace the cost of things substantially, and it leads to just having a ton of excess money and getting upgrades too fast. the guy seemed to have played from Point A to B without as much meandering/side quests, but I imagine if it's like just in story doing side quests for more money/rewards will lead to the same problem.

Yea I read a tip early on that said don't worry about buying most guns since you'll get them throughout the game during missions. I spend a ton on tonics and health things but never feel like I'm low on funds. Then do one job from a mission and get a lot more money.
running out of money in games and having to do a bunch of small/time consuming things to get enough to get to the next step sucks. so I'd probably enjoy it, but this game is supposed to be hyper realistic and feeling like you've got unlimited money seems counter to that.
i feel like gta was like that in a lot of ways, but they always have the one thing thats just crazy expensive and takes a lot of work to get.

I gave my camp like 800 dollars because I had so much extra money. You get an achievement for giving substantially less. Could have been excessive, Idk.
Biggest ticket items are the horses and somehow my first horse died (I don't remember it lol) but my current horse is legit and he's better than the ones I can buy. Also the White Arabian is easy enough to locate and catch, I've heard.
I don't even know what to really spend my money on.

The camp upgrades in the ledger can take away some money. Got a chicken coop for better stew (dead eye bonus) and need to still get some of the others.

I don't know. I'm sure you get overpaid in missions but I'm always freaking out about bounties and stuff. Crap is expensive.
I really need to not get in a muddy fistfight every time some computer man in town talks trash. But if you run that mouth about how small the deer I killed is, i'll jump off my horse and fight.

if i'm annoying with my small updates tell me to stop cuz i'm not all that good at these games always. last night i went into the town with the chicks in the back of the carriage. did all that and then hunted down the 4 "gunslingers" as a side mission. wow i rode that damn horse all over the place. dude where's my car

Just finished chapter 5 Have stayed away for spoiler issues.
Having played Witcher 1 2 and 3 and not being able to finish any of them and done 3 playthroughs of Skyrim, you will love this game. It is everything Skyrin had but 50x more realistic and all the crap you had to overlook in Skyrim is largely fixed here.

Get the Satchel. Gamechanger early on. For y next playthrough, Ikl get it before doing anything else.
Re the economy, all rockstar games are like this. Story mode is all about accumulating wealth. by mid game, you rarely are concerned with cash. I fully expect the online economy to be significantly more frugal

Enjoy the ride man. hunt between, do stranger missions, etc.
There is a lot of riding in this game.
Also Turkoman horses FTW. Arabians and Fox trotters are great But my Turkoman is leaps and bounds better IMO

If anyone hasn't done it yet, if you go by a group of folks robbing a train, wait till they leave and drive the train and you can open up a large part of the map. If you're into that sort of thing, of course.
Holy shit that was heavy. Once I started to get sick I knew that was it for my character. I went around finishing up all the sidequests I really cared about before finishing the game. I assumed I'd play as a different character once I died, and no surprise I'm now playing as John Marston. Which so far I think is being handled really well. 100 times better than the first Red Dead Redemption. I think the most emotional moment for me ended up being when my horse died on the last mission. I was using the horse the war veteran passed down to me after he died. I really liked that guy and riding his horse was always a nice reminder of him. So when my horse got shot and there was nothing I could do about it because it was part of the game, I got really emotional. I actually stopped shooting and ran over to my horse to see if I could use the horse revival. Then it went over to a cutscene of Arthur saying goodbye to his horse and thanking him for everything. That scene was so much better because that was actually a horse I really cared about. If I had just happened to have been using another horse on that mission, that scene wouldn't have been nearly as emotional.
