Mayor had a press conference today about reopening. Didn't take too many notes but it certainly seems like this is all but confirmed to happen at the end of July.
Its going to be interesting how they handle the 15 people per 1,000 sq ft for outdoor festivals. But its a good sign that theyre moving forward. Now they need to say if herd immunity happens then everything is cool and give an estimate. But have to encourage vaccinations cause a lot of people will just sit back and wait for them to announce that and not get the shot.
"Everyone must have proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 3 Days."
Curious to see if Lollapalooza will be doing the same.
Chicago also just unveiled a plan that vaccinated people dont count against the capacity limits for private events like weddings. Pretty smart rule IMO

Seems like they wanna be as vague as possible with that part of the guidance so a lot of things can skirt the rules. Apparently Lightfoot was asked about Lolla etc and punted a bit with the answer then smiled.

I'm sure she wanted to let the festival make the announcement and not have it come from the mayor. The smirk on her face though said a lot lol
If you go back to the presser a few days ago, the city's top doc had a similar knowing smirk when asked about Lolla.
Supre's joking but Lightfoot knows Chicago had a huge shortfall in taxes last year. A lot of that revenue comes from hospitality related taxes on hotels and events, and the Loop itself has been pretty comatose during the pandemic. Getting big events like Lollapalooza back in the city will help bring in revenue and foster some sense of a return to normalcy for the city in general -- all of which helps refill the coffers, keep businesses happy, and potentially buoy her image as Mayor (which is in rough shape at the moment).
Just watched the Mayor's presser. If you can listen to Lori's answer about Lolla (and Pitchfork), account for all the other announcements and notes about reopening this week, and think that if things stay on this course Lolla isn't happening, I don't know what to tell you.
Barring a major setback, this is happening. They were clear that they've been evaluating restrictions in 2-week cycles, so while I'd love tickets to go up next week, I'd anticipate we're probably one more cycle away if this isn't merely a case of the city allowing fests to rollout on their own.
So if the city sticks to announcing changes late in the week and Lolla wants to do their normal cadence, that probably means an announcement from the city the week of May 10th and tickets dropping for Lolla the week of May 17th.
That said, all of this is anything but typical and the Mayor seemed to relish the opportunity to announce the United Center and the Windy City Smokeout -- so I wouldn't be surprised if they do a joint announcement during the week of May 10th, and put tickets on sale shortly after. This also lines up neatly with that Riot Fest note about being able to say more in "early May".
I just can't foresee them going an additional cycle beyond that, as it would push ticket sales to early June and give them less than 2 months lead time (and we've seen no evidence of alternate dates).

It feels ambitious but I don't think that top line is as expensive as we think it is. Especially with acts like Journey 5-8 they could probably afford it.

In a year without Coachella they have a chance to be the first major festival and the biggest sets. We will see if they can actually book them or not but the opportunity is there for a big year.
When they made the announcement they said they will follow the city guidelines so if things change so will their requirements. Lori said today it is possible we wont be needing to wear masks and will be a voluntary thing possibly by July 4th as well. So its possible things could still change.
