Man, if I needed proof of how much I’ve aged since the Meadows 2017, it’s in how my knees are just screaming bloody murder after all day in that parking lot.
Saw some really great sets today. Future Islands were awesome, as always. Bartees Strange killed it. I think I would’ve enjoyed Rufus du Sol more if I was in an elevated state, but even sober, it wasn’t bad.
Lots of sound issues - not EVERYTHING needs to be mixed with the bass all the way forward, good lord - but not a lot of logistical issues (for me, at least), so that was a plus.
I thought the day ran fairly smoothly. That being said, the VIP area for the Honda stage really needs to be adjusted as you can barely see the fucking stage from the majority of the VIP area. When Rufus Du Sol was on you could maybe see the one drummer who was all the way stage left. I ended up wandering out into the crowd to see them. Also, what is the point of having the second to last act play unopposed? Feel like some counter programming could have done a better job at splitting up the crowd a bit.
Billie Eilish’s show was great, crazy how nuts the fandom is. I like her a lot but cut out during the last few songs since I’m an old man. Hope the bottleneck at the end wasn’t too brutal.

I thought Billiie's show was terrible. We were in the back granted, but the sound was totally muffled and Billie was just bad. I like her music and I gave it every chance, but it just was a bad concert experience, i tried before I threw up my hands and said this is just bad let's go.
Crowd was fine though. Youngish sure but not obnoxiously so.
Tate McRae was surprisingly amazing. Future Islands and PTM delivered as they always do. Rufus was really good despite not playing their biggest song for whatever reason.

It seemed to me like, after they said they had two tracks left, they only played one. Am I right about that? Maybe they just ran out of time.

Reading on Twitter that Billie's sound is awful in the back.
yeah it was bad. they should have set up speakers around the back like osheaga did. I went to her set right after Rufus and it was jarring how much worse the sound was in the back

Tate McRae has genuine star power I think. I also really enjoyed Sasha Alex Sloan though I think she is best suited for Webster Hall/BK Steel vibes.
Glad I got here early to catch Nation Of Language and CHIIILD. Both are great though not surprisingly played to sparse crowds.
Interbloom was fantastic along with the whole show!
I always considered Treat You Better to be there biggest song but maybe just me, it’s always been one of the last 2 songs played for years - but they skipped it and ended 5 min early which was odd. Oh well on to day 2.

I love CHIILD so much just too early to be back in the parking lot. Glad you caught them and that it was great wish it was later.

Man, Rocky only performed for 50-something minutes. That really sucks. I know I’m an Olde and all, but I don’t know how anybody walks away satisfied from a headlining set that doesn’t even last an hour.

That kind of rap gets old after an hour. I saw Travis Scott play at Firefly for 50 minutes, and felt that any longer would have been overkill.
- This will be unpopular opinion but I think Citi Field is actually a better spot than Randalls in terms of logistics and layout. Yes, a parking lot is not as scenic as a field but in terms of getting there, you can take both the LIRR or the 7 train which is super helpful. Also the circle around the stages is much better from a bottleneck standpoint (except for the stairs). - Muna definitely played too early as I think they outdrew A R I Z O N A. Surprised they aren't bigger. - Leon Bridges, Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers can probably do arenas here given the crowds they drew.
- I liked Phoebe Bridgers set but the inexplicable 20 minute tardiness was odd, especially since she was on promise to join Muna earlier in the day.
- As suspected, Big Thief drew a TINY crowd as they are an odd fit for this festival (probably also not helped that they played at the same time as Megan). First time seeing them and thought they put on a great set though they are much better suited for the Mom's and Dad's at Prospect Park Bandshell (where they were initially scheduled to play in 2020 before the pandemic hit)
- Didn't notice the sound issues during Billie Eilish but I was in the VIP area so maybe that allowed me to be closer than most. - I'll see it again, but the Honda/Bacardi stage VIP area needs to swing out a bit more. If people are dropping $200 + for a day, they need to be able to SEE THE WHOLE STAGE (not just 1/3 of it). - I left early both days so not sure what the exit was like. Have to imagine it still was better than the Randalls Island clusterfuck.

I absolutely agree that the Citi Field parking lot has a lot going for it in terms of accessibility, layout, etc. But the one thing Randall's has over Citi Field is that one is a park and one is a parking lot. Standing on concrete for hours SUCKS, and with Randall's, there were places to sit, chill, grab some shade, maybe throw a blanket down at the back of an afternoon set and just vibe with friends, or hang out on the hill by the GovBall stage. Putting in a full festival day in GA at Citi Field felt like a bit of an endurance test in a way that Randall's never has.
It's tough, because Randall's certainly has its issues, especially when it comes to dealing with inclement weather - I mean, I shudder to think how much mud there would have been on Friday after the storms that came through on Thursday, and the parking lot setup would allow for a "evacuate and let the storm pass and then let folks back in" move in the event of bad weather during the festival in a way that Randall's never could. And you're definitely right about the transportation options.
Still, if it were put to a vote, I'd ultimately go with Randall's Island. Hell, I'd even take the Van Cortlandt Park option that was being kicked around for a bit, as much of a pain in the ass as that would be for me to get to from Queens. I just think festivals are so much better enjoyed in parks or on other non-blacktop surfaces.

I saw some videos afterwards and her crowd was MASSIVE. I don't think the organisation thought so many people would show up, perhaps?

I dunno, dawg - you book probably the biggest pop star going as your unopposed headliner, "I didn't think so many people would show up" doesn't really fly.
I don't think the citi field layout is better. Felt incredibly crowded at times and hard to maneuver. I bet it will feel better today with a lower attendance

True, but still. How was her draw compared to other HL'ers? Also the fact that they are on a new field, could be a factor aswell (even though you kinda have to know that the music still has to sound well 100m away from the stage or st).

Yeah Randalls definitely has a nicer vibe but I don't think Governors Ball is really a destination festival like many others are so the majority of people going are either living in NYC or the suburbs. That coupled with the general vibe of this festival (again, stereotyping but just based on my own perception and what others have mentioned) is that this is now a high school/college kid mass party with music in the background. If that's the vibe of the festival, it doesn't make sense for the organizers to have to go through the additional red tape of booking a public park when they can (I assume) have an easier time doing it on private property such as the Citi Field parking lot (at least I...think....that's private property, someone can correct me if I'm wrong).
To the point above, I wonder if Citi Field was a lower overall cost for Founder's and they had to make this pivot due to losing a bunch of money by cancelling the 2020 festival. Also, given that all days sold out, I assume we won't ever see the 18+ rule that was previously made for 2020.

I also wonder about the earlier closing time. Typically, GovBall on Randall's has run until 11, and this year's fest has closed at 10 each night. Is that location-specific?
