I feel like they could get away with having him 3rd to last on the Fort or as a Quad closer, depending on who else was playing that day. Could definitely pre-headline but I don't think he'd headline.
He's just getting so popular. Selling out the Anthem almost 4 months in advance (if you believe the low ticket warning) is pretty impressive.
Wow, really? I was very curious how he would sell some of these bigger rooms on the winter tour (Anthem specifically) outside of that WV/KY area. I didn't see that low ticket warning, but apparently he's doing just fine.

Yeah I didn't realize that either. I know he's popular but I feel like I just don't see or hear anyone talking about him all that much so I don't have a great gauge.
Still don't think he'd headline just because it feels like Newport's headliners these days are a) unannounced collabs b) "living legends" c) artists with history at NFF
If Sturgill and Hozier weren't headliners, I'd say Childers won't be either.
This Bon Iver album is fantastic! Still waiting for a proper set from him at Newport...
It's very early to say for certain, but it might be my favorite of his, which is saying a lot considering his previous albums. A set from that crew at Newport would be a beautiful thing
PS. It’s not just a knock on the Highwomen, but it speaks down on Our Native Daughters, the Collaboration set, and Sheryl Crow’s guest performances.
Holy shit. I mean, look, I get wanting to knock the Highwomen, since it's kind of what everybody's talking about, and this guy does a recurring "The Curmudgeon" thing. I mean, I don't agree, but I get it.
But how anyone could have walked out of that Our Native Daughters set and not felt they just witnessed an incredibly special musical moment is beyond me. A loss of individuality in the songwriting? Yeah, "Moon Meets the Sun," "Polly Ann's Hammer," and "Quasheba, Quasheba" sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Ugh. I'll be back as soon as I'm done throwing up, which may be never.
fyi JV offered to play a Shouting Matches set at this year's NFF and was told "no thanks". So maybe put a pin in any Bon Iver 2020 talks.
Speaking of pins, the NFF threads get more pages than Hangout, Gov Ball, etc., so this thread should be pinned.
I find that extremely hard to believe. Maybe jay is holding out for a proper bon iver set.
Second this.
I don’t see Jay passing on a super unique Justin Vernon set unless the asking price was too high (for a band most people don’t know anything about). Plus, have Shouting Matches been a band since 2013? Have they played any Eaux Claire or Homecoming fests in the interim?
That said, Shouting Matches would be a more appropriate booking for Newport than Bon Iver in 2019. And a good way to cut the price of the booking down probably fairly significantly (I assume a typical Bon Iver set probably has a lot of personnel involved; as for Shouting Matches, we know Phil will already be hanging around...)

Great to see that someone else sees HER fitting in nicely at this fest. That’d be a great booking. But if they drag their feet...they’ll miss out...she’s only going to continue to rise.

Faye Webster and Orville Peck seem like slam dunks as well. Although, they both would probably have fit better this year given album cycles; let’s just hope Newport Folk seeded the idea.

Have The New Pornographers ever played this fest? I know Neko Case has played before, so there's a connection already if the whole band hasn't played yet. I really loved Whiteout Conditions and the single they put out a couple weeks ago.

Peck absolutely! I’ll look into the former.
Woah, this might be the first time I have heard of an artist that Beaker hasn’t.
IMO one of the most interesting bands in indie/folk rock now. Adrienne is an artist working at the top of her game and they just keep firing off incredible music. Really hoping Newport brings 'em back. Preferably just for a later set on the quad
New Highwomen song is out - will admit, this has nothing on the live version we heard at the Fort
Seems to be a running theme with these releases. While I did dig the first two singles released more than others on here it sounds like in general all these songs were way more impressive live than on record. Still looking forward to the album

Hot take: Dave Cobb is actually a fairly boring producer and all his records are starting to sound the same

It was delivered as a powerful introduction to the band when played live at Newport. It was loud. It was full of excitement.
Instead, on record, it’s a softer, thought provoking tribute to the Highwaymen’s original song. The instruments are almost lost, with the exception of an occasional fiddle. The lyrics are never delivered in a “listen to me now” manner like they were live.
i dunno, i posted about it over in 2019, this recording flooredd and i listened to it four times as soon as it was released.
EDIT: posted this over in the 2019 thread, ill stop doing that:
if there are any still on the fence about the highwomen after this one, i am not sure what to tell you.
so glad yola is on the track, her verse gives chills. the moment where all the voices join in about 2 1/2 minutes in takes me right back to the fort. i literally listened to it 4 times in row the second it was posted.

I think it’s still a great song with potent lyrics and beautiful harmonies. I’m still excited for the album.
But I do wonder if it’s a Dave Cobb thing. It’s just subdued compared to what we heard live. Like he wanted it to be a more solemn take on the song. And with the first 3 singles, they all error in this direction of being just a little too quiet/reflective. Like Dave wanted the women in the group to each shine, so he turned down the instrumental volume, and made sure nobody was overpowering anyone else (even though I yearn for a Brandi or a Maren belt). The Chain is the one song where all 4 singers and the instrumentals are let loose, and shows you what could have been.

for me it feels more like a burning slow roller, appropos for an album opener. i agree i wish it could capture the energy when they first sang it in the quad but i guess id like to think that nigh impossible and keep the memory in my pocket for myself.
