WHAT'S NEXT FOR BIG EARS?
In March 2019, as the triumphant sounds of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's riveting festival finale still echoed in our ears, it was unimaginable that three years would pass before Big Ears would return.
We have tried to use the time wisely. Thanks to the generous support of many, we have used this time to strengthen our organization, explore new ideas, imagine the future, and create the most mind-blowing festival we could imagine for our return.
We are ready.
On Tuesday, September 14, we will unveil the program for Big Ears 2022. Spanning March 24 – 27, the breadth and depth of performances and the essential footprint of the festival will be familiar, even as it pushes in new directions: over 100 concerts in Knoxville’s historic theaters, churches, repurposed industrial spaces, clubs, museums, and galleries—featuring the most imaginative innovators and visionaries making music today.
Festival passes will go on sale at 12 noon ET on Thursday, Sept. 16.
There will, however, be two special pre-sales: Big Ears donors—whose support has sustained us through these challenging times—will have exclusive access to purchase passes in the 24 hours following the announcement. The following day, access to the pre-sale will be offered to previous pass holders at all levels from the 2019 and 2020 festivals. Shortly before the September 14 announcement, you will receive an email with details for participating in the pre-sale.
We have surprises in store for 2022 as well—artist residencies and community collaborations, free pop-up concerts, films, talks, exhibitions, and exhilarating collaborations to mark the occasion.
In this ever-changing health landscape, safety is our number one concern—for our patrons, for the artists and their teams, for ourselves and our staff, and for our community. While March is still seven months away, we are committed to implementing policies that meet or exceed CDC guidelines and other standards to ensure the safest festival environment possible.
We’re looking forward to seeing you in March. It’s time!
Seriously hoping to see both Damon Locks + Black Movement Ensemble and Nubya Garcia on there.
I’m starting the saving up now and with the help of some sold Phish tickets, I’ll have enough for Premier passes. With a little saving, I might be able to swing Sonic Explorer (If those exist after roll overs).
Here are all the teases since the last update (I think):
Modu Moctar John Zorn Bill Callahan + Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy Nubya Garcia Dawn Ash Fure Damon Locks + Black Movement Ensemble Julian Lage L’Rain Mary Lattimore Myra Melford Thao Nguyen + San Fermin Lakou Mizik Marc Ribot Aurora Nealand - Residency Ellen Ried - Soundscape Georgia Anne Muldrow. Bonnie Light Horseman Christian Scott aTunde Dafnis Prieto Carlos Rafael Rivera Animal Collective Mind Maintenance Kim Gordon Cassandra Jenkins Sons of Kemet Sparks Kris Davis Arooj Aftab Yves Tumor Attacca Quarter Ambrose Akinmusire Caroline Shaw Petra Hayden Moses Sumney Theon Cross Lido Pimienta Low Saul Willams Harriet Tubman Amythyst Kiah Annette Peacock Balún
Obviously Sparks is confirmed and those Sons of Kemet and Low dates make it look plausible. I was gonna put these in genres but I ran out of time today.
Yo esteban and/or Vieux this mean anything to you? It’s interesting af. It’s not the best but I’m definitely curious about it, for sure.
I know what’s coming, too. Please stay safe.
Yeah so I think maybe those are the guys that accompanied Pretty Lights when they let him do that parade through their neighborhoods. Usually with the Indians, there’s a lot of chanting and words I don’t know what they all mean - set to some brass and hypnotic African rhythms. Wild Magnolias are probably one of the bigger music acts and big chief monk Boudreaux but I think he died. We good in Florida but the city is taking a bit of a hit. Luckily it doesn’t look too extreme.

Y'know... beggars can't be choosers. So I'm just hoping that Big Ears 2022 happens... PERIOD. But I have to say, that once we're not in survival mode, I hope we revisit the film portion of this festival. The 3D material in 2018 was AMAZING. And this is coming from an attendee that stated, "If I have to choose between a film and a live show, I'm going to pick the live show." 2018 made me reconsider that position wholesale. I hope we get back to a point where the film offerings hit that level. In the meantime, I'm totally OK with seeing Sparks and a few other favorites

SupeЯfuЯЯyanimal, this is probably a good idea of a significant portion of the lineup.
I was waiting for the tease and they let everyone know that Ellen Ried is happening starting today. I’m expecting full reports next week Dave Maynar marcoolio
Just gonna sit on that 75 Dollar Bill post from a few days ago and be happy.
Fun Fact: Mrs GL says the dude at 2:30 in apparently dances like I do. Arms folded and bobbing. She also says “ this is horrible” so take that for what you will.

Damn I'll have to hit this up! Thanks for the ping actually, that flew below my radar.
Alright, Big Ears. Hopscotch is over and I need to feel the heat.
Plans didn't work out this weekend, but alawre and I are going to ijams soon (maybe Friday if weather isn't bullshit). We'll report back. She's already got the app ready and everything.

With so much going on, I totally understand. I’m excited to try and fit that in to my trip this spring though.
I tried to make a few bands that BE teased that were playing Hopscotch and failed miserably. Wednesday (the band not the day) started late and I missed Lido Pimienta because of that. I skipped Animal Collective outright. I found out after the fact Jeff Parker was playing with Makaya McCraven which pissed me off to no end. Colin Stetson cancelled due to a family emergency.
I ended with nada. Gonna have to try and knock out conflicts closer to the festival, I guess.
