I think the prologue is offputting for some because it's a game that is billed as the next level of open world games then you spend the first hour or two on rails. Even after you land at the overlook, I am realizing there's still a few missions to do before everything is really unlocked.

I'm loving it so far. I feel bad that I ended up stabling that enormous horse and not selling it, then getting a tiny little guy because since I didn't have enough money and that's the one you end up naming. Will I be able to go get that huge horse back and name it? I keep stealing peoples horses and bringing them back to camp to stock up. Not sure why, but it seems like it will help somehow.
I also keep accidentally pulling my gun on people that I've just chosen to help so I'm afraid it's killing all of the good will I'm trying to build up. Never really thought about consequences in a game like this before, which is cool.
And I think the first part of the game in the snow has been my favorite thus far.

I'm loving it so far, as well, but I just kind of got done with the prologue stuff. I can see how that's frustrating for some because at times I was thinking "I just kind of want to explore and get my bearings" but I also appreciate fun tutorial missions that explain all the basics while also being a decent mission.
Heard complaints about the health core/survival mechanics stuff. I'm sure I'll tire of it at some point and be annoyed but I want to dig into the full game a bit more to get used to that stuff better.
I also have pulled my gun/shot at times without meaning to. Thankfully haven't killed others but I do love that people in my gang would admonish me or react scared/shocked and tell me to cool it.

Last night I started a stranger quest that has you tracking down various folks. I decided to start with the one up in the mountains where the game began and work on the others when I'm in those areas. Long story short it took me 15 minutes to travel up there and the entire time I felt like it was a situation that I might not survive. My horse was sinking in the snow and sometimes sliding down the cliffs. My character was shaking and I had to constantly keep track of his "cores." All the while, the scenery was fucking magnificent. I saw a lot of it in the prologue but you really get to take it all in when outside of the main story.
That's one of the things the makers set out to do here. To make you feel immersed in the world and give even side missions a sense of epicness and real stakes. You've got to remember to choose the right weapons, to dress properly before heading out of camp, etc. It's not all set up perfect and there are cheats but the attempts at realism are impressive. In most games, when you get a mission like that you just mindlessly ride across the map without a thought. Arrive with an entire arsenal of weapons stored up your ass and blow away about 20 people with little to no challenge.
Yes, some of the mechanics are frustrating. So is the extra time it takes to do everything but it's in service of trying to provide a unique experience. In my opinion, I think they've succeeded there. Haven't really gotten far enough in the story to comment on that but most of the dialogue and interactions so far have been good to great.

Game is bullshit.
I go into Smithfield's saloon late at night. Walk around, take a drink. Then by the stairs I get propositioned by a prostitute and my only options are to Decline or Reject her. I'm a cowboy. Let me fuck! Then, when I decline because I want to be a gentleman she makes fun of me! So I antagonize her and call her an idiot and then a brain dead moron before she gets upset and some guy with a raccoon-skin cap comes up to defend her. She started it!
Having fun so far. When heading back to camp I came across two random O'Driscoll's and ended up killing them, looting them, and tossing their bodies off a cliff. Then I rode a little further up the road and saw a big blood stain on the ground with a severed leg lying in the middle of it. Interesting.

Most unexpected encounter so far was when I rode up on a guy struggling with his horse's shoes. When I greeted the stranger, the horse kicked him and ran off. I went after the horse and brought it back to the owner. Turns out the owner died from the kick. I looted his body. When I went to check the horse's saddlebags, it kicked me. I then shot the horse and looted the saddlebags. I would have fenced the horse but I haven't unlocked that yet. I need to do those missions.

Cinematic mode really helps with the longer horse riding missions. I always liked it in GTA but it's so much harder to drive in GTA with it on than ride the horse in this.
A guy made a passing comment about how my horse bumped his carriage.
Now five men are dead.
I hope they all burn in hell.
I was trying to level up my morality by greeting randos. Generally, people say hi back. One guy responded with "State your business here!". My first response was "Shooting you in the face, bitch." then I remembered I am trying to be good, so I kept going.

I honestly don't even know if I'm doing anything right. I'm 15% through according to the story screen but I haven't robbed anything. Did all the camp missions though for chapter 2
Story progress and total progress are distinct numbers.
Total progress said 17.9% but I feel like I havent done much
Hmm idk maybe opening the map counts for a good chunk of it. There are so many animals to catalog and stranger encounters and upgrades. Some of that may be relevant, some not. In GTA you didn't need all of everything to get to 100%. Like I think you only needed half, 25, of the stunt jumps, but you did need all of the spaceship parts. It could be like that.

Yea I keep doing all the strangers and stuff but I haven't done really anything in town. I bought a horse took a bath and got in three saloon fights one of which turned into a massacre because someone pulled a gun on me

I got worried I had lost my hat for good. But then found out that your horse keeps your hat so if you lose it can just pick it up from there. Lost it after getting into the bar fight at the saloon and being tossed through the window.
I kept getting confused when people were reacting negatively and telling me to get lost or that I had caused enough trouble before I realized that the fight had landed me a $10 bounty so I went to pay that off. Still playing through being as good as possible. Will likely do a new game as an asshole later down the line if I don't get corrupted in this save.
As a non player, reading these comments is hilarious.
edit-someone my husband follows on youtube is buying a 42 inch monitor and getting PS4 just to join you console peasants to play this game. Must be good.

This is quite the video game.
That's the exact stranger encounter I was talking about yesterday just in a different location! Glad to know I didn't screw it up somehow.
Is there a gun range or shooting gallery or something where I can practice with Dead Eye and hopefully max out that meter?
I was wondering the same thing. Not even to max out the Dead Eye. Just to practice shooting mechanics.
So I know this wasn't your priority but I've found that doing random chores around the camp boosts your dead eye meter. The hint also said crafting and hunting would do that as well, among other things.

Officially frustrated with the first big setpiece mission where you liberate your friend in Blackwater.
Tried to take care of the first couple guys with arrows and dead eye. Seems perfectly reasonable and discrete/silent to me. Instead learned I have to kill one of them with a knife and let my buddy kill the other one. I'm still on rails. Go back to next checkpoint, which forces me to watch the same four minute interactive cutscene I just sat through.
Next encounter immediately turns into a shootout, no matter what I do. The controls immediately become a problem. I guess that's why I'm still pretty much in the tutorial. Some really clunky controls in this game.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this game, and I'm sure it picks up somewhat, but it has its issues. This is not a 10/10 game.

The only problems I have had control wise is horse-riding. I am so used to the left trigger being used to brake.

Yeah, I've been doing that too. Fortunately it doesn't do anything to press it.
