I’m home and exhausted and ready to nap.
Two thoughts before that: - Great weekend. The shows, the people, the food: IT WAS PERFECT. - So happy to see old faces and meet new ones. You guys rule.
Wonderful festival. Met some brilliant kind people that I hope to keep in touch with. Overall I was really impressed with the sound quality at all the venues. after going to Le guess who? The venue based fest was really appealing, however I'm not sure I'll be returning next year. with all the really heady, technical music having some braindead dance, pop or heavy metal would have been appreciated to break things up. I might have been just going to the wrong shows though. Thom Nguyen/che Chen/tashi dorji at the pilot light tops the 28 shows I saw over the weekend. Favorite shows for y'all?
5) James McVinnie & Tristan Perich 4) Fennesz 3) John Zorn (solo piece) & the trio from Heaven & Earth Magick performing "Naked Lunch" 2) Moses Sumney 1) New Masada Quartet
Annette Peacock doesn't really fit in a linear ranking; she was operating in a completely different plane of existence. Really glad I saw her perform.
I really didn't take a lot of pictures this year (this being my 6th Big Ears attendance), and it felt good to keep my phone in my pocket I did, however, take one of Moses Sumney that I'm pretty happy with:
Sorry that I didn't see any of you there. Figured I'd run into garageland at some point! Can't wait for next year!

Fully on board with this.
Moses Sumney was set of the weekend for me with Sons of Kemet as a close #2. Also really enjoyed Bill Callahan, Arooj Aftab, Jeff Parker, Yasmin Williams, the Hanif Abdurraqib reading, Evan Ziporyn, and the Zorn Electric Masada to close things out

Is it too early to start speculating for next year's lineup? Who would you most want to see that they could at least somewhat realistically book?
Had this conversation with some people in line before the last Zorn Masada set, and the best suggestions I heard were Bjork and Pharoah Sanders/Floating Points touring the Promises record. If they keep looking for more mainstream names up top, I also think Bon Iver would be a pretty good fit

I don't believe in realism
David Sylvian, Hugo Largo (it's time for a reunion!), Squarepusher, Magma, Ron Geesin, Tindersticks, The Dead Texan, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Negativland, His Name is Alive, Cranes, Boards of Canada, Stars of the Lid, Mountains, The Sight Below, Deaf Center, and John Cale.

I was thinking about this on the ride home and came up with a few names:
- Pharoah Sanders - Michael Rother/Hallogallo preforming NEU! for its 50th anniversary - The Raincoats - Midori Takada - Mount Eerie/Microphones/Phil in any and all combinations - Lucricia Dalt - Eartheater - Aldous Harding - The Bug - Backxwash - LEYA - Lafawnda - Smerz - Silvana Estrada - KeiyaA - Kelly Moran - Cindy Lee - The Hellp

Moses Sumney and Zorn New Masada Quartet were my top two of the weekend. Patti Smith Electric, Low, Sarah Davachi, and Mdou Moctar were way up there too but I didn't see a single dud. What a great weekend--my first time since 2017, but it'll be hard to stay away next year. I'm walking away full of ideas about my own music and making events happen here in Cincinnati. It was also a pretty important college reunion weekend for my group, we hadn't all been together at a show since July 2018. It was good to meet garageland (thanks for helping my friend out!) and would love to connect with more of you in the future.

I spent most of my time in Old City (with a few notable exceptions). It was nice to not have to go too far and my knees thanked me for that.
Stoked you had a blast though. Next year, for sure.
paintedhighway, it was a gift to me from the amazing Яastaputin. Glad it helped. Those things need good homes. We’ll hang out for real next year.

Everyone says they like music, I believe them. Most people don't love music like I do. I know how pretentious that sounds, but I believe it to be true. The people that attend this fest love music like I do. I'm kicking myself for never having made it to this before as I'm just over the mountain in Asheville, but I think I have to go to this for the rest of my life.
Favorites: Sons of Kemet, Zorn Simulcranum, Patty electric, Fly or Die, Moses Sumney, Sparks, Nubya Garcia, Knoxville Symphony with Shabaka
Did not care for: Kim Gordon (just wasn't very good), Meredith Monk w/ Bang on a Can (I felt like I was stuck in an episode of Portlandia, I'm sure some others loved it though, good for them).
Future requests: Samuel Kerridge, Andy Stott, Angelo Badalamenti, one or more Glen Branca symphonies, Dirty Three, A Silver Mount Zion, Einsturzende Neubauten, anbb, Penguin Cafe

I liked the Patti Words and Music thing well enough for what it was, but do kind of regret not going to the Friday show instead (or in addition to). Would have loved to have heard Gloria

I feel pretty lame because I feel like I was camped out at the Mill and Mine for a lot of the fest. Some solid runs at that particular venue. Faves were Sons of Kemet, Low, Nubya Garcia, Jeff Parker and the New Breed, Mdou Moctar, Fennesz and Annette Peacock.
I regret missing Moses Sumney, Angel Bat Dawid, Circuit Des Yeux and RAM the most. Sarah Davachi was my pop in set that blew me away, the church venues always end up delivering. Overall it was incredible and I'm happy to see the festival through after having tickets for the '20 iteration. The scale of it is impressive and overall it was very tightly run. Excited to see what becomes of the Bowery and NV, hopefully future venue sites. Knoxville has come a long way and the weather was absolutely sublime.
I would definitely like to see the festival get back to incorporating more electronic music along with some hip hop. I thought the pop bookings were quite good this year.
ugh, I wish there were a missed connections thread for this year's fest. Lost contact info for my potential soulmate at Yves Tumor for reasons unknown. Blarg....

Back on Inforoo for the first time in 3 years just to say that this was a phenomenal Big Ears. And, more importantly, that New Electric Masada was quite seriously the best concert I have ever seen.

He’s not joking about this either. “Transcend” is not a term he uses easily.

I think my moby dick for big ears would be a retry at whale watching tour w/ bedroom community. Honestly I'd give a lung to see even a nico muhly/sam amidon/ben frost/valgeir sigurðsson combo of any/all.

How did it compare to the New Masada Quartet? I contemplated coming back, but was so satiated by that set, I decided to head back to my hotel...

I'd put it a little higher. If the Quartet hit the roof, Electric blew it off.
I could see some preferring the Quartet. Being stripped down allowed for a little more nuance in the interplay. Occasionally Electric could just come off as a nine-way noise blast. But, for me, more was more: more top-notch musicians, more possibilities, more energy and thrill.

All of the Zorn sets were great. We saw the final New Electric set which was just insane. Didn't get there in time for Simulacrum, but also saw this one Saturday afternoon with the piano player just going off
