Rumor has it my university is switching to online classes after spring break. This is such an overreaction oh my god
Not really. As others have said, containment is our only weapon right now. If it spreads much more and at a rapid pace we are going to be another Italy. Our health care system will literally collapse under the weight of thousands of infected patients at once. I know it’s inconvenient and seems like overkill, but please consider those that can not fight this off as easily as you can.
And on that note, someone today stole all the hand sanitizer wipes you use on the grocery buggies. Just ran out of the store with them.
I think my biggest issue with canceling all events, limiting bars, restaurants and spaces to under a set amount of people is the fact that I and many others still have to go to work regardless of if everything is canceled or closed. So really the chances of people catching and spreading the virus is still there, everyones lives are just more miserable for the rest of the year. It's a half assed approach
We had a confirmed case on campus (ASU) and as of now classes are still business as usual, but the students are on spring break this week so that may change by the time they come back.
No surprise that my Maymester trip to Japan got cancelled so hopefully it’s safe to travel there come December time.
My school had study abroad trips over the summer to Italy and China planned for this summer. My school no longer has study abroad trips to Italy and China over the summer.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools is mobilizing suspension of school for a couple weeks. Handed out forms to the kids today to gauge how many of them need laptops to loan out so we don’t have to eat two weeks of summer vacation.
We don’t even have any confirmed cases in the county.
Consider everyone’s shit lost.
Edit: To give you an idea of how big this is, MDCPS is the 4th largest district in the country. You’re talking hundreds of thousands of kids sitting at home.
I don't think this is people losing their shit. This is being prudent. Look at China. I read somewhere today that someone called what they did in response to this a "social nuclear bomb," in that they put entire municipalities, and most of the country, on total lockdown. The result? They're way down in new daily reported cases right now, a full two months after this thing really started in earnest...and that's a collectivist culture with a totalitarian regime that mobilized massive amounts of resources to fight this thing.
Meanwhile, in the US, we have people violating quarantine to go to parties...because they feel like it, I guess? People are talking about being totally cool contracting a disease they know nothing about so they can go to a concert, and talking about how it shouldn't matter because it's only the elderly and immunocompromised who'll be severely impacted, which is borderline sociopathic considering those are all, you know, human beings. We're woefully under-testing - South Korea has tested over 200,000 people, at this point, and China rolls out millions of testing kits every week. We're sure as shit not equipped enough in terms of infrastructure to erect two 2,600-bed hospitals in a matter of days, the way China did. And don't even get me started on our under-funded and under-resourced public health system.
Bottom line: We're vulnerable to this being very bad. Let's say we lowball the CFR at 2%, despite the current W.H.O. estimate being 3.5%-4%. That'd still make it 20 times deadlier than the flu, which it's being estimated will kill 20,000-50,000 Americans this year. Do the math. Those are bad numbers any way you slice it.
So...yeah. Sorry for the rant, but I think we all need to shift our perspective, here, and realize that taking any measures we can to "flatten the curve" and keep our health care system from being overwhelmed are going to translate into significant numbers of lives. I wouldn't call doing things like preemptive social distancing losing our shit, in that context.

Didn't mean to suggest that there’s not good reason for us to be losing our shit. Just that I’ve never seen the global community this scrambled about something like this before. We’re in uncharted territory. That’s all.
i keep seeing people say "there are only outbreaks in election years" or "smoking kills X amount of people every year" and those are also some real hot bad takes

Ah, sorry. I'll admit, I'm a bit frazzled from having heard waaaaaay too many people beating the "It's not that big a deal!" drum, and therefore probably was on a hair trigger for a rant like that. My bad.

Imagine having to explain to a bunch of 12 year old kids that, “No, it’s not a fun idea to get one kid sick so that the rest of the school can go on an early spring break.”

An argument broke out in the Penguins Facebook group that I'm a member of about the covid-19 crisis/it's not a crisis and someone said to me that she doesn't care what's happening in Italy. She said "not to be cruel, but I don't care if those people are dying."
Most of the hockey fans in that group are firm in their beliefs that this is nothing but a media/Democrat concocted story to make Trump look bad and they're pissed off because there's a good chance the remaining hockey games will start not allowing spectators in the arenas. Read that again: they're mad because they can't (or have the potential to not be able to go) to a hockey game.
I am thinking that it's time for me to leave the group before I completely loose my shit.

Pretty similar to the NHL's take on CTE and head injuries... The league is like 50 years behind. I'd rather not watch the Penguins blow the last month anyways...
I'm starting to think that many people only believe that the people they personally know exist and everyone else is a bot or something.
Also getting mentally ready to cancel my trip to Amsterdam/berlin/ Portugal in early April. Hopefully this blows over by the time Primavera Barcelona comes around. This whole thing is making me realize that I need to bank on music events for a source of joy a little less and focus more on stuff under my control.
you and me both, just sitting here at work (cuz she told me not to come) just hanging on every text.
Apparently they're not freaking worried at all since they gave her a mask, sat her in general population ER waiting room, and have her more than halfway down the "urgent" list.
They had a confirmed case of corona at Eisenhower Hospital in Palm Springs and they put the dude in the room next to my grandmother who is very, very sick and has a severely depressed immune system. So it seems some hospitals are not properly quarantining patients anyways.
Glad your wife is corona-free tho. Hope her flu goes away soon!
I have two friends that live in northern Italy. They really can not express how bad it is right now. One of them if so scared for his young son.
I know we won't have the answer to this for some time, if at all, but I wonder why it's been so bad in Italy, specifically. I know it's still a developing situation and it all might average out, globally, but why has that country, in particular, ended up so hard-hit? Is it because they have the oldest population in Europe, on average? Is it a different strain of the virus that's harder to shake? Is it because smoking is more prevalent there?

5 hours and countless tests later, she leaves with a prescription for Benadryl. Glad she’s okay but my goodness what a horrible, stressful day and we’re the lucky ones

I have friends in Barca and Prague right now. Ones getting called back (State) and ones doing all online classes now (UGA).
This weekend our family is supposed to get together to celebrate my brother's birthday, including my grandparents, both aged 77, one of whom is in fantastic health other than his lack of a pancreas and complete reliance on insulin. Grandma is in decent health too aside from mobility issues and lupus. Anyway I kinda feel like I should just stay home so as to not risk anything. I interact with the public in a college town and yesterday as one of our employees was leaving he said to not be surprised if he calls out Wednesday because he wasn't feeling well...and a different employee went home today. These kids get sick all the time and I'm fairly used to that, but eh, I get nervous. And there are so many perspectives online, it's hard to know what to do and who to trust for direction.
I think this is gonna hit us hard in the next month. I would have laughed if you told me entire states were going into quarantine a few days ago but it seems almost inevitable now. Crazy times.

I think next couple of weeks are very crucial
it’s good that many states will make tough calls on their own but it does not inspire confidence that our president is a dumbass more concerned about the stock market than people’s lives.
Spring break is next week for me, and all my professors are telling us to be aware there's a "very small chance" we could end up moving everything online when we come back. Amherst and Smith have already done so, we'll see what happens.
NOLA just cancelled everything but festivals. All the parades, Wednesday at the square all cancelled (not Jefferson parish yet). Three presumed infected, three different hospitals.
Buku is this weekend and they haven't cancelled yet.
