for the life of me I cant understand the logic of turning down a booster while also wearing a N95 at all times
i get it in his case. If i got arrhythmia after a first booster i prob wouldnt go for a second. especially after a fresh infection. I personally havent gone for a 4th booster yet bc im waiting for the Omicron specific one to come out in August

Welp! Worked in healthcare this entire time, 1.5yrs in the hospital, 1+ in a clinic, and I finally caught Covid at Roo. Tbh I didn't even consider that it would be Covid. It was the same gunky cough I have had after every Bonnaroo, especially this one where I kept forgetting my bandanna. Unfortunately I did say "Hi" to my kids upon arriving home, though I was near them for only a couple of minutes. They are all quarantining too and rightfully mad at me. I tested and it popped positive as soon as the liquid met the line but only after another campmate tested positive and relayed their results.
I'm missing the regional burn where I was set to run the bar and play several sets so that's a bummer. The worst part is having no idea when I caught it so I'm taking tests everyday to try to have some grasp on infectiousness. The good is that I'm feeling fine other than the cough. My booster was back in August and my friend is letting me stay at her house while she goes to the burn. Biggest win is that I didn't infect my parents who are high risk!
Our daughter's BFF's family moved into a house with a pool and we went over there for the first time on Monday. There were seven or eight girls playing in the pool for a few hours. Next day we find out one of the girls tested positive. Today our daughter did. She's vaxxed and the symptoms are mostly cold-like so far. Fingers crossed she feels better soon. Mrs gazer and I are masking around the kid but part of me wants to just go ahead and get it to not have to worry about it for a little while.

I've had friends who did that. Sometimes it makes sense.

Because I had chest pains and irregular heartbeat for a while after receiving my first Moderna booster, that's why.
Plus, even if I decide to take that risk down the road, why get that second booster two weeks after I recovered from Omicron? Many epidemiologists and the CDC recommend waiting up to three months after recovering from COVID before getting your next shot.
Also, the Israeli study from early 2022 indicates that there's not a whole lot of difference is the amount of protection received from four shots, as opposed to three shots. That may change, once Moderna's Omicron-specific vaccine is available later this summer, but that's not the case now.

So, mixed news on both Moderna and Pfizer's Omicron-specific boosters. Both were based on the BA.1 spike, and with BA.4 and BA.5 rising to dominance, the big question was how they'd handle those versions of the variant.
Studies showed both neutralized BA.4 and BA.5. THAT'S GOOD.
There was a 3-fold reduction in neutralization of BA.4 and BA.5 as compared to BA.1, which might mean some bad things for sterilizing immunity. THAT'S BAD.
All sera registered neutralizing antibodies above the threshold that'd count as immunogenic for BA.4 and BA.5. THAT'S GOOD.
Ultimately, it'll be better for these versions of the vaccines to be out there in the fall - approval is expected in August - than if they weren't, but damn, does it suck to continually be one step behind this virus so that we're not really kicking its ass.
Did anyone else who got the rona get insanely chapped lips? It hurt to open my mouth and my top lip was dark purple from the irritation. It set in 0-100 in about an hour then lasted a few days and went away 100-0 in about an hour.
Operation Don't Bring COVID Home From Bonnaroo is a bust. Fuck.
I feel fine. I've been testing every day and this is my first positive. But I'm terrified I gave it to my daughter.
Did her mom get a shot while she was in utero? I hear that helps!
That sucks and I'm sorry. I hope the fact that you feel fine is a good sign. I felt awful before I even tested, so maybe it's a very mild case?
Yeah. Honestly, I don't care about myself at all. I'm sure I'll be fine - I've had four shots and prior COVID. My main concern is the baby. We've been in very close contact the past 3 days. My wife got her fourth shot about 3-4 weeks ago and is still breastfeeding, so she should be getting some antibodies that way. I just don't want her to get it at all, and that may be a pipe dream.

Great about about the extra antibodies!
If it helps, it seems like everyone is getting it.

Mrs gazer tested positive yesterday. She and our daughter have had mild symptoms so far and our daughter has been doing a little better the last couple days. I'm still negative but have a little bit of a sore throat and some fatigue. Seems likely I'll be positive in a day or two, kind of wish I already was so we could stop masking at home and I could sleep in our bed instead of having my wife and daughter in that and me on an air mattress in our daughter's room, which I did last night.
It's weird after being careful when out of the house for so long that I now have to be careful IN the house.

Fine so far, but given it was six days from exposure to positive test for me, it’s going to be a long wait with fingers crossed. Thank you for asking, though.

You have it. Trust me.
Yep. After four days of having symptoms and testing negative, I finally tested positive today, day five. My symptoms are still pretty mild, mostly just tired. The kid is back to normal and mrs gazer got Paxlovid and is doing a bit better.
Would rather none of us got it but at least it's at a time when we didn't have any travel planned and I don't have any shows right away. We might have a boring holiday weekend, but who wants to celebrate Murica these days anyway...

It's so weird - what you describe above is very much in line with the experience most people I know who've caught it recently have had: Symptoms for several days while testing negative on rapid antigen tests. It was the opposite for me this time: I was totally asymptomatic until the evening after I tested positive for the first time, and I'd been serial testing daily for almost a week.
This, coupled with the fact that it was at least six days for me from exposure to positive test/symptoms, makes me wonder if I somehow caught a non-Omicron variant, for which this pattern would be more typical. It'd be unlikely given how dominant the Omicron lineage is, but Delta et al. are still out there, so I dunno. I asked around today at a couple of testing sites if there were a way for me to find out what variant I have, and all said no - I really wish there were a way for the average schmuck like me to get that information.

Is there anyway you could have been exposed AFTER bonnaroo?

Glad y'all are doing better, and that you're doing okay so far. Hopefully u and your wife get over it quick without much trouble!
Is there anyway you could have been exposed AFTER bonnaroo?
Yeah, totally, although it'd have to have been in Nashville on Monday, or in transit back to NYC on Tuesday, because I lived like Oldboy between getting home and going to pick up my wife and daughter at the end of the week. I did take more precautions once I returned to civilization, but there was someone unmasked and coughing behind me on the plane, and I know even N95s aren't magic forcefields that block out everything.
there was someone unmasked and coughing behind me on the plane,
OMG this makes my blood boil. You didn’t get it at Bonnaroo, you got it from this asshole. If Inforoo baby winds up getting COVID, I’m going to hunt them down.
Well, I have COVID(again, had a case in Feb.) Tested positive last night after testing negative the day I got home. Probably means I picked it up while at or traveling to Glasto (I was definitely the only one wearing a mask on the coach from London.)
Glad I got both full festivals in, and managed to make it home.

Glad you got to do the festivals. Get better quick.
