My dad and stepmom took a group trip to Iceland and returned 10 days ago. My dad told me a couple days ago that there were others in the 16-person tour group coughing on the bus a lot, then my stepmom had symptoms and tested positive the day after they got back.
"I've had some cough and sore throat but it's just the hay fever I always get this time of year," my dad said. I asked if they'd been quarantining at all and he said no, they're still sleeping in the same bed and everything. "I just haven't gotten it and I've been able to do everything like normal" like playing golf with friends, doing volunteer reading to children at the library, going shopping, etc., he said. I asked how many times he'd tested and the answer was none! So I told him to test right away and yep, it was positive.
My parents are educated people, liberals, and they follow the news, even getting the NYT delivered to their home. I'm baffled at how he could be so naive and irresponsible. I'm like, dad, it's actions like yours that have made the pandemic as bad as it is!
This is the opposite of the "the pandemic isn't over just because you're over it" viral video. Truly NO ONE cares. No one is being careful anymore (collectively / generally). Even I've surrendered to a certain degree since getting it. I still mask up when I can (esp in travel) but if I wear a mask to work people assume I'm sick. It's nuts.

What are your guys' benchmarks for "over"? Vaccines are as widespread as they're going to get, we're wayyy past the point of convincing people to make any sort of behavioral change they haven't already made, and deaths are 0-2 a day nationwide since April*. There will be an uptick in the winter months as there is with presumably all airborne illness, but I'm not sure how much more "over" is realistic. We know COVID is here to stay. That's a given. The scariest thing to me at this point is long COVID, which seems to be attributed to earlier variants more than anything and is much less common in vaccinated individuals. I'm fully supportive of anyone's decision to mask up or stay inside if that's what makes them most comfortable, but at this point to me that leans more towards overcautious than necessary precaution, and isn't a realistic expectation to have of others.
*Edit: I was incorrect, it's closer to 450/day.

i agree with you on that, of course i’ll still boost, mask in required settings and respect other peoples boundaries regarding covid but theres not much else we can do on an individual level. all we can do is hope we eventually get a cure. Your death statistic is off tho, its around 450/day in the us. its 0-2 a day in many states

Oh you're right, when I googled it the graph defaulted to my city and state. Thanks, I'll edit.
It's no longer a pandemic it's an endemic. So it's technically never over.
I get it, I'm over it too but that doesn't mean I don't want to be safe and still try to not get it. I do also understand that I have comfortability issues in indoor places, especially places like restaurants, I can't just pretend life is like it was. But that's a me issue.
I really dgaf if someone doesn't want to mask and do the most or whatever. Do you, I'll do me.

Absolutely, i think a lot of the reason so many people do still isolate and mask is because of the trauma and uneasy feeling of seeing maskless people early in the pandemic. I think its totally valid to continue to live and behave as you did in the thick of the pandemic. really its just a matter of whats most comfortable to you

I appreciate job sites that want us to mask up indoors, but I work dropping cases and pushing shit it's just too damn hot. It feels like we all have decided on trade offs we will do if we are maskers - and boundaries. I also think that people realize that they get way too close to each other, and the social distancing actually does help if someone is infected and doesn't know yet. I think I called it an endemic a year ago, and my roomie was like not yet (teachers). But here we are too because it's bullshit that there isn't judgements going around whether you wear or don't wear a mask, all depending on certain people's thoughts. The ability for people to create a tolerance and move on is way more important at this stage of the game.

Working in construction, I get it. The mill is fucking hot and building shit and paint, it is not feasible to expect those worker to have to mask up. Maintaining social distance is definitely the best thing you can od in those situations. Most health & safety workers get that, some are still very adamant about masking up. I am in the production office until my actual office has been built in the mill, and I mask up inside. I am in my own 6'x6' office, with a 500 sq foot HEPA filter air cleaner, so I don't ALWAYS wear my mask, just MOSTLY.
Once I move into the office in the mill, we will see what I do. I will definitely have the HEPA air cleaner regardless.

I'm ok, it's just a very annoying nasal congestion with a LOT of flem. It took forever to go to sleep because I couldn't breathe from my nose, but my mouth was continuously saturated with flem. Also back pain. Throat isn't sore anymore, or maybe it's just numb lol.

Well hopefully it gets better soon. Your symptoms are basically how mine were when I got in January. The phlegm fucked with me too and aggravated my asthma. Only Theraflu seemed to help for me. I hope you find some relief and get some rest. Feel better soon.
Just got my free COVID test in the mail from the post office. They literally expire an 8 days. 🤬🙄
The FDA changed the expiration dating guidelines for a lot of antigen tests and extended the expiration on most of them by a few months. If yours are iHealth, you can see the new expiration here. If they're another brand, some googling should give you the new expiration date.

Mine are pilot. I used Google lens to find the new expiration. It's 12/9/2022. Thank you.
My pharm tech friend always gives me updates, apparently the number of paxlovid she dishes out jumped from 2 to 30 this past week
Timing makes sense, perhaps I'm not the only first timer getting hit.
Maybe this is the strain that gets the rest of the population that hasn't had it yet? My girl, Alice is a first timer. She is not having a good time either. Her symptoms are way worse than what I had.
