Any word on when this schedule is dropping? I'd been hoping for 10 am but maybe it'll be noon instead. Unfortunately it doesn't appear the artist times are on their pages anymore

I’ll be busy after 1 pm est and won’t have time to dig in. I’d suspect about 10 minutes before that.

How much time do I need to budget into my schedule for arriving early for the larger acts? Do I need to be there an hour early? Half hour? Want to fit in as much music as possible without getting shut out of anything I really care about

Depends on how “big” the bands are. Standard clears out after a performance, Mill and Mine does not.
The only line I’ve ever seen at the Tennessee was before a show and people looking for good seats. You should be able to walk right in.
Bijou is the worst offender. If there is a must see, get there while a band is playing at the Tennessee and you’ll be fine. The line will wrap but you’ll get in.
Churches are weird. The bigger the artist the quicker it fills up. Like I’m sweating Fennesz at the cathedral. It’s gonna be a cool experience but getting in is gonna be rough. I’d say as much time as you have for that one.
Friday: 75 Dollar Bill > Arooj Aftab > Claire Rousay > Damon Locks’ Black Monument Ensemble > Sons of Kemet > Animal Collective > Mdou Moctar
Saturday: Mary Lattimore & William Tyler > Sarah Davachi > Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah > Angel Bat Dawid > Nubya Garcia > Ben LaMar Gay > Jamie Branch Fly or Die > Annette Peacock
Sunday: Alabaster dePlume > John Zorn: Chaos Magick > Sudan Archives > Saul Williams > Yves Tumor
Thursday night is killing me. The overlap of Fennesz, Sparks, Low, and mssv is brutal.
Ya, Thursday is rough. It’s brutal when you decide to skip Sparks but I’ll have another shot to see them this year. I figure this way I can see all of Low. Friday overlap of SoK and Kim Gordon is my heartbreaker.

Going through day by day slowly and trying to give each artist a decent listen before deciding (also this isn't finalized until I check in with my brother). Only have Thursday so far but will work through the rest over the coming days
So Percussion > Patti Smith (Words & Music) > Trefoil > Bill Callahan > Sparks > mssv

You will have no trouble getting in with these imo. Patti, Callahan, and maybe mssv will be tight but you’ll be fine.

kept trying to find feasible ways to diversify my venues for the day but Mill and Mine brought the goods

It sucks that the Mill and Mine and the Bijou are such a distance apart. For the weekend, everyone should try to see something at the Bijou and Tennessee. The Bijou is one of my top theater venues anywhere. The Tennessee is so ornate though that it's something to behold.

Agreed with this. Bijou is just so cozy and intimate. I’m bummed Annette is overlapping Efterklang there. That show would be a highlight of the weekend for anyone that goes.
I’m also really curious to how the outdoor amphitheater will be. I’ll be there the majority of Friday night and I’m gonna pack my electric socks because I’m fucking old.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think it's going to have to be "Fennesz -> MSSV" for me. I have NEVER seen either before (and am unlikely to have the chance again). As much as I love Sparks (note my inforoo avatar), I'll have seen them 3 times in the last 10 years by the time this event starts. And Low, who are brilliant, is a band I've seen a lot...
Luckily they always switch up the schedule a few times before the show. I hope that block gets shuffled.

I’m gonna miss seeing Sparks, too. I’ve seen them twice but that second show was so special, I’m not sure how anyone can top that. Plus I have another shot later in the year.
If anyone is on the fence seeing them, I fully endorse it. They’re just magical.

Personally, I’d switch up the Krew and Annette and add Jamie Branch in. You’d have 15 minutes in between Sumney and her and still catch all of AP and still have some NOLA time.
Krew will be a party and going from that to Peacock might be a bit jarring imo.

Excellent suggestion. Will flip up my end of Saturday to Sumney > Jamie Branch > AP > end of KdK
Sunday: Alabaster DePlume > either Shauf or Miguel Zenon with Spektral > Bonny Light Horseman > Sudan Archives > Zorn New Masada > Yves Tumor

I'm going to try doing something different this year: I'm not going to pencil in a schedule until a week before the event. In years past, I'd get excited about certain blocks of times, make peace with others that I had to let go... and *BAM* the schedule gets re-organized. I'm just going to focus on my "must see" list and hope I get to see half of 'em
Angélica Negrón Annette Peacock Attacca Quartet Balún Bill Callahan Circuit Des Yeus Claire Rousay Craig Taborn Ellen Reid Soundwalk Ensemble Ensemble Dal Niente Fennesz Harriet Tubman John Zorn Kim Gordon Kris Davis' Diatom Ribbons Kronos Quartet L'rain Lisel Low Moses Sumney MSSV (Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges, Mike Watt) Nathalie Joachim Preservation Hall Jazz Band Sarah Davachi Sparks Tristan Perich
First thought is Tomato Head since it’s in the area unless Dave Maynar or marcoolio has better suggestions.
I’m doing early shows Friday-Sunday and thinking I may do the nature walkthrough on Sunday morning. I can make something work though.
I'm game for any day. How many people are yall thinking? I am a huge fan of brunch at bistro by the bijou personally, but obviously theres like 10 good brunch places in a 1 mile radius. Are you doing the soundwalk thing? I checked it out once. Story to follow but marking it in spoilers.
So I match with this gal from tinder and she seems cool or whatever. We decide to meet up that friday and she wants to go check out the nature walk/music thing set up for Big Ears. Sick, whatever, sounds good.
So later we make concrete plans and she says she wants to go at like 7pm (this is at some point in mid october). I say the park closes at dusk so idk if the gate will be down, she says it is staying open late for a movie.
"Would you be up for grabbing food or something beforehand?" "No I just wanna do the nature walk."
Weighing my options I was like well fuck it, she wants to go hiking at night I guess Im down. So I show up to the park and meet up with her, seems to be going okay. We start up the app that plays the music and start walking around (as it rapidly gets dark).
As its getting darker and darker the music picks up and I swear it sounded like the damn soundtrack to silence of the lambs. Eerie sharp strings, uncomfortable rhythm/percussion, straight up sinister. My date makes a few nervous jokes about how we might get murdered/find a body. We press on. Shortly after we hear screaming. She jumps and I ask what the fuck that is. She tells me the movie the park stayed open for is "the shining" so we decide to go to the quarry side of the park where hopefully we cant hear any screams.
At this point she pulls out a giant maglite with a literal baseball bat handle and tells me her dad got it for her to protect herself. I begin to keep my distance in a much more measured/intentional fashion for fear of getting brained by this chick and tossed in the quarry.
We reach the bottom of the quarry and her flashlight starts to flicker. The music reaches an erich zann-like fever pitch. We decide its a pretty good time to head back to the car and her light dies. She immediately starts hyperventilating. I turn my phone flashlight on and keep my distance so I dont get a hole in my skull. We eventually make our way back and I suggest perhaps we dont listen to the music anymore since she is freaking the fuck out.
Go our separate ways after we go to get drinks, she orders a vodka soda and drinks it in one extended gulp like a shot and just stands there. "Uh did you want anything else" "No I'm good" Weird tinder date cycle continues.

LMFAO I’m dead. You know things are going well when they are brandishing a potential weapon.
Plan is to do it Sunday morning but I haven’t done any research to see when the park is open. If anyone doesn’t wanna go alone, reach out. I’d love to have a walking buddy or seven.

Just looking at the schedule and what I'm prioritizing in the early going each day I think Sunday would make the most sense for brunch or some sort of meetup on our end. Could make almost anything work though! Definitely hoping to do the nature walk at some point as well, and may try to find an excursion or two before the festival each day if anyone has good recs for downtown (stuff like museums, etc. that might be open in the mornings)
