The difference between BLACKPINK on the second line and BTS as a headliner is not so different than having Kacey Musgraves on the third line vs. booking Garth Brooks to headline, or booking Hans Zimmer on the third line vs. John Williams headlining. You get more leeway with risk taking every line you drop on the poster. But they are not going to book K-Pop or country or film orchestral as one of the three headlining acts that, "Coachella is all about the undercard!!!!!" or not, many ticket buyers make their decision on whether there is a big headliner they want to see. And when you veer too far off from the EDM/indie/hip-hop/rock fanbase Coachella has, you're essentially risking losing long time attendees on a whim that you can rope in an entirely new audience to come to the fest for just one year for your marquee headliner.
FKA Twigs is playing at least 1 music festival in the US this year. Gotta imagine she's the best bet for a 2020 sub-headliner.
FKA Twigs as a Coachella sub? Uh...what?
She has less than 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. She’s never played larger than small theaters on a solo tour. Not part of the cultural conversation. Debatable if her voice can hold up live (I’ve never seen her but I’ve heard that the answer is no). And I say all of this as a pretty big fan of her music. But no way is she a sub without some massive increase in popularity.

I mean, I don't really care where she's billed. I edited my post. Though I don't think her path to subbing is that different than Janelle Monae
That 500K is from an album released five years ago though. The number would obviously surge upwards with even just a single. I don't see her as a sub though. Solange/SZA far bigger stars with tons of mainstream recognition, and Janelle got the spot because her live show capabilities are fast approaching God tier consistency, up there with LCD/St. Vincent/Arcade Fire/Sia. She is going to annihilate and earn that spot and everybody at GV knows it whereas Twigs is a notoriously weak performer. Tail end of second line for sure for Twigs though if she gets booked before the album is out as anticipatory billing and/or post release if it's big, and could fall to beginning of third line if album lands softly.
Not sure where the notion that FKA Twigs is a bad performer came from. Saw her at Lollapalooza a few years back and she was mesmerizing. Just a stunning performance where I couldn't look away. Really eager to see her again at Primavera.
With a new album, FKA Twigs is probably at the end of the 2nd line or one of the first couple names on the 3rd. She'd make a great sunset on the Outdoor. Or Mojave closer.

that’s where she is without releasing shit for years. She has a relatively successful album and she’s top 3 on her day easy
Just cus BTS sells out the Rose Bowl doesn't mean Paul's going to book them. He said himself he doesn't book artists purely out of how successful they are. And I think BTS is more like the One Direction/5 Seconds of Summer boy band stuff. Cannot see them playing the fest.
This year they're the first American festival to give Ariana Grande a headlining set, a move people still criticize for being "too pop." They were also the first festival to have a non Jay Z-affiliated headlining set from Beyoncé.
Beyonce or DC have done this festival 4-5 times, mostly with full headlining sets.
This and Wango Tango were 10-11 songs from Ariana, which would be just under an hour.
She was awful at Coachella in 2015 and a lot of friends who saw other shows said she was very shaky, but perhaps she's gotten better since.
I saw her at Coachella 2015 then a few months later at FYF 2015 and the difference between her performance, showmanship, production and overall ability was incredible. Something happened in those few months of her hitting recognition and her live show became quite the spectacle.
Think I'm FINALLY gonna go to this next year but I wanna start planning as far ahead as possible. Just a few questions for people who've travelled from the northeast and stayed in a hotel rather than camped 1. How much should I expect to pay for thursday-monday at a hotel? 2. Which hotels have the easiest shuttle access, how long in advamce should I book? 3. When is the best time to buy flights, and should I fly to LAX or Palm springs?

There's some good information about which shuttles tend to be more/less crowded, how long they take, etc., if you search around on Reddit
Other great thing about flying into San Diego is you can drive over the mountains, which is legitimately stunning and just the perfect way to start the weekend. Flying home for the first year living outside California, I'm almost more excited for the drive than I am for the rest of Thursday.

Dont at all care to wade in on potential billing arguments, but Twigs was really damn good at Pitchfork 2016. Nothing was going to beat Sufjan that year, but I enjoyed her way more than Beach House despite being way less familiar at the time
