I see her 4th
Also there was a discussion whether a sold out Just Like Heaven would lead to a change in the Coachella lineup or just a Just Like Heaven 2020
Well GV did smokin grooves last year and r&b was less this year and there will most likely not be one this year. Same with sold out smokers club. So those niche festivals seem to be independent of anything with Coachella and may be one off moments
I can see Solange showing up on the lineup as a sub again.
It wouldn't shock me, but I could also see them skipping it. Her album had a lot of hype behind it, and it was good but not great. I think they booked her as a sub expecting that she'd take a step up with the album, and instead she stayed basically where she has been (which is a second-line artist but not a sub)

Yeah I dont see them bringing her back as a sub, but somewhere else along the 2nd line. And I dont think she would accept the downgrade.
YYYs would be second line, but not at a sub at this point.
Probably true, I was giving them the Janelle/Solange "not actually a sub but getting a boost" bump. Crazy how long they've taken between albums...those who mourn the death of indie rock should really just blame all of the major artists who took more than 5 years for a followup album. But I think they'd draw well, especially if the crowd is like this year.
I remember a lot of Vampire Weekend headlining discussion and comparisons to Tame Impala, but I don't think anything VW does can compete with that light show. Don't see VW headlining, but stranger things have happened.
Given how much Coachella turned out to embrace the "weird" this year, are Rammstein too far past their prime performance wise to sub? That would be a show that I'd kill to see at Coachella because I'd never pay to see it anywhere else.
Flume seems inevitable. So does Run the Jewels.
I don't see them going all out and giving Halsey or Dua Lipa a sub. Seems like they've had a whole lot of success recently by predicting who the *breakout* pop-star would be. They got Cardi and Billie for nothing compared to what they'd have to do now.
I do think we'll see 50% of the headliners/#2s be female again like the last three years. But the options -- a lot seem like they could be problematic to lock down. Lana sure but she's fallen a bit. Grimes there's so much uncertainty with. FKA Twigs a wild card if anything ever comes out. The XX could easily sub again but unclear if they are working on anything. Missy would be a slam dunk and WAY overdue. Wonder how Kylie's Glasto show will go down...don't think she could sub but would love to see her in the Sahara at some point.
And as for female headliners, don't think they'll fight for Taylor. Ari as a headliner is a line they may have crossed because Kanye fell out, and Taylor is farther in that direction. Adele won't be ready. Rihanna yes if she's ready. Madonna...ehh no.
I can see them tossing Miley an offer IF they don't have a pop star up top. Better yet would be a Mark Ronson sub...just let him parade the guests out.
Also think after this year they are going to prioritize stable and predictable acts. Read: not Frank Ocean.
If we're talking about female DJs, GV has done such a great job booking women in electronic music recently. But since the pool is so small, that shouldn't be too hard to narrow down who might be returning. I had Anna, Nora, Nina, Maya, Amelie, and Charlotte on my mock last year and they all appeared. Helena? Jayda G? Black Madonna returns to do a tent show? Alison Wonderland definitely. Maybe a Yaeji return?
Janelle was a surprise, but I'm pretty sure everyone thought Solange was a sub as soon as she leaked.
I was *this* close to putting Janelle as a sub on my 2019 mock and was told by people that I sent it to early that it would never happen, so I slotted her as a #3 instead. It seemed like the right time and perfect storm for Coachella to "graduate" her to a sub.

RTJ definitely - what do we think, 5th or 6th on their day? They'll have two albums out since they last played; RTJ3 was quality and I'd expect 4 to be the same.
In terms of wanting to keep the headliners/subs 50% female AND have predictability/stability, Taylor seems like a slam dunk. She'd be a huge draw, but it depends on what the plans are between now and 2020. If she has a popular and well-reviewed album, she's totally in play.
Rihanna definitely someone they'd go for; seems like the issue is convincing her to play.
Do we know Adele won't be ready?
Female DJs/electronic acts GV could go after: Helena Hauff, Jayda G, Black Madonna, Marie Davidson, JLin, Octo Octa, Peggy Gou, DJ Heather, VNSSA, Mija, ANNA - there's a lot still out there

Rammstein are like BTS. Too big to ever sub but too niche to headline.
I wonder if Ellie or even Lana hold out for headliner spot in future
They really shouldn't. Ellie's peak was honestly during her 2014 show and her 2016 show was a nice promotion but she already felt like she was fading. And Lana's role as the queen of the hipsters just got wrecked by Billie Eilish. If Lana is offered a sub she should snatch that spot. And I don't think, barring some ginormous album out of nowhere, that Ellie would even be offered a sub anymore. Halsey, Dua Lipa, Billie (she obviously won't repeat) all make way more sense for that Ellie type of slot in 2020.
Regarding female DJs, they'd be stupid to miss on Peggy Gou either closing the Yuma or in a primetime Mojave spot.
Peggy feels like a lock tbh. The Black Madonna trajectory: early Yuma, close the Yuma two years later. May we be so lucky as to get The Black Madonna in Four Tet's spot this year

Before the split was announced, Adele was rumored to be releasing a new album around Christmas time this year. It sounds like that is still the plan. However, I don’t think she likes touring and earlier this year, she applied to have her gig business, Remedy Touring LLP, put into voluntary liquidation. Nevertheless, I believe she is based in LA, so she may be willing to do some one-off shows.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol

If anyone is a lock to play 2020, it's Run the Jewels. End of 2nd line, RTJ was made for night time in the new Sahara. They felt weird on the main in daylight in 2016. They could close the Sahara against a rock/pop act.
Female (and female fronted band) sub options: Miley Cyrus, FKA Twigs, Solange, Halsey, Paramore, YYY, Cardi B, Lana Del Rey, Missy Elliot, Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj (?) I feel like I'm forgetting some big names.
Adele should be ready, no idea why she wouldn't be. If her album comes out on time, she is the best option outside of Rihanna as a headliner. Regardless of gender or genre I think Rihanna and Adele are the two biggest acts they could book in 2020. Especially since Adele isn't going to tour anymore, Coachella should go all out on booking Adele.
Nina Las Vegas (2016) and Elohim (2018) should make returns for female DJs. Elohim is way bigger now than the like 1-2pm Friday Sahara slot she got last time. Same for Nina, but more so Elohim.

There’s no way they risk booking Morrissey, right? Seems like he’d be great to draw in the old heads and the Latinx audience, but I assume he’s too, uh, mercurial for the fest to go for.

RTJ doesn’t strike me as closing Sahara. I don’t know them too well but their sound isn’t like Migos, Post, Cudi, and much further from uzi vert, juice wrld, etc
But they should be back
I wonder if Rocky makes more sense on Main next time he’s back or if he should close Sahara?

Cudi doesn't sound anything like Migos or Post either. I don't think the Sahara even has a specific sound anymore. Out of all the rap acts that played Sahara 2019: Jaden Smith, Juice Wrld, Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, SOBxRBE, Playboi Carti, YG, Gucci Gang.. there isn't a consistent sound there. Carti's set had tons of mosh pits from the last 3-4 songs that I caught. YG was a ghetto dance party. Cudi was a vibe, etc. RTJ is hard hitting, the beats would sound amazing in the Sahara. Most of the bigger songs on RTJ2, and RTJ3 songs like Stay Gold are perfect. We'll see how RTJ4 sounds. Even if they don't close it, I hope they get a night time slot in the Sahara.
