Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
You have been given the opportunity to curate the lineup for Coachella in competition with nineteen (19) others. The top thirty-five (35) artists on each lineup will be locked into non-compete clauses preventing them from being on any of other festival lineups. At the end of thirty-five rounds, you are able to add up to seventy-five (75) undrafted free agents (UDFAs) to your lineup. These might overlap with other lineups but cannot include any drafted acts.
Tournament
1) Preliminary Round: A single poll will be run for all 20 players. Top 12 will advance to the "grouped knock-out" rounds. Bottom 8 will proceed to play-offs.
2) Play-off Round: Single-elimination tournament to determine the remaining 4 players that will advance to the next round. Seeds will be determined by the number of votes each player got in the preliminary round.
3) Grouped Knock-out Rounds:
- All 16 players who advance to this round will be grouped into 4 levels based on the number of votes obtained in the preliminary round. Players that are ranked 1-4 in preliminaries will be in Level S (as in Supreme), those ranked between 5-8 will be in Level R (as in Runner-up), and those ranked between 9-12 will be in Level T (as in 'Thirth'). Remaining 4 spots will be the winners of the play-off round, who will be named as Level U (as in Underdog).
- Four groups (named as Group A, B, C and D) will be created randomly. Each group will have one S, one R, one T, and one U level player. Randomization is used to determine which S player, for example, will be in which group. There won't be two S (or R or T or U) level players in the same group.
- Each group will have their own single-elimination tournament. Match-ups: S level vs. U level & R level vs. T level. Winner of the match-ups will play against each other two determine the winner of the group.
4) Final Four: Semi-final - Winner of Group A vs. winner of Group D & winner of Group B vs. winner of Group C. Winner of the match-ups will advance to the final, where the champion will be decided via poll (this is to add an element of surprise).
Additional notes: - Voting will be public with the exception of preliminary round and the final round. - Each round will be 72 hours long. - Randomization will be used for determining the seed if two (or more) players get the same vote after the preliminary round or for determining the winner of a tie in any of the match-ups.
Rules
1) Only acts that have performed at Coachella before can be drafted. The master list of draftable acts is provided below (in the second post of this thread), but it will not be updated (so it is your responsibility to check drafted acts). You do not have to use this list, but if you pick an act that is not included in it (we will be checking this continuously), you have to provide proof -other than Wikipedia- showing that the drafted act actually performed at Coachella (this is in regards to secret acts that may have performed). The master list includes all acts (1999-2019) played in Main Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Mojave Tent, Gobi Tent, Sahara Tent, Yuma Tent, Sonora Tent, The Do LaB (to the best of our ability; earlier lineups might not be complete as the information is scarce), Heineken House, Insomniac Tent (2001), Oasis Dome (2006 & 2011), The Dome (2007 & 2009), Heineken Dome (2010, 2012-13), Camping Sessions (2010), and HP Lounge (2019). You can pick acts from the master list in rounds one (1) through thirty-five (35).
2) Bonus list is comprised of acts that (1) were booked for a previous edition but dropped before the festival took place and not booked again, (2) were booked for a previous edition but cancelled their appearance (due to various reasons) and not booked again, and (3) were on original 2020 lineup and not played in any of the previous editions. You can pick acts from the bonus list ONLY in rounds thirty-one (31) through thirty-five (35). Undrafted acts in the bonus list will be eligible to be picked as UDFAs.
3) If an artist showed up in more than one Coachella lineup under the same name, they are not eligible to be picked more than once (i.e. Radiohead showed up in three Coachella lineups, but they are eligible to be drafted only once). If an artist has played under different monikers (i.e. Caribou/Daphni, Plastikman/Richie Hawtin, etc.), they are both eligible to be drafted. If a producer played solo on one occasion (DJ XYZ) and played with producer(s) on other occasions (listed as DJ XYZ [“b2b” ”feat.” ”/” ”&” ”+” “w/”] DJ QWE), they are eligible to be drafted. If a producer played a DJ and a live set under the same name but in separate lineups/occasions, you can only pick them once (no need to specify when picking). If an artist (other than a producer) performs both solo and with a set band, when one is drafted, all iterations are off the table (for example if Neil Young is drafted then Neil Young & Crazy Horse is off the table). The master & bonus lists are prepared such that they reflect all of the occasions above. If you think there is a mistake in these lists, feel free to send me and Bing a DM so that we can discuss.
4) Once an artist is drafted, they are not available for any other drafter.
5) No superjams are allowed.
6) Disputes are handled via a poll. Polls will be run for twelve hours and they cannot be started before 9 AM and after 9 PM Eastern. Drafting will continue while the poll is running.
7) Once we have twenty (20) participants, draft order will be randomly generated for the first round and will continue as a snake draft until round thirty (30). After round thirty (30), draft order will be randomized one more time (new ordering will be provided in advance). Rounds thirty-one (31) through thirty-five (35) will continue as a snake draft using the new draft order.
8) Each participant will have twelve (12) hours to make their pick in the first ten (10) rounds. Selections in rounds eleven (11) through twenty (20) will be eight (8) hours long and in rounds twenty-one (21) through thirty-five (35) will be six (6) hours long. If a pick is missed, the draft will continue as if a pick was made and the participant can select from any remaining acts at the time they make their pick. If a player is still on the clock from a previous turn because their time expired without making a selection, then when their next turn comes around the twelve/eight/six hour wait for their turn is waived. A maximum of two picks are allowed to be "made up" if missed. If a drafter has missed two (or more) picks then when their next turn is up they may only make two selections. Any other outstanding picks are lost.
9) When you post your selection, identify who the pick is, and tag the next person to keep things moving.
10) Trades are allowed and all participants must verify the terms of the trade. Trades are subject to dispute and disputes will be handled by polls.
11) If you think a drafted act is not eligible, you can call for a poll. You have twenty-four (24) hours after that pick is made.
12) Up to seventy-five (75) UDFAs are allowed in the seventy-two (72) hours after the last draft selection. UDFAs can be picked from both lists. There will be an additional twenty-four (24) hour period to review/dispute free agents that may not be eligible after all of the UDFAs have been revealed. Any UDFAs that were deemed ineligible may only be replaced with acts that were neither drafted nor previously selected as undrafted free agents.
13) Any rule changes prior to start will be decided by me and Bing . Any rule changes after the start will require fifteen (15) participant votes in favor prior to adoption. A rule change cannot be instituted to change the process of changing rules or disputes (i.e. no vote to assign a "referee").

I think voting by DMing one of the draft managers would make the most sense to avoid the public ballot problem while also allowing for voting in more than one matchup at once.
I also think I'm tracking with the rules here... it looks very similar to the Bonnaroo draft except instead of pulling from all touring acts from 2015/6 to now, it's just an act that's played Coachella at some point during its history (regardless of year)? I'm glad the real Coachella doesn't apply that rule, but for our purposes it should be fun!
Nbd since it's the first draft of the rules, but I don't think the link to all potentially draftable acts was included? That would be helpful for prep work if it's something you already have handy
40 rounds + 80 free agents seems way too long for what seems like a smallish pool of artists imo
Google says 160 acts played Coachella last year (though I assume that's including smaller stuff not on the main poster as well). I almost certainly wouldn't use all 80 UDFAs for what that's worth
1) Only acts that have performed at Coachella before can be drafted. List of draftable acts is available in this link and also alphabetized below (OP will be updated after each round). This list does not include names that performed in DoLab, Heineken, or any other sponsor tents as they are not part of the official lineup poster. If an artist showed up in more than one Coachella lineup under the same name, they are not eligible to be picked more than once (i.e. Radiohead showed up in three Coachella lineups, but they are eligible to be drafted only once). If an artist has played under different monikers (i.e. Caribou/Daphni, Plastikman/Richie Hawtin, etc.), they are both eligible to be drafted. If a producer played a DJ and a live set under the same name but in separate lineups/occasions, you can only pick them once (no need to specify when picking).
sorry, are you saying you're going to post a big list of acts we can draft? if so, that's a bad idea. a big part of the draft is research.

I got the impression it was any act (dead, inactive, alive, etc.), and given the potential narrowness of the drafting pool I think it should be any act

I also think we should allow multiple acts to be drafted fwiw

I get where you're coming from in principle, but given this context we're all just gonna be making the same list of acts to scout anyway since they're all pulled from the exact same source. It'd save me some time to just have the list
An idea that I had mentioned in conversation off-thread:
Make artists available as many times as they've played the festival. For example, if Radiohead has played three times then they are eligible to appear in three lineups. Is an act less great if they're not as rare? It also provides more literal headliner candidates.

What I find cool about this is that since no one was expecting it (except for our 2 moderators) we all have equal time to prepare. It’ll be cool to see if that changes the result at all

I disagree, I think attention to detail (i.e. making acts that were smaller 10 years ago headliners, undercard gems) is part of the game. It's part of what makes doing a new game fun because we're not going based on previous draft OPs.

if you aren't preparing for drafts months before they start, you're weak
I mean, not really. But also, kind of? Rare acts are generally more exciting than ones that play a ton of fests
Not saying I necessarily disagree with your ideas of allowing three people to have Radiohead (although if you had to pick which specific year's set you were drafting, I don't really want to do that)

Right, but we're going off of previous Coachella lineups which is, if anything, more prescriptive since the list of possible acts to draft is finite. Not knowing how much each act is valued is fun for sure, but publishing an alphabetical list doesn't change that aspect at all. Plus, there's no way to think of any truly unique undercard gems because we have easy access to all possible undercard acts. You can't pick any left-field act no one's thought of by the rules of the game

you can't think of one but digging through these undercards isn't easy work and part of the fun. hard research work should be rewarded.

Re: your first point; this was one of the options I considered.
2. Yeah, it is kind of semi-infinity, everyone from 1999 Coachella can play for example, but acts that were only active in 70s are not eligible.
3. We will link to or list all potentially draftable acts.
