To be fair, those artists had insanely fast ascensions. Marina and Ari Lennox were singled out too which in hindsight seems justified. Rex Orange County still seems like a questionable second liner too.
There’s no way Rex stays on the lineup. He’s done nothing to remain relevant in 2021.
To be fair, you could that about lot of artists on the line up. Only a few have actually exploded even bigger during 2020.
Sort of on topic, I have to think Phoebe Bridgers is on the line up. She's the biggest indie artist of 2020 and has consistently remained in the spotlight despite not being able to do shows. I doubt that tour with 1975 is still gonna happen as she's quickly ascending past her placement now.
It’s crazy to me that there are grown men who still refuse to learn how hip hop shows work.
Out of the 10 times Ive seen Kanye he has been late twice. Once by his own doing and the other because of production shit. Let’s just categorize the rappers into who you expect to be late and the ones who aren’t. The first time I saw Cardi she showed up on stage for the last 10 mins out of a scheduled 60.
She also does I Like It, MotorSport and Girls Like You in her sets and I’m pretty sure Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Migos, Nicki Minaj and Maroon 5 didn’t all show up for her sets. It won’t be a “waste” if Megan isn’t there.
I think it would disappoint most everyone who watched a Cardi headline set next year if Megan didn’t show for the one song they all wanna hear.

Phoebe probably wouldve exploded even more after that tour with The 1975 if it had happened. She should def be there and they might even put her at the end of the second line, if not 3rd at worst.

This year's littered with music that should be a no brainer for GV to book - Phoebe, Rina Sawayama, Fiona Apple, Waxahatchee, Fleet Foxes, Bartees Strange, Dua Lipa all stick out to me personally.

Trying to make a 2021 mock while predicting who will crossover from the old lineup and who needs to be added now vs. who can wait until 2022 is a real pain in the ass but hopefully this is the last one of this kind I have to make.
Sadly I think Gorillaz's days of being able to headline Coachella are behind them. I think sub or maybe co-headline are they only way the come back.
Think they are another act like Phoenix, LCD, The Strokes, etc who hit their ceiling too soon and are of no use here now, unfortunately.
What's weird is some of these will still take daytime sets at eurofests. I get that the prestige of headlining Coachella helps their billing at other stateside fests. Similarly, demotions would just cause a ripple effect. Probably better to just stay away and keep the title intact.

i think the monolithic nature of rock music and it's dominance in popular music over many decades trained a lot of people to think that live music is just that one thing: a bunch of dudes on stage playing analog instruments. throw in a dose of conscious or unconscious prejudice against non-white males and you've got a nice resentment stew cooking against hip-hop, pop, and electronic music.
i don't say that to be ugly or judgmental. i cut my live music teeth seeing mostly metal in the 90s, so for a while that type of performance and vibe was live music to me. what helped was exposure, which is why music festivals are so great, as i end up checking out things just out of curiosity and end up being turned on to a whole new form of live entertainment.
but it's also OK to just not like something, so long as it isn't contempt prior to investigation.

I love pop and electronic shows, but always get disappointed by hip-hop shows where the rapper isn't even trying to actually perform the music live, just yelling half the lines over the existing track. It may be lit, but unless I'm a huge fan of the song and yelling along in the thick of it, that does nothing for me. "You just don't get how hip hop shows work" I mean, I guess I don't.

80's and 90's Kids also grew up trying to conquer guitar so seeing it used at its highest form was probably appealing to them. Far less set out to do the same with keyboards and DAW's were a newer concept.
That said, they could also be oblivious to the fact that many don't have access to the same tools so people find rhythm/melody by whatever means are available.
There's definitely a level of privilege here that I'm probably not smart enough to expand on.
Isn’t ACL like Lolla where that’s still a headliner? Not saying Gorillaz make the most sense to headline Coachella but I still see arguments for them still headlining festivals. Especially with how well received Song Machine was

Yeah, but the second cut of headliners at Lolla and ACL typically includes some Coachella subs. I think they could go either way.

Didn't really make as much noise as Humanz did though...

Kinda surprising with how horrible the reception to Humanz was. Humanz had a tour that people knew would happen though. Using this year to judge billing is kind of a crap shoot.
