Eh these still felt like borderline headliners (subs) at the time. They’re all definitely headliners now, but the same could be said for Travis at Lolla in 2018 or whatever.

I just can’t picture Gorillaz accepting a slot that plays less than 90 minutes at this point. That said, I caught their show in 2017 and it was absolutely fantastic!
I wonder if Coachella tries a different strategy next year and goes with 6 headline level acts, and gives all 6 acts 90 minutes. It’s looking like US festivals are all going to take place over a 60 day period next year if they happen at all. The shortened festival window will just make the market that much more competitive. I have no idea what demand will look like in one month, but in my opinion it’s going to take some serious star power to lure 250k people into purchasing tickets in January.

I hoping The Cure break out one day and become a legitimate headliner.

This year's littered with music that should be a no brainer for GV to book - Phoebe, Rina Sawayama, Fiona Apple, Waxahatchee, Fleet Foxes, Bartees Strange, Dua Lipa all stick out to me personally.
Dua Lipa's UK arena tour ends Tuesday Sep 28th 2021. If she plays it's be her/band and whatever they do with video screens.
Phoebe might get drowned out by an EDM set next door or bake in the sun.
Cardi is a safe booking for any festival. Not quite demanding a mega star deal, but a well recognised name that will rope people in.
Obviously nobody is questions # of hits or her high profile. Question is does she actually have a show longer than 40 mins to warrant such bookings, especially without reliance on guests.
Still doing 35 min sets? Strokes play twice as long.
The Strokes could play a 3 hour set and still wouldn’t outdraw Cardi B.
Strokes did 90k at a festival in South America. Strokes can draw more in Europe as well. Maybe standalone arena shows in NYC/LA as well. For the next round of US festivals Cardi would draw more, but that's mostly down to her fans finally getting a chance to see her. Strokes have toured for 20 years.
I saw about 20 minutes of Cardi at ACL 2019 and a couple full set pro-shot videos. She still has a steep learning curve on the concert front. Fans in 2019 were somewhat forgiving of shortcomings in 2019 due to fast ascension/pregnancy/booking rarity.
It’s crazy to me that there are grown men who still refuse to learn how hip hop shows work.
At the ACL gig she was 30 mins late and the promoters got Mumford to go on 30 mins early because it was a festival at night with no major acts onstage. I guess promoter C3 don't know how Hip Hop works. Cardi was partying in the Dominican Republic until 2am the night before that ACL show.
I was at a Bumbershoot show where Wu-Tang headlined and showed up 30 mins late. It was funny to watch 10k of the 15k people there have their pot wear off because they smoked it too early. I guess their fans and the B-shoot promoter didn't know how hip hop worked.
When Prince or Axl had crazy late shows at least they usually made up for it during the shows themselves.

These same grown men also probably think hip hop shows are only legitimate if they have a band on stage.
They don't care when Kraftwerk have a simple backline and may or may not have playback elements doing heavy lifting. Hip Hop or EDM in big venues have long compensated for lack of live band with dancers or going crazy with production.

Coachella is definitely the festival which has a history of some questionable headline choices. Taking a shot on some artists on an upward trajectory but no certainty of becoming established.
I worry we may see some flavour of the month hip hop artists being given headline slots. But Coachella not caring because the lineup will sell, and if they have 1 or 2 headliners which are strong enough to headline on their own - they won’t care.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a festival (bar a few mad ones in Europe early last decade) where 6 headliners meant 6 massive acts.
It usually means 5 sub sized acts and 1 genuine headline sized booking.
They will stop calling Adele if they can get 6 cheaper acts and sell the festival out.

Have your fake sources heard anything about 6 headliners?
