You are out of your mind if you think the Jonas Brothers will ever be booked for this festival.
Was also told Ariana wouldn't/couldn't headline Coachella because she was "pop without crossover appeal like Gaga and Beyonce" so I'll take my chances. I feel like a lot of older Coachella goers are glued to a formula that seems to have changed/be changing. A lot of unwritten rules on who would and wouldn't be booked at Coachella are probably not the same.
I don’t want to get caught up in the “Coachella would never book” game, but if you can’t tell the difference between Ariana Grande and the Jonas Brothers that says way more about you than everyone else.
Don't think they'd go as far to make someone like a BTS headline. But they'd have to either close the Outdoor or Sahara. Don't think a 50 minute sub set would be enough. Jonas Brothers are definitely possible, they'd have a huge draw. If they drop an album and it does well, I'd bet they're booked. End of 2nd line/Top of 3rd line act. For some reason I have a strong feeling that Kanye and JT actually headline next year.
BTS are selling out multiple nights at stadiums. If they are booked at Coachella they headline.
Idk, I think there's more that constitutes a headliner besides "they sell out stadiums/arenas". You can say that for a number of bands and artists. I'm not sure if Coachella is ready to full on make an international act a headliner or not. We had huge acts like Balvin who is in the realm of popularity as a BTS and he didn't headline, BLACKPINK was at the end of the 2nd line and I know BTS is bigger than them but still. I'd be all for it if they headlined (I probably wouldn't see their set, but I'd be happy for them and the expansion of acts we're getting). But if I had to guess, I'd say BTS would be booked 3rd on their day and close the Outdoor. Sahara would be too small, although it's perfect atmosphere wise.

Seriously, Ariana Grande is the most talked-about pop act on the planet right now. The Jonas Brothers are a boy band reunion who are gonna cash in purely on nostalgia (feels weird to think about 2008 as "nostalgia", but whatever).

There isn't too much of a difference between Ariana and The Jonas Brothers, in terms of target audience. Ari' is obviously 100x bigger than The Jonas Brothers, which is why I said they'd be a top of the 3rd line act.. but in terms of what type of act they are? What is the reason as to why they wouldn't be booked?

I don't see how booking TBS in 2020 is any different than booking Weezer in 2019 (did a bunch of covers make them exciting?), Rancid in 2016, Bad Religion in 2015, AFI in 2014, etc. etc. Festival has had a long history of booking pretty big punk acts that aren't necessarily exciting or supporting Best New Music, but give the poster a pretty well rounded diversity to it.
And there's very little chance they'd book American Football. I'm a huge AF fan, but they had problems selling out the Ace, they'd cost a lot and play to like 200 people in the Gobi. Think those days of bookings (Swans at midnight in a tent ala 2015) are gone. GV is close with the Kinsella brothers and had Cap'n Jazz at FYF and did AF at the Ace for a reason IMO.
Agree to disagree though, I guess, don't want to side track this with my #EmoTalk, just hoping for something appealing to people over 30.
I was actually thinking Weezer was the best argument for them booking Taking Back Sunday. Difference is, Weezer is still popular with the kids. Taking Back Sunday is anything but. And Rancid, Bad Religion, AFI - none of those require the spot on the poster that Taking Back Sunday would.
I don't think they're going to book American Football either, but it's far more likely than Taking Back Sunday.

Critical appeal is a pretty big one.
Well yeah for a headliner (Ariana) that's a big deal. But The Jonas Brothers would most likely be a 3rd line act so no one is going to go off on Coachella if they booked them around that area. It would be a harmless, really fun set that a lot of people would show up to. Probably a daytime Main slot.
Also would not say that Weezer is still popular with the kids.. although I agree that it's highly unlikely for Taking Back Sunday. American Football on the other hand.. decent chance.
The Jonas Brothers would be a third line act? Take the L.
Yes, they would be. Just because they don't peak your interest doesn't negate how popular they are right now. If they were to be booked, I dont see how they are anything less. Will they be? Who knows but it's definitely not impossible.

With a lot of high-profile guests and Sunday Service popping up for just Weekend Two, I now have a conspiracy theory. I think Coachella/Paul/AEG/whoever asked artists to save big guests for the second weekend. This would create a feeling of hype for weekend two to *ideally* spur ticket sales next year and onward.

Who are the high-profile guests so far? Other than Kanye's Sunday Service?

Will Smith for Jaden Smith, apparently Kanye and 070 Shake for KSG at Kid Cudi and Chance briefly at Gambino and rumored for Sunday Service so far.

I’ve thought they were doing this for awhile tbh. Since Dre was W2 at Ice Cube. I also often wonder if there’s a budget for guests & sets, regardless of weekend. Like, I saw Pusha at Treasure Island and he didn’t have the crack rock or yeti’s. And you didn’t see that kinda stuff 10 years ago. Guests weren’t that common 10 years ago at all. I think some of the budget must be going to the productions.

No they wouldn’t, and let’s never discuss the Jonas Brothers again, this is absurd. It’s not impossible they eventually earn a Coachella slot, but right now it’s patently ridiculous.

Based on what, exactly, is it ridiculous? They'll have a new album out by then. Give reasons.
Until The Jonas Brothers re-brand with the inevitable "since our original fan base is in college now we should make an indie rock record that we can pay off Pitchfork to give us a 7.8 on," we shouldn't be worried about them.
The much more real threat is Justin Bieber's comeback show.

No critical acclaim, no history with Coachella, not female-fronted, never played a prestigious fest anywhere. Like I said, it’s not impossible they eventually do something to merit a spot, but they’re not getting booked in the near future, and they wouldn’t be a third line act if they were.
I too think kct is way off base about the Jonas Brothers, but this part is totally right IMO. Which is why, for example, I actually lol'd at the idea of The Cure headlining Coachella in 2020. Especially with Robert Smith out-and-out saying they're gonna play shows in NYC and LA around Christmas. I'd love it, but it ain't happening. Especially not when you're giving the market a chance to see them right before the lineup drops.
The top lines aren't going to be booked like that anymore. We're going to continue to get awesome stuff mixed in, and the lineup will be deeper than any other in the country (and it won't be particularly close), but we're never getting a 2013 lineup again.
This was the one let down of this year. It was mitigated by a lot of cool dance music being out of the Yuma though - between Four Tet, Aphex, Gesa, and Jon Hopkins, I didn't feel like I had a light weekend of dance music at all. It's just most of it wasn't in the Yuma (was glad to make Deep Dish)

Yeah those guys you mentioned helped a lot. At least get Peggy Gou to close Yuma or play Mojave or something.

Agreed with this. The only way we get anything close to 2013 is if that music suddenly becomes at all popular again, which doesn't seem likely in the next few years. We'll continue to get a sprinkling, and the most we can hope is that those sprinkles become more unique than Father John Misty and War On Drugs playing every two years.

Also wish we could've gotten Nocturnal Sunshine or Âme to close out Saturday instead of Bodzin, but I get why that move was made.

I love both those acts and loved their most recent Coachella sets, but point taken lol. Vampire Weekend should help next year.
