Aster is good, but not on the same level. Hereditary and Midsommar are both overrated. Very good movies, but nowhere near as good as the praise they got.
Eggers is a fucking visionary, though. Basically the new Kubrick.
Some of this seeding is bananas, js.
The Farewell 2?? I mean, it was fine.
The Witch 21? What the fuck?
I mentioned it before but the seeding was taken by an average of the tomatometer and RT audience score. Lots of popular A24 films have very low audience scores probably because general audiences didn't "get them". Audiences and critics both seemed to love The Farewell. How would you have seeded them?

Surprisingly, choosing between A Most Violent Year and First Reformed was my most difficult one. Also had a tough time with Ex Machina / Climax, Eighth Grade / It Comes At Night, and of course The Lighthouse / Hereditary.

Started in on my research for this with The Last Black Man In San Francisco. Holy shit that movie. This pandemic made the themes of ownership and community destruction even more relevant and powerful. And it was just plain beautiful.
Now to watch a movie about a farting corpse played by Harry Potter to figure out which is better.

Lol, yeah. Not your fault. Sorry.
The Witch is basically my favorite movie ever, so that'd be number one. After that, I could only do so much because I am still working my way through some of these.
I've generally been a fan of seeding based on some external input, because we're the ones voting on it anyway, so we don't necessarily need to seed it too. Otherwise, we could just rank it and be done with it. I actually like that you used that, so I apologize for the criticism. I simply forgot what your method was.
I've only seen like half the movies on this list so I don't feel qualified to participate necessarily.
I will say It Comes At Night was probably my least favorite of the ones I've seen. That movie did not live up to my expectations.
I virtually ignored it or didn't even know of it when it came out and watched it for the first time the other week. I really loved it ,as I was under self quarantine and felt it relevant to the times. But I'm sure if this were marketed as standard horror fare at its release it would probably rub audiences the wrong way.
By the prompting of this thread, watched Swiss Army Man last night finally. What a crazy ass film. I think I liked it. I definitely respect its willingness to be absurd and surreal with no holding back.

The marketing for that one absolutely messed with my expectations. I really didn't enjoy it when I saw it at a preview screening in 2017. Literally everyone in the theater was pissed and the people taking feedback at the end got an earful haha.

Man. I only saw Moonlight the one time, and I don't really remember feeling particularly strongly about it one way or another, but I feel like I should give it a second chance. That's tough with all the first viewings I need to do in the next couple of days.
Spring Breakers was so bad that about 1/3 of the way through we turned it off. But I have a thing about finishing movies, so I finished it by myself the next day. The only reason I'm happy I finished watching was for this little gem. It didn't need to exist, but a part of me is happy it does.

Just watched the Florida Project. Now watching First Reformed.
Planning on watching mid90s and Climax tonight also. Maybe High Life, too.
No Netflix for me, so those are basically out. Might torrent something though.
Just gonna go ahead and assume I like the Witch more than Waves, given that it's pretty much my favorite movie. But I'll get around to Waves eventually.

Based on the votes so far it seems like Waves won't make it past the first round anyway. Have fun with Climax.
I'm in this weird place where the ones I've seen are genuinely movies I really really like but I've only seen so many so I'd feel bad about abstaining so many.
The last 3 matchups are the only ones I've seen both

Climax was freaky awesome and the soundtrack kicks ass. I think The Witch is my favorite so far. I watched The Lighthouse last night, also great.
I've seen all the films on the list besides Waves, First Reformed, and The Farewell. I started but didn't finish A Ghost Story and High Life but I was also on my CPU at the time of watching those so maybe they deserve another chance.

A Ghost Story is so good but it takes a few days to sit with you to realize how good it is. Its very slow and very abstract in its concept so it can be difficult to sit through (a scene of Rooney Mara eating a pie in one 6-minute shot). But it does stick with you after it's over and very..."ambitious" in its ideas.

Yeah A24 is a bit more niche than a studio like Pixar for example. In hindsight would probably have been better to do just a 16 film bracket. Feel free to just vote on the few brackets you want or just wait until the next round. Seems like all of the more popular films will win the first round anyway.
Also if there is a majority consensus to push the deadline a few more days we can do that, I figured with the lockdowns and quarantines people would have had time to see all of the films they havent already, but I suppose there needs to be in place a strong interest to actually do it anyway.
Finished Climax a little while ago. That escalated real quick. Super interesting visually. Not sure what it was "about", really. Kinda just an exploitation movie, best I could tell.
Watching mid90s. I think it's safe to say it won't be topping A Ghost Story, but I kinda knew that going in. Not that it's bad. The other one is just really good.
If I had another day or two I could probably watch some more stuff. I've only got like five more to get to. I'll let you know tomorrow. The stuff I'm talking about might be runaways anyway.
