I haven’t consumed any of his content but everyone I know who likes him is into qanon still
he's kinda leaned into the Joe Rogan/anti-librul LA vibe since covid unfortunately. I used to follow Theo pretty regularly after seeing him do a set back in 2014 or so...just an oddball comedian that was kinda refreshing and dumb with crazy stories. i even met him when i was visiting New Orleans back in 2018 (literally ran into him at a coffee shop) and he was a down to earth chill guy who was happy to take a pic. anyway, all this to say i've had a harder time stomaching him in the last couple years, and i know he says off the wall stuff cuz it's funny, but i can't help but see some (maybe internalized) homophobia coming from him sometimes.
So is it the consensus amongst the majority of y'all that you think comedians in general are anti-liberal? You reference it as like the Joe Rogan crowd, but a huge portion of comedians all hang out and frequent his show (Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Louis CK, Bert Kreischer, Tom Segura, Ari Shaffir, Shane Gillis, Theo Von, Joey Diaz, Andrew Schulz, Russell Brand, Mark Normand, Dave Attell, etc.).
Are they really anti anything or are they just comedians? Are all jokes involving trans people transphobic or can they be jokes? I say that because some of you are saying Theo says some homophobic or transphobic stuff but you're almost certainly referring to jokes he's made. And to that point, should we stop telling jokes that involve the LGBTQ community unless they're told by someone in that community?

I can't find the specific clip I was thinking of but it wasn't part of a stand up routine or podcast so it wasn't like a real joke for an audience or anything. It was something transphobic on some clip from someone's social media where they were making some transphobic comments, I think at a UFC/MMA event. Can't dig it up now. But again, I feel like he seems like he goes along/laughs with others even if he's not fully transphobic himself. There just were definitely some things I saw on twitter or tiktok randomly where his comments or others he was hanging with made me go "Oh...that's unfortunate...I thought they weren't like that".
Nobody is attacking stand-up or "people telling jokes" so not sure where that's coming from.

I'm just curious people's opinions on it because there are some instances in this thread where a comedian was "cancelled" for jokes. But beyond that, I'd like to be more informed on what y'all think should or shouldn't be something joked about.

Okay, I actually did find the clip and I gotta admit that even though he responds to the total douchebag Adin Ross's question that he believes there are only 2 genders he does at least toss in that he may be open to see what's possible though. So again, this feels to me like he just kind of agrees with or says what whoever he's around wants to hear. Adin put him on the spot like other gender critical numbskulls but Theo played along (or truly believes?). So that clip is less outright transphobic and more wishy washy. Still turned me off seeing him hanging with Adin and agreeing about 2 genders.
He comes across like he doesn't want to step on anyone's toes or disagree/cause a conflict. But I admit to not watching all the hours of podcasting and stand-up he puts out so my sample size is limited.

I think bill burr is the only guy on that list I really care about at this point.
Up until a couple years ago, he was always that guy from Real World Road Rules: The Challenge to me
Wait. That's Theo from the challenge? Holy fuck.
lol I always think back to him being on those shows too. He and The Miz both made it relatively big in the entertainment industry after Real World/Road Rules stuff. Are there other people who have stuck around that I'm not aware of? I know the lead guy from the Grimm tv show a few years ago started on Road rules but I never saw him on there.

Can you tell a joke about trans folks in a way that’s not punching down? Sure! Can most of those guys pull it off? No. Are most of them even trying? Also no.

I think when you have a podcast and talk for hours at a time, you're going to have the opportunity to show your real self. I'm not referring to written standup material with Theo and why i've grown away from him. Most comedians have podcasts now, and they talk for hours a week on them. It's a fine needle to thread- being funny and keeping up a persona, while also eeking out more and more of your true self.

Tom Segura is excellent. I'm not aware of him doing anything controversial. I mean he's blue but he doesn't do LGBT jokes or anything like that.
I'm kind of new to Schulz, I watched the first 20 minutes or so of his YouTube special and he is really really good. Shockingly good, super duper precise. I watched him on Neal Brennan's podcast and he strikes me as a total New York bro who is also frustratingly balanced and enlightened. I expect my stand-ups to be all fucked up in the head but he seems totally even Steven. But again I don't know a ton about him, just my initial impressions.
Burr is the goat of course. Took me forever to watch Paper Tiger, special was unbelievable. He's also smart and has softened a lot as he's aged in a good way.
I feel like it’s pretty obvious when a comedian crosses a line with a joke. I think some of the comedians you mentioned like Mark Normand are a little more tactful with making jokes about subjects like LGBTQ rights than others. I also think if you combat the idea of their being valid criticisms of your jokes it’s really lame.
Doesn’t help that right now as a comedian you can just say something controversial, say “people can’t take a joke anymore” and then go on a tour titled something like “No snowflakes allowed” and make millions

Sean Duffy was an awful member of Congress as well. He retired got a job on CNN and was fired I think.

Dont forget about Rachels husband Sean who was in congress for multiple terms. It was interesting watching real world boston and essentially him just being a harmless dude that was really conservative af and nobody knew the wiser til afterwards. Except he was fine giving those kids booze!
Sean left his last gig cause of his youngest child that had health issues and wanted to focus on his family. Or so he says. Now rachel is just the hate mouthpiece.
I feel like this take is gonna get me canceled so it's going here.
I always feel a little bit icky when the conversation around sexual assault focuses purely on male perpetrators, simply because I was sexually assaulted by a woman.
I understand that men are the majority of perpetrators but I always feel marginalized when people go "UGH MEN" in those conversations because it's not just men.

I’m sorry you had to suffer through that. You definitely aren’t alone in this. I don’t know the “severity” of your assault, but I’ve had a few encounters in my life where in hindsight I felt taken advantage of to the point where if the tables were turned it could very easily be viewed as assault.
About 6-7 years ago, there was a woman who I had gone on a few dates with and slept with twice. I decided that we weren’t going to work out so I explicitly ended things with her. We were in the same general circle of friends so I was around her often, but I maintained a clear boundary with her. At a party one night, I got black out drunk (it was during a dark period of time after my divorce where I got black out drunk too often) and she ended up being the DD for me and two other friends. I remember getting in the car with the three of them. Next thing I know, I’m waking up in a strange house. She had taken me to her home instead of mine and slept with me that night. It was super awkward for me and I couldn’t leave because I had no car.
Another time, in college, I came home from the bar drunk. My roommate’s female cousin and sister were staying the weekend with us, but I had been hanging out with other people. I went straight to my bed as I was about to pass out. His cousin followed me and came into my room and got in my bed without my permission. I was not interested in her, most importantly because it was my friends cousin and he had explicitly said he felt uncomfortable with friends hitting on his family. I told her if she needed a bed she could have mine and that I’d sleep on the couch. She aggressively tried to get me to stay with her. I attempted to leave multiple times but eventually decided it was easier to just let it happen than to keep arguing.
These stories are very tame compared to what I consider to be assault, but I think it speaks to a bigger problem in our society that just assumes any time a woman is sexually aggressive to someone that it’s always a good thing and to be thankful.
None of this is to diminish the systematic abuses men have brought towards others in our society, whether by intimidation, inequitable power dynamics, etc. But I guess I’m just saying that you’re not alone

Angela Trimbur is in stuff. She was on Road Rules and the Challenge. Also remember her being on Entourage.

So what did Disney and Marvel and other studios know, because it seems basically impossible to me that they didn't know anything. I guess they mostly know all of this stuff and just don't care.

there was a girl in my sorority in college that was two years ahead of me and we called her drunk alter ego the miz. LOL

There are plenty of movie stars who have acted this way, but it was at a time when news couldn't spread this fast.
Interesting that Rolling Stone break came out the same day as Majors' accuser's arrest.
So it sounds like a Cosby type thing. Open secret in the industry that normal folk maybe don't hear much about. But those in the business are discussing it behind the scenes
