In my city, I watched small business after small business absolutely crippled by lockdown restrictions, and that was in Florida of all places where we only locked down for about a month. Granted, many survived. As a small business owner myself, it really depressed me to watch as restaurants, thrift stores, media stores, and others died out, all while mega corporations like Amazon, Walmart, etc. thrived.
Does this prompt adjacent discussions about maintaining a healthy stream of business capital and a looming threat of mega corporations swallowing small business in threatening marketing conditions? Yes.
But in Florida, we are only just now going through our worst COVID wave yet, and it seems directly tied to the delta variant plus lagging vaccinations causing mostly the unvaccinated getting sick. Our previous peaks were rough, but local mask mandates seemed to play a huge role in mitigating the brutal numbers seen in spots like New York City, Iran, etc.
Do lockdowns such as these truly make that significant of a difference? I'm all for mask mandates, social distancing, and other countermeasures. But these far-reaching lockdowns arbitrarily tied to a date and a possibly unrealistic goal of 80 percent vaccinated (although, I'm not sure how vaccine hesitant other countries are) disturb me more than they give me confidence. I'd love to read your thoughts about this, as your posts and analyses have given me much clarity throughout this pandemic.
a big difference between lockdowns in the US and lockdowns in other countries is that the businesses we covered and workers were paid so that neither really lost everything. some still struggled but that majority of both were able to survive the lockdowns. in the US not everyone qualified for government assistance so it was much more of a hardship.
That is a great point. If governments are willing/able to pay businesses and their citizens money during lockdowns, the economic impact is definitely mitigated. In the U.S., it was pretty much every business and man/woman for themselves. I qualified for the PPP loan and the EIDL, but the PPP didn't come close to covering more than a couple months income for me. I have a lot saved up so weathered the storm, but I feel for the even smaller or lower margin businesses who got dealt a shitty hand. The rollout was also inefficient and incompetent, taking months on months on months for applications to process. Indie music venues were also hit disastrously, and their stimulus money took ages to distribute as well.
lol. I just got mu first dose last week. The rollout here has been WILDLY different than there.
Jack still hasn’t gotten his at all. He’s waiting for Pfizer Bc the gov here did a whole scare campaign around Astra Zeneca. I got AZ Bc they’re saying they won’t let us out of lockdown till we reach 80% double vaccinated in NSW.
Lmao what, that's insane.
were experiencing higher rates of infections now than we did at the start of COVID. We had like 1,000 new cases today I think. At the onset of COVID I don’t think we ever had more than like 500 cases a day.

Yea, we have JobKeeper and JobSeeker. Which is basically the government giving businesses money to help keep employees on, and giving people who lost work due to COVID money while they search for work.
Our restrictions are more or less the same as what’s in VIC, except that we don’t have an end date right now I think? I know they’re starting vaccinated restrictions on Sept 13. Which is basically those who can show they’re double vaccinated will get additional privileges (such as being allowed outside with groups up to 5 for recreational activity, rather than just in pairs from the same household for exercise). Will be interesting to see how that plays out though. People have been slow to get vaccinated, so not many people have had both jabs. In addition to that, people don’t seem to be abiding by the restrictions anyways. When I take my dog for a walk everyday the park is PACKED with people. Most unmasked, and def in groups larger than 2. It’s really frustrating to watch. So when these modified restrictions come into play for double vaccinated I feel like people will just do whatever they want and hope they don’t get caught.
You also have to remember than until the delta strain we’ve had basically no COVID here. We went into this hard lockdown after our daily cases climbed to 60. Which is the most we’d had all year. ACT went into a snap lockdown with 1 new case. We’re also still dealing with hard border closures with no one in or out more or less and all kinds of rules around that too. So having a vaccination goal isn’t crazy for us, Bc unlike the US we’ve actually had control of things up until lately.
I wonder what is going to happen if the FDA doesn't approve the boosters before 9/20? Seems like a real possibility. Really seems like the Biden admin got ahead of themselves on this booster thing.

The FDA has scheduled a meeting for September 17th to discuss the need for boosters for the general population.
But they can go ahead and give them under the EUA they already have.

My understanding is the current EUA only covers boosters for the immunocompromised though Pfizer and Moderna have applied to expand it to everyone. If the FDA doesn't expand the EUA to cover boosters for everyone is the Biden admin going to tell doctors to just ignore the FDA? I guess we'll see what happens after the 17th.

seems pretty simple to me. the white house will ask for resignations until they get to someone that will approve the boosters.

That would be a terrible look. It also looks like the CDC might not recommend boosters for everyone based on the available data. The messaging on this could be a mess.

I dont think a mass purge of the FDA bureaucracy would be a terrible look at all considering how terribly they have botched the under 12 vaccine rollout.

Wait. Your original post wasn't sarcasm?
no. I think the FDA will get the point and will pass what the White House wants but its pretty clear that the Slavitt, Fauci, Kessler, and Murthy group are running vaccine policy and not the FDA going forward.

At that point it really seems like gladhanding to approve booster shots that aren't really necessary for most people. I've read horror stories about the FDA failing to approve meds in a decent timeframe but right now I'm still skeptical about the necessity of boosters for people with solid immune systems.
It's amazing the lengths that people will go to to only believe the science that they want to believe.
It's also retroactively amazing that I once loved a show starring Andy Dick and Joe Rogan.
Newsradio, yes?! Haven't thought about that show in AGES...Was some good shit back in the day.
Peeps have been sharing the awesome exchange between Bill Burr and Joe Rogan from last year, with Burr putting bitch ass Joe in his place. I missed it the first time around, but saw it on Reddit last night. Totally owned his stupid backwards ass.

There had to be a point when Rogan went back to Fear Factor and this was it. Still curious if he knows what is in the steroids he has taken in the past to try and be as jacked at the ufc fighters. Interesting thing is he has a tour coming up and has a date in New Orleans on saturday. Dont know how that is going to go, and a date in LA which has vaccine requirements since its indoors. But really, who says he isnt vaccinated anyway just like all his other colleagues. Is there a video of him taking Ivermectin? He can make himself look like shit on camera and brag about all the things that he did to himself to ''beat'' covid.

One of my friends from high school is a nurse who has been working in a covid unit for the whole pandemic, and her burnout on FB is palpable. She posted a couple videos recently to share what her days look like that are just absolutely sobering. Especially when you consider the first video was before Delta came around or the vaccine was available to most.
Covid is weird as fuck.,Andrea had people where she works that were out with covid last week . We went to shows Charlotte and Asheville last weekend. She had no symptoms until Sun. night after we got home. She had lots of sneezing and coughing a little bit of a fever for a little while. She tested positive Tue. morning. I’ve been out of work with her because I was waiting on my test results. We never distanced from each other because I figured I probably already had it, just with no symptoms. Finally got the results tonight and I don’t have it.
my company sent out their strongest "come the fuck on" to date w a whole page of common myths debunked and all kinds of links to information, reiterated that anyone who isn't vaccinated has to use PTO if they have to miss time, and said anyone who isn't capable of working from home will be set up and made sure they're using it

Anyone know whether if my friend brings his full vax record, which shows dates for Pfizer vaccinations, to Terminal West (AEG venue, Atlanta) that will be considered sufficient proof?
Trying to contact the venue but their phones aren't manned and I'm not sure whether I will get a reply email in time.

Welp, the day that I knew was going to arrive at some point has finally come: someone in my household is having all sorts of COVID symptoms.
I have a bit of a sore throat and had a runny nose at times yesterday (though now not anymore). Hope this will all pass soon.
Hope that they are vaxxed! I know you are so here's to also hoping you don't have too much trouble. Based on what we know, you shouldn't. If that person's symptoms are bad, they might want to contact their doctor about the antibodies therapy. In our area, anyone can get the monoclonal antibodies treatment with a positive covid test result if they aren't vaccinated. The guidelines around here for getting the antibodies get a little weirder harder to understand for those who are already vaccinated.
