This game is already so hard for Town. I think only votes makes that problem even worse. I don't mind trying it once, but it sounds like a disaster.
Like, do Mafia still get to have a thread? Do they still get to coordinate? Town is not going to be able to do that on the game thread? I mean.. how can they win?
My thoughts exactly.
Also, if vote switches aren’t allowed, NO ONE would want to be one of the first few to vote. Everyone would want to wait to vote towards the end of the day/deadline because they’d have more info by then. So how could we negate this issue?
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Round 1 you get vote switches. After that on a given day, your vote is locked until either: A. The day ends B. You are forced to revote C. An Inspector reveal
This would allow for shorter rounds since all you get are revotes. Shortens up the game and adds a different layer of strategy, because if mafia tries to hide votes on their own, they may get stuck.

Another option would be to remove the mafia thread. They get the names but no coordination?

But that's not really enforceable.
we are all adults. We trust that when friends / family are playing a game together, we trust they don’t share outside. JR / Zolah. You and Maddog, etc. if they get caught, punishment.

Commissioner Jaz, maybe we need to get a list of proposals together, and some sort of voting? Ranked choice anyone?
I can certainly do that if no one else wants to, but for the sake of transparency...it may be time for me to move on from Mafia - or at least Commissioner duties. I wasn't planning on sharing that just yet, but honestly my heart isn't in it much and I haven't enjoyed the last few games. It could very well just be burnout - this is my 39th consecutive game, after all - but I think it's time for a break.

I would be against no vote switches, just because there are always things you can reconsider, but I don't like the Kanye move lol, maybe cap it like fantasy sports, X amount of moves per round

Hats off to potentpotables for slyly leading @jakejortles and me to a win! We considered sooooo much funny business but played a pretty vanilla strategy in the end. I've always hated being mafia though, it's so hard for me to stay engaged when I'm paranoid about fucking up; I was fully clenched all day today! Honestly, being a quiet mafioso has always been my biggest weakness at this game, so you crafty fuckers might wanna jot that down.
piggy pablo , you almost had us, you came off to me as by far the strongest player in the game. Can't wait to play on the same side as you lol
Anyway, I'm down to play again, but I hope for a few rule changes. No runoffs is my #1 request, just to make the game that much quicker. Potent mentioned that I had suggested in the mafia thread 18/6 hour day/night, which IMO could be tightened even further to 20/4. This would take some polling of the players before the game starts, to determine the most amenable times. My suggestion would be 10p/2a, with the right mod who can guarantee a late-night presence. I can deal with no role reveals, that makes for a very interesting game, if not overly difficult for the town. I strongly dislike the rules restricting vote switches and post length/amount; if there's no runoffs that shit won't get nearly as exhausting.
I'd be interested in a votes only game, but only if we do it in real-time, like over the course of twenty minutes...Discord maybe? Also I vastly prefer live mafia, played hundreds of such games in college, so if there's a way we could do it over Zoom or whatever, I'd be fucking stoked. Might even be convinced to mod it. I've mostly played live games with Robert's rules of order, and would be happy to explain how that works if anyone is curious. One time I played a game with 35 people!
I like the idea of doing a doctor, but I think my favorite special role is probably the vigilante. My sweet spot is a 13 person game, with 4 mafia, 1 vigilante, 1 doctor, and 7 vanilla townies. I've modded live games a ton, but never one online, so consider this a soft volunteer for future modding.
Sorry for the novel, fam. I was at a board game night (Gloomhaven if anyone is curious) when the deadline happened, checked my phone, briefly celebrated, and finished my session. I have since gotten a little toasty and have been composing this post for almost an hour. Y'all absolutely do *NOT* have to change the rules for me. I'm the new guy, will play again regardless, and hope I'm a little less inconsequential next time lmao

Save the flattery for the next time you're Mafia! I'm pretty conceited.
I wanted to try to say "ok, Manders, let's off Potent". Seemed like that was the only option I had at a point last night was hoping Potent was Mafia and just going that route. Not sure if it would have worked, but I should have given it a shot in extending the olive branch. I have a feeling I would have been rebuked as trying to influence the game too much, though.
I'm definitely interested in mixing things up. I think we've only ever really used this format when I've been playing. I did try to play Secret Hitler at a party, and the other players told me it was identical to Mafia, so I voted for the person I thought was Hitler and elected Hitler. I think that's how that went. I was pretty fucked up by that point.

Warewolf is the boardgame version of "classic" mafia, but I much prefer The Resistance, it's basically the same concept but there's no player elimination.

Since I'm up way late, I came up with a sort of compromise: two mafia threads.
Mafia 123: sticks to the current 11 man rules, with minimal changes. Maybe one or two tweaks to speed things along, but functionally the same for the most part.
Alt Mafia 1: Crazy rules, changed every game depending on how many people we can get involved.
Other aside: Ban ban ban time extensions. A deadline should be a deadline.

I do think a time extension should be granted if someone tries to sneak a vote in last minute before a deadline.
Other than that, I agree. Ive been Vanilla Town for the last year, so I haven’t had a great perspective on it. If someone in the thread thinks of something new... too late... then it’s too late. The Inspector should keep the deadline in mind as it relates to the timing of their reveal. While it’s great that our Towns have a lot of info to pour through, I think at some point we have to draw lines in the sand that bring this game closer to one week as opposed to 3.
The new ideas that get my heart beating the fastest:
1. Quicker time limits 2. No runoffs... especially on day 1 3. More special roles 4. No Mafia Chat... or only a Chat during night time 5. Role reveals (is this of the lynched and whacked?)
I do feel like this game favors Mafia as is, so if we are speeding things up or removing runoffs, I think we should Give Town a new rule that helps town as well.
I’m down for adding a new role, but I’m not a huge fan of the doctor. One of the things I love about our rules is it’s a lot more “intellectual” than classic mafia, and I feel that the doctor is not a dynamic enough role. You can really only play doctor two ways, super random, or by doing the same thing every time (trying to heal inspector). I’m gonna look through a full roles list and see if there’s anything that catches my fancy.
