Modest Mouse description for their new album on Target.com seems to confirm Lollapalooza this year. Since this was captured the description has been changed to "Modest Mouse are confirmed for US tour dates in the fall of 2021”
Mayor about to start an event on the stage of the Goodman Theater. Had a live band open up for her. Curious to see if this leads to more news about music venues and festivals.
EDIT: Goodman to resume in-person live productions in August from the sound of this intro.
Sounds like today's press conference is very focused on local events, but here are some interesting notes:
Goodman Theater reopening to the public in August, resuming the show that closed at the start of the pandemic.
Millennium Park Summer Concert series kicks off in August. Over 40 events at the Pritzker Pavilion.
Grant Park Music festival returning, and hosting a July 2nd event (at Pritzker) in celebration of Independence Day
Some fairly vague new citywide festival "Chicago In-Tune" celebrating the vast array of Chicago music.
All very positive signs for Lolla (and potentially aftershows), though it seems like we're not getting any announcements about major weekend fests today.
I know it's tradition to roll our eyes at The Killers getting booked, but that last album was suprisingly great and they just finished another, so I would be super down for that.
Don't think we should expect the usual cadence this year. I get the sense that the Mayor's Office wants to be closely tied into the rollout of these big "return to normal moments, for both businesses and the residents of the city.
Chicago updates their guidance based on the latest data every 2 weeks, so we could be looking at some joint announcements between the city and major festivals this Thurs/Fri if they keep the same general timing. No idea how that would track with Riot, Pitchfork and Lolla putting tickets on sale (i.e. if their on-sales are going to be bunched up), but it would give Lolla the weekend and a day or two on either end to build awareness and hype (and maybe revive some limited early bird pre-sale -- though that's probably wishful thinking) before tickets and the line-up drop.
Lolla is first this time and the other 2 have sold some tickets already anyway. I dont think the sales are going to be too much of an issue rather than actually announcing. It would suck if theyre really being dependent on city hall and not their own schedule. Give everyone the info they are waiting for, this doesnt need to be a huge ass deal. Like is the Pope visiting the city or something?
It's getting a little ridiculous at this point. Other city festivals have announced and are selling tickets. Lolla and Pitchfork should go for it and announce.

well lolla will probably be the first festival so I get why they are in a holding pattern. seems very clear to me they are keeping their date

Technically the Windy City Smokeout Country festival at the United Center parking lot will be the first big fest in the city and they did a big announcement with the Mayor a few weeks ago.

Windy City Smokeout will be capped at 12,500 people per day. Lolla is much, much larger.

None of them have approved permits yet. They are holding large scale events on city property, in a city that has historically not been shy about asserting itself. EDC tried to power past the city approval process in, and look how that worked out.
Lollapalooza impacts the downtown in a major way for several weeks. It also requires a lot of dedicated city resources and transit systems to support. Additionally, I believe the festival is in the last year of a 10 year agreement with the city, and probably not trying to step on any toes. I get that we're all impatient, want to see a line-up, and cement plans, but so far Chicago seems to be on the right track here and if all goes well this will be the first major US festival back. It'll be big news when it happens.
In the meantime, we can see the signals, know the dates and are free to take advantage of the cheap hotels/airbnbs before the rest of the world gets the news (likely sooner than later).

I mean the first large scale festival in the country
