Y’alllllll restaurants & bars here in NYC are gonna stop asking for proof of vaccinations and as much as I WANT this to be the end of Covid, I am so freaked. I work in the restaurant industry & have great covid-believing employers, but damn those proof of vax’s kept me sane. Anyone else feeling super conflicted with these rollbacks?
Also: Adams sucks. Take me to the timeline where Wiley or even Garcia won.

Co-sign on that last part.
And, yeah, I really wish the city were not trying for let ‘er rip mode. Admittedly, I’ve been a hermit the last couple of months because of the baby, but the vax requirement is a good thing that shouldn’t go away.

I feel the same about it going away over here in Boston. Makes zero sense to drop all of these just to have them rise all over again. Restaurants I understand because they have been struggling but to allow packed concert venues and Arenas with untested unvaxxed people is just ASKING for a spike

im all the way down in MS so ive been dealing with lax regulations for months now but im failing to comprehend how NYC can rollback so heavily after requiring vaccination to do almost anything
like what has changed that has prompted that decision? the virus is certainly still around and cases will almost certainly be at risk of rising if we don't continue to encourage people to get vaccinated or otherwise protect themselves and everyone around them
it's frustrating because i know we can't live like this forever but the rollback of some of these restrictions everywhere is so interesting to me
i would genuinely be fine providing proof of vax for years if that needed to happen. it's even easier now than it used to be with the ability to provide photo evidence or official online proof

What changed is we got a new mayor in office. If Omicron hadn’t happened, these changes would’ve been implemented immediately. He’s a true Capitalist, the peak neoliberal Democrat who would’ve been called a Republican 20 years ago. “Fuck the poor” politician.

I still can’t believe our two choices were him and Curtis fucking Sliwa. Strong work, NYC.
I think another factor is that a lot of polling is coming out indicating COVID restrictions are a massive political poison pill. You’ve got your “I never gave a shit” people and your “I’m vaccinated and tired and maybe also caught and survived COVID so now I don’t give a shit” blocs coming together. Sadly, people who continue to give a shit are, I think, pretty outnumbered, even in places like NYC.

group travel to the city becomes very difficult if you need to go through the process of confirming everyone in your group is vaccinated. think about a school field trip for instance.
You guys are getting a sweet sweet taste of what we have been dealing with here in the south for a fucking year. COVID IS OVER!!! Party!
It sucks. Just mask up and do your best.
Haha yeah. I do feel bad that everywhere seems to have embraced that COVID is over, but I also feel like Will Poulter in that meme. "You guys had restrictions?"

And yet the psychopaths are still protesting outside Wu's house
I'm all for relaxing restrictions when cases/hospitalizations are low but the vaxx mandate seems like a good one to keep in place.
yeah I think this is a great one sentence summary of how i'm feeling
I'm also not in the industry so maybe I don't have a firm grasp on how it has been negatively affecting their business. That said I was in LA over the weekend and every restaurant I went to was absolutely packed even with a mandate in place.
The mayor of Boston is traditionally one of the most hated and ridiculed people among the right in Massachusetts, but now that the mayor is a woman of Chinese descent - the hate seemed to kick up another level.

I've mentioned this before but its pretty fascinating that this is 100% true about Adams, and yet his voting block is incredibly poor and impoverished. cities really might be moving towards more of the southern style of politics where poor and uneducated people shoot themselves in the foot by electing politicians who dont care about them

yeah i get that but also i feel like if we can keep pushing people will give in at some point and just get the damn vaccine whether they believe in it or not
small example here but when Ole Miss made it to the Sugar Bowl this year, i figured a decent bit of fans would choose not to go because of the city's vax mandate (some still did this) but i saw countless people on socials saying stuff like "well i guess ill get the damn shot to go see the Rebs play"
i mean its shitty in the sense that they still don't care but also we know the benefits of them getting the vaccine and regardless of the beliefs of the holder, the benefits are still there

its fucking disgusting. Boston and eastern MA in general is honestly one of the most racist places in the northeast. if you want further proof look at the wbz boston comment section on FB. also the one time i was at a bruins game i lost track of all the hard R n words I heard

I'm at the point, where despite massive covid anxiety on a personal level, logically it makes sense to drop all restrictions with how low cases are and how high vaccinations are (I'll keep a mask on though)... giving people the option to return to a normal way of living when certain metrics have been met is just a logical way to maintain trust in public health. But honestly, I had hoped the vax requirement would stay forever. Both for keeping cases low and to spite the idiots that won't get the vax (and to add some additional social pressure to comply).

Literally every comment section of any news site is a cesspool.
And yeah, there's a gross amount of racism in New England too. The South Shore is notorious for it. Or Loudon on race weekend. Or northern Maine. I'm from eastern CT and southern Worcester County and it's awful out there too.

I think what annoys me most about dropping entry requirements around the country is that it validates the loudmouth antivax crowd. They were right to call the bluff. All they had to do was hold out for a few months. This is only going to embolden them in the future, whether it's a new spike or a new emergency situation altogether that requires care.

I wouldn’t discount the fact that he was the “I’m going to be tough on crime in the traditional sense” Democratic candidate, and a lot of those poor and impoverished parts of the city you’re talking about had seen violent crime spike in the past year and change. Voters from those areas specifically called it out as an issue during the campaign.
I dunno. I think he sucks and I didn’t put him on my primary ballot at all, but I’d caution against writing off the POV of the demographic that voted for him as against their self-interest without a full picture of what their self-interest is.

I find it hard to believe being tough on crime in a traditional sense would be good for people of the Bronx. maybe I am mistaken, my dad grew up in the bronx but I have never spent any significant time there.

That one is perplexing though I saw we were under 1,000 reported cases yesterday. I'm not sure if that means the virus really is going away or just more people are testing at home and not reporting.

I literally had to intervene on a hate crime on the PATH train where a man was absolutely trying to rub himself on a East Asian woman about my age. She was terrified so I had to step in and go like “Back up buddy” and then distract him until she got off the train. She thanked me but it all goes to the bystander training I had.

I wouldn't say it's going away but cases are definitely down. You can also look at hospitalization numbers. The 7 day moving average for new hospitalizations in NYC is the lowest it has been since July.

Adams is a black man who's pro-police AND pro billionaire. In terms of optics, that covers an INSANE amount of ground. The majority of his voters in the primary had pro-police and/or anti-socialist agendas. In the first round he did not lead too tremendously from Garcia and Wiley, and in the second round he only beat Garcia by 1%. There are plenty of people who live below the poverty line who did NOT want him as their mayor. But the truth is, voter turn out is always shitty, especially in a primary.
Just got the call from preschool to pick up our kid because he's got a cough and is cranky. I looked at the calendar and he'll only have been in school for 6 days this month, assuming he'll be out tomorrow. Also set him up for his bazillionth covid test.
I understand it is what it is, it's just been super hard to continue working and doing all the regular stuff I need to do because nobody really thinks covid is a thing anymore at work.
He's home again today because he was sleeping hard when it was time to leave for preschool and wanted him to get the rest. Also my university lifted their mask mandate.
