Brian Fallon was liking pretty much every NFF post on Instagram this weekend. I'm not sure either he or Gaslight fit perfectly, but I'd love either for next year.
Some other ones, in no particular order: Conor Oberst, Nicole Atkins, Cris Jacobs, James McMurtry, Samantha Fish, Vampire Weekend, Cabinet, Brett Dennen, Hop Along, Margaret Glaspy. I'll second that American Aquarium recommendation from above too. Either they or BJ solo would do well on the bill.

Brian Fallon has played the fest a couple times, I believe.
Fun thought: Each day ends with a headlining revue. Every band on the daily lineup is invited up, in a rotating order, to play a cover and/or their hit song. Artists take this time to make these songs special and join one another on stage (think Yola w/ Dawes). Newport books some sort of interesting house band or MC to help unify the whole event, or a special headlining guest who wraps things up by playing a few of their own songs (like Dolly).
This would help ease FOMO throughout the day (overlapping sets where you want to see both bands playing at the same time). And it would provide a platform for Newport to introduce new bands to bigger audiences.
Planning ahead way in advance to make sure I actually get out there next year, especially with this potential Deer Tick And Friends headline set. So what are the best tips for early booking hotels or airbnbs? I imagine the airbnbs listed now, a year ahead of time, are only a fraction of what will be available, so how do I find the sweet spot of getting a good/reasonable one?

Doing a muppets set on the Quad or Harbor stage with a couple of guests would be fun as hell. I hope we get more fun/unique stuff like that at the festival. I mean.....the family tent is just PERFECT for that kinda thing.
I also would love to see more along the lines of the last minute "Songs for Beginners" set. Pick an album from the past that's either classic or overlook or underrated and bring together a handful of artists to play it from beginning to end. Some folks who are at the festival and others who will come in unannounced. That was really cool even though I didn't know that album as well as I would have liked.

I was thinking about something like this on Monday. I imagined just a set on the longer side with just a ton of the artists from the lineup just jamming and swapping out with others from time to time. Something a bit more continuous/fluid than the typical collars of late where a whole new group is brought out for each song. Something like the grandmas hands set but a bit more jamming and just letting us sit back and see what these musical wonders can create.

I was unfamiliar with many artist announcements in 2019 but ended up liking most of them, so I hope to have the same experience next year. That said, any of the following will be awesome.
Tallest Man - seems likely Bon Iver/some kind of Justin Vernon Fleet Foxes - also seems likely Avett Brothers Tyler Childers Michael Kiwanuka The National Spoon Noah Gunderson
I feel like it's probably too soon for them to come back after headlining in 2017, but it probably just depends when their album's out
Would love to get Robin in solo to play some new songs if the album's not ready yet. And hopefully he can convince Joanna Newsom to also play Newport.
That's a good point. I'm kind of banking on them not being as high on the ticket going forward since that last album was the end of a hiatus and had a lot of anticipation surrounding it. Still not as much of a lock as my original post implied.
No comedy booking this year, they should bring Tim Heidecker in next year.
I would love Tim, but most of his music's not really comedic and idk if Newport's the right vibe for his comedy. I'd be all about them giving him a straight music set on the Museum or Harbor though. I feel like both Tenacious D and Garfunkel and Oates could/will happen at some point. Weird Al is the dream

Yea, I guess his stuff is kind of polarizing. That most recent release of his is a pretty honest and well done break-up record that I think could translate well. Maybe with the right crowd (museum set as suggested could work) his "Too Dumb For Suicide" material could hit.
I don't think it's likely, and agree that D, Garfunkel and Oates, or Al would probably be better fits, especially for a Fort or Quad stage set.
