I just think we are overestimating the drawing power of Man of the Woods-era, Timberlake at an event like this. I’d almost say Tame is better suited to accommodate their fan base at this point. Kind of reminds me of LCD at Bonnaroo. This lineup (while everyone had a great time) just wasn’t what veterans expect from this festival and plenty skipped out. Would they have been better off getting some time tested electronic acts or bands from JLH? Maybe so. Granted this one seemed more forward thinking than those in years past so that was cool to see.
You're overestimating how much JT being in his Man of the Woods era matters. I get why people don't want JT to headline; I don't particularly get jazzed by the prospect either. For the people who they need to buy the tickets, it doesn't matter very much. JT is still a huge draw.
LCD wasn't a very big draw anywhere that summer; they're a non-headlining act that got bumped to headlining because of the reunion. I loved it and saw them at multiple festivals in 2016; they had the smallest headlining crowd at every single big or medium sized fest they played that summer.
JT, ~1 year removed from an absolute flop of an album is the 109th most streamed artist in the world on Spotify. Tame, fresh off a Coachella headlining performance, in the midst of releasing new music for the first time in almost 4 years, is 315th. Obviously Spotify streams aren't 1:1 with Coachella draw, but that's a huge gap despite pretty unfavorable circumstances for JT and pretty favorable ones for Tame.
It’s not likely that they take a risk in Frank Ocean after a year with two headliner and one sub headliner cancellations. He’s a wildcard. GV sued him for cancelling FYF, forcing him to play two years later.
If it’s Kendrick (with new album) vs Frank, they’re gonna book Kendrick.

I just legitimately can’t see him being the act that pushes this to the sellout point, but fine being wrong. LCD (like Tame) needed a stacked undercard to make it work and the Bonnaroo lineup that year was pretty soft (which some could say for Coach this year). Gambino is just as much to blame, but with headliners like these I would have expected some more proven acts to attract the olds outside of Aphex or whatever.
Edit: and yeah, Spotify is probably a bad reference here, but I see your point

IMO Tame Impala had a bigger crowd than Ariana Grande and W2 did not feel significantly less crowded than the past two years to me.
Speaking as someone who was near the back of both Tame and Ariana - it ain't so, even with the Sunday handicap of people leaving early.
Fair enough. I saw both from about the same spot (about third row of speakers near the middle) and Tame was definitely more crowded there, not sure how it looked in the back.

You're obviously more informed than I am but it doesn't seem likely to me that they'd get the chance to book Frank and pass on it. Kendrick feels way too early to bring back to me.

Wouldn't it be disappointing to see Kendrick AGAIN this early, he was just there in 2017. Only one new album imo shouldn't warrant another return to headline again. Keep him for album run after this one. So two new albums. 2022/2023?
I love Frank and he is basically at the top of my wish list to see, but I think it may actually be cooler to see him at his own concert. Crowds at main stage seem semi dead at a lot of times when its a non edm artist since most people are just casual fans (if even) of the artist on stage.
I feel like Travis with a new album plus Astro plus other features warrants a headlining spot more than Kendrick. I think Travis headlining will piss lots of people here off though
Lol. Number 1 most popular artist still in the world. Drake isn’t good live but he will headline again in the next 5 years. 200K tickets don’t sell themselves.
We’ve only had one repeat headliner in the last five years. Repeats in general are rare these days, and I can’t imagine them going back to Drake after the disaster that was his 2015 set.
We had one this year until the dome arrived. 8* years later so that would mean Drake 2023*

Pissing people off on a message board =\= public opinion
Name recognition. Hit song recognition. Jenner link. Possibility for guests. His visuals on that stage have endless possibility.

I also doubt they take a gamble on Frank Ocean after losing two headliners and one sub this year. Especially since Coachella would probably be his first shows back, and he cancelled fests last time around for production delays. High profile drop outs two years in a row would be pretty awful press.

This saddens me, makes some sense though
Travis would easily get my friend group to go
Gimme 1 of Travis, Kanye, Frank and I will be happy
Well it was on TMZ, but not huge news I guess. People on Reddit new and they told their friends I bet
People obviously know, but it's a lot different than being on the poster and cancelling. I don't think bad press would be the issue as much as it's probably annoying as fuck to have to replace people last second + having to pay the replacements extra to change their schedules.
I mean Kanye and JT didn't technically cancel. How many people outside of these music forums even know that happened?
Anecdotal, but I knew a lot of people who were talking about Kanye and the dome. People who don't attend or care about music festivals. Part of that is because it's Kanye, but it was still news.
There are plenty of people who attend who don't follow forums who might be put off by Solange and Frank Ocean dropping in back to back years, too. I'm not saying he's radioactive, but I doubt he's someone they pursue aggressively.

Goldenvoice sued Frank for canceling FYF? I looked online and couldn’t find anything about this. All lawsuits are public record (perhaps not everything that happens during the lawsuit, but certainly the fact that a lawsuit was filed), so there should be documentation if that’s the case. Care to point me in the right direction?
I imagine they lawyered up to sue and settled discretely if that’s the case I want a proper Frank tour
If they just threatened to sue and then settled there wouldn’t be any public records. But if a lawsuit was filed, even if they quickly settled, there would be public documentation.
For Weekend 1, Tame's crowd thinned out pretty quick. By halfway, at least half of that crowd left already, I'm assuming to get a spot for Cudi. Ariana's crowd was definitely the biggest of the 3 headliners. But compared to the last 2 years, I'd say all 3 headliners of 2019 drew less than all of the 2017 and 2018 headliners.
Kendrick would be too soon. I'd go to his set regardless, but nothing is going to match the DAMN album rollout. Drake is unlikely solo, would it be possible for them to present it as "Young Money" and feature Drake, Wayne, and Nicki? Probably not, but I don't see Drake headlining again.
From a ticket standpoint, if they get Rihanna, it doesn't matter who the other 2 headliners are. I could really see Coldplay, especially if they release a project under Los Unidades.
Anyone else find it weird how low of a draw all the headliners had? Noticed it last year too with Eminem and The Weeknd. I could see them going smaller with headliners in the future and building up the undercard

Beefed up undercard doesn't sell tickets in the numbers they need to move them. If anything, they go to booking multiple smaller headliners on each day. But as long as they can, they're gonna try and ride with 3 headliners who can carry 250K across the finish line.

The headliners didn’t do that this year though, wk 2 didn’t sell out

I agree, "try and ride" referred more to the original trio than what they ended up with.

Honestly, that makes for a better festival in my opinion. But I think they go big on one headliner and small/moderate on two, just to move tickets. And beef up the undercard. Example: Going all in on Rihanna but having a much lighter Chance and VW behind her. Rihanna alone will have it sold out for the casuals, and the line up should be pretty beefy for the rest of us. Only fear is Beyonce-like campers ruining sets again lol.
